One pocket simply separates the men from the boys.

I had some APA eight ball guy ask me if I wanted to join their
league last night, and I told him as long as it was a one pocket league
I would, anything else would have no interest from me what so ever.

He looked at me like I was from another planet.
Are there one pocket leagues?

I dont like One Pocket at all.. its so boring for me...

Am I alone? :)

Respectfully, I suggest you get a copy of Alex Pagulayan's games at the Derby last year and then decide. I agree that to watch lower level players play this game is painful but played by those that know how to play it it is an art.

lol, you have said so many dumb things in this one post it's not even worth the effort to splain' it to you -- you have gone beyond clueless.

Lou Figueroa
You are so right Lou but be easy on him. I'm sure he's young and has a lot to learn.

I pretty much suck at 1P............wanting to learn, though.
Question for SJD:
If you don't have a shot at your hole, what are the top 3 things you're thinking next? ---> if #1 is not available, then what is #2, etc. Thx.

Allow me, Dick.
1. Take a quick look around the place to see were the exits are. Us One Pocket players call this exit strategy.
2. Have your wife, and or your girlfriend, drop her purse in front of your opponent then bend over to pick up her stuff. Us One Pocket players call this a diversionary tactic.
3. Use a prearranged signal with the manager to come over and tell your opponent his mother has just had a stroke and has been taken to the hospital. Us One Pocket players call this an out and out lie. When he goes off to make a phone call implement the exit strategy.

Tramp,...Those all sound like very good options to me !..:embarrassed2: ..Let me offer a 4th option !..Have your buddy (the manager) tell him both his mother and his wife, have been killed in a car accident....Then, as he bolts out of the joint, inform him he has just forfeited the cash ! :)

PS..Thats why all us one pocket player's, are light years ahead of 9/10 ball player's, in the 'brain' department !

You are correct, Sir. The distance between us One Pocket players, and 9&10 ballers, is from here to Uranus. :)

Seriously DTL, I did not mean to make light of your sensible question ! (like Trampsteamer did.)..There are many things to look at when you are in a dead trap, depending on what your options are !..Most beginners tend to overlook them !..Always look for a way to 'lag safe'..if none are available, try moving the cue ball a little, to try and create a way out for you to do that ! Its always better to give up a ball, or even two, then it is to just give uo !

If you are up against a smart opponent, and are playing 3 fouls you lose..this may not be a workable option !...You may have to go for the "blast, and pray" option, and if you don't get lucky..just pay off and start another game !...After all, its only money..It ain't like you lost your loved one's in a car wreck ! :o

League players will come and go. Decimated by alcoholism and high divorce rates.
Rotation players will grow up and become insurance salesmen.
Eight-ball players will matriculate to nine-ball, then on to ten, never really knowing the difference.
Straight pool players will have issues that they can never resolve.
But, One Pocket players will play on forever, knowing that their path is the true way to peace and contentment.
May the light of One Pocket shine upon you, my friend.

As others have said, one pocket is not for beginners. Until you reach a certain level of skill and general pool aptitude, the game really doesn't even make sense. For that matter, neither does 9-ball, but the APA addressed that by making it a points race so players that can't run a rack can just be happy to make a ball. One pocket doesn't really have a similar "beginner mode". Sure, it's easy to handicap against a good player, but it doesn't really feel like winning when you only have to make a couple balls and are just hoping for a lucky shot or a major mistake from your opponent. Player with another weak player isn't any better, because neither player will know what they are doing.

In my case, it wasn't until I became friends with a die-hard one pocket enthusiast named Andy Bruce that I really got into the game. By that time, I was already a decent B player and had maxed out the APA skill levels, so I was getting bored with 8-ball and 9-ball and ready for something new. Sure, there was room for improvement in those games, but most of that improvement would require lots of practice time I don't have to become more consistent. I already played some straight pool, and as much as I love straight pool for practicing, competing at it feels more like 2 people doing the same drill than playing against each other most of the time. One pocket was just what I needed: A game that I had enough skill to play well, but not enough experience to play smartly. It was an opportunity for me to enjoy getting better without hours of boring practice drills. Once I got a feel for the game, watching it went from boring to exciting as I thought about what I would do in every situation, and now I have a hard time watching any pool that isn't one pocket.

My advice to anyone that doesn't like one pocket is not to write the game off completely. When you get bored with other games, give it another try. IMO, outplaying someone in one pocket is way more gratifying than running out a rack of 8-ball or 9-ball and the constant interaction with your opponent makes it feel more like you're playing against a person than the table.
