Darren Forfeits Beloit

This is regarding the big money $2,000 entry, 16 man 8 ball event being held in Beloit, WI this weekend at Dave Cole's Carom Room.

Darren had eliminated Jesse Bowman 15-14 last night to guarantee himself 4th place. He was scheduled to play Sky Woodward on the loser's side for 3rd place this morning at 10:00am. Darren failed to show for his match and at the conclusion of the SVB/Corey match, it was announced on the stream that Darren had forfeited with no further explanation given. The following post by Lee Brett (in another thread) summarizes what happened.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Sky won on a forfeit, Darren overslept and Sky's backers asked for him to be forfeited."
- Lee Brett
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It turns out that there were several attempts made -by the Carom Room staff- to find, wake, and notify Darren prior to his match this morning. And finally, only after stumbling across an old text that contained the name of a nearby hotel, were they able to contact the hotel and reach Darren - asleep in his room. It was 10:20am - 20 minutes after the match was supposed to begin.

Unfortunately, the people who were financially invested in Sky felt that a forfeit was the only correct call.

All I can say is Wow!

Before I proceed, I would like to make it very clear that my interest in this spectacle is not merely as a spectator or fan. I (along with another individual) had purchased Darren in the Calcutta for $4,900.

Funny as it sounds, one of the principle reasons why we chose to buy Darren (beyond his eight ball expertise, and superb pool playing skills) was the degree of professionalism Darren has always exhibited on and around a pool table. Every time I've watched Darren play (Mosconi Cup, US Open, Chinese 8 Ball, etc...) I've been very impressed with the way he has carried himself. Furthermore, when I've listened to him on American Billiards Radio, I've been equally impressed with his insights and intelligence. In Short, Darren had always personified the best of pool, and represented everything that this sport can and should aspire towards.

So when thrown into a tournament filled with absolute killers (Shane, Dennis, Corey, Sky, Justin, Kiamco, Morra, etc...) I felt lucky to place the winning bid on Darren. Why? because I felt that it would take much more than just pool skills alone to win this tournament. It would take will, drive, and most of all character to best this field. All traits that I thought Darren carried in spades.

So to find out that oversleeping was what kept Darren from playing his match this morning -a match that still carried with it the possibility of winning a 16,000 first prize- I am bewildered and disappointed.

Let me be very clear, am I upset about being out $2,450? (my half of the calcutta - No, Darren did not buy half of himself), of course I am. But, I'll be ok.

However, I will seriously reconsider what involvment -if any- I ever have again with pro pool as either a backer, spectator, or stream viewer.

Will I ever participate in another calcutta again? NEVER - FU**ING - EVER! Fool me once... To put it bluntly, I think it will be a long time before I put any of my money back into the pro pool economy.

Wow! I'm at a loss for words. I guess if he or his backer doesn't want half of the Calcutta it has to make you wonder....

It kinda ticks me off that lee brett and others keep talking about "Sky's backers." This was a tournament and the tournament directors decide these things. Sky and anyone else can make a case, but in the end they have no say in the matter, and if they did, it was wrong.

It's an attempt to make an accusation of corruption or influence when the real fault is obvious.

That sucks. It seems like Darren is owning it on facebook and taking responsibility. That doesnt help you with your calcutta though. Bad situation all the way around.

I don't blame Sky's backers one bit for pushing for the forfeit or TD for doing it. Their guy was on time and ready to go. I don't blame the OP for being super pissed either. I would be in orbit.

Since he made the money will you get any of your calcutta money back?

Not really. At these big calcutta events its easy for it to cost thousands of dollars for a player to buy half or even a part of himself. If a guy puts himself in for $2000 and spends a dime on travel coming up with another $2K for the calcutta makes it a pretty brutal deal.

I'll be very clear; neither Sky, his backers, Daves Coles, nor the tournament staff did anything wrong. Their hands were tied. Any other decision than one to forfeit Darren would haven called into question the integrity of the entire tournament. They are not to blame.

Calcutta only paid top three places. The forfeited match against Sky would have gotten him into the Calcutta money.

I'm sure like most Turneys the have a time limit for forfeit ,, the cause is irrelevant if you miss your tee time in any pro golf event your done toast ,,
Sleeping in is inexcusable and not only should you forfeit you should be penalized and it's truly disgraceful another black eye for pool

This is the most reasonable statement I've heard on this subject and it's from someone who was financially invested in Darren. You sir are a class act, sorry about the bad beat.

He just make 100K overseas, if it was me, I'd gladly payback those that lost from my mistake, we all make em. Like Souquet, I doubt he'll make the same mistake twice. It's why I ALWAYS carried my separate alarm clock, battery operated, JIC of an electrical outage or a brain fart by the hotel wake up service. It's just COMMON SENSE.

People oversleep, it happens as it is a part of life sometimes. To say it is a "black eye for pool" is just being overly dramatic for no good reason.

This is why a certain % of the entry fee should have to be put up by the player. How you could know where the players money came from, I don't know. I like Darren, but this is on him. If he was partying last night when knowing he had an early match today, and backers put him in and a big calcuta was bought on him and he had NO money on himself, then this sucks. I really thought these high entry tournaments with big calcutas would help to bring pro pool back, but no, pros shot foot again. Johnnyt

Yes, but rarely do they play until midnight or later and then have to be up and ready by 10am the next day. Not to say it's an excuse, but the world of tournament pool is a little different then most other sports in that way. Rory Mcilroy almost missed his tee time once at the Ryder Cup, it happens. And I can see why it happens more in pool then other sports because of the scheduling.

Still, it shouldn't happen and it's awful for the OP who had him in the Calcutta. I can't beleive nobody could reach him, if I was a player I'd want plenty of people to know where I was and how to get ahold of me and if I wasn't there an hour before start, then I'd want to have friends/staff ready to come find me or making calls.

I'll stick to $50-100 calcuttas...sickening. What time was the match? How does someone oversleep with today's technology that is available to make sure this doesn't happen (alarm clock, phone clock, hotel phone call wakup service, friend knocking on the door even etc). If i am playing in a big tournament shit I am probably not sleeping almost at all, especially that close to in the calcutta money. I like watching Darren play and have respect for his game...just a shitty situation. Sorry man to hear about it.
