Genuine Concern Over AzB

Tramp I have ignored FB for many years but I have been recently visiting it more. I will never stop AZ but there are many friends and family wanting me to visit over there.

I don't doubt it, my friend, but to me it's way too crowded. I'd be lost, in more ways than one.
This place is more like a safe haven, where an aging One Pocket player can tell cheesy jokes and get away with it. I'm comfortable with that. :)

This is interesting. I go months without coming into main because of the garbage. But then I come back and find some decent info and enjoy it again.

The main problem, imo, is people don't respect others opinions, and, are arrogant. I Read something in the Drills thread they said something like "when you're not better in 10 years you'll know why." (Or something of the like). That statement is somewhat inflammatory and is likely to garner a return inflammoatory statement and so on and so on. It's arrogant to assume that our opinion is correct and disrespectful to others to present it as fact.

Let's have our opinion, share it so we can all learn from one another, and leave the idea that "my way" is the ONLY right way. It can be right for you, doesn't make it right for everyone though.

I don't care if a person has 100 years of doing it their way and it worked so it's now fact. I'll bet my bottom dollar that someone, somewhere, has done it completely different and it also worked. The amount of arrogance in some posts is staggering. Hell, this post notwithstanding.

WOW! I think you take things a little too personal. I am the one that made that post. I also stated that is was originally posted quite a while ago. That being true, why would you take it personal today?

Not to mention that the statement was for those that aren't getting better, which was clearly stated. Not for everyone. So, your feelings of arrogance in the post was because you misread it.

The general pool playing populace reaches a plateau at a lower level of play. That is because they don't do the things necessary to actually improve. Which is doing drills to find out what you need to work on, and then working on those issues.

Why you would find a general statement arrogant is beyond me. ????

Some just don't get what you're talking about & sadly it seems that they never will. That just seems to be the nature of arrogant condescending individuals. They are also stricken with the affliction of blinding hypocrisy. That is one of the problems that plagues AZB in general. It's difficult to be sociable with such individuals & many of them relish the 'opportunity' to show off their arrogance even if they do not see it as arrogance. The arrogant individual will almost always certainly blame everyone but themselves for any issues that they themselves have caused or instigated.

Hence discussions get shut down & taken off into personal 'assaults' directed at anyone that points out the flaws & faults of an arrogant individual. To me there is a huge difference between confidence & arrogance. One does not have to be arrogant & condescending & have a holier than thou attitude in order to be confident. IMO arrogance & condescension is where a truly weak individual hides. It's sort of a Napoleonic complex thing. They have to envision themselves as superior in some manner in order to compensate for their obvious weakness in some aspect of life.

Since these individuals are basically lying to themselves about themselves, the truth is not really that important to them in many regards. Hence there is a whole host of issues that can come to the forefront & stifle healthful interaction. When that happens things mostly turn bad. Then it happens again, & again, & again. That kind of stuff is not conducive for the growth & well being of a discussion forum.

Naturally all of the above are just my opinions.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

I don't think you read what I wrote (cause I actually agree with your premise) but here is what you said verbatum... "To those that think drills are a waste of time- good luck with that. Don't be surprised when in 10 years you find out you aren't much better than you are now."

Now, maybe I am taking what you say personal but the bold above is, again, you stating your opinion as fact (although I personally agree) but others may not and could turn into a pissing match. This isn't about you or me though, it's a generality that posts similar to yours essentially turn a perfectly civil conversation into a name calling back and forth that turns ugly and gets someone banned.

May I ask what is wrong with saying: "I believe that most people who don't do drills will likely find that in 5-10 years they haven't really improved much."? Read my post (1st response in drill thread) and you can see a respectable way to voice an opinion without stating it as fact. Because I believe that this: "To those that think drills are a waste of time- good luck with that. Don't be surprised when in 10 years you find out you aren't much better than you are now." is a very arrogant statement to make. It's condescending as well.

I am NOT calling you arrogant and hopefully this won't turn into a flame situation. We all have something that we believe strongly in and sometimes our language comes across stronger than we intended.

For the record, nothing anyone says to me on the internet can offend me. But, others aren't the same. Your post absolutely did not offend me but I've been around long enough to know that it absolutely can rub some people the wrong way.

Good day to you.

Jojopiff makes a good point to keep in mind - the way something is said can dramatically affect the way it comes across and is taken. This thread is full of people pointing out how much of a turn-off the constant conflicts and clashes are, and many posters have noted the same or similar things in other posts. Many of the more prolific posters are very guilty in this regard. Perhaps people will take this into consideration and try to make the atmosphere more civil so that increasing numbers of people will flock to the site.

I agree & the text only format many times can be a problem with no voice inflection nor tone & no facial expressions to read.

The thing is that it takes two to tango, so to speak.

If one tries to do as you suggest & other individuals keep making the same negative arrogant condescending statements, there is not much room for improvement.

Maybe Mike & Jerry will take this thread to heart & try to suggestively guide the members to a more civil & less condescending tone without the ban hammer coming down on individuals that have been pushed into making mistakes buy others.

Anyway, I think most of us would like it to get better.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

This is very true, as is the two to tango.

Perhaps people will think back to what their mother said - speak to others as you would have them speak to you, or something like that. :D

No pissing match wanted here either. But, you did take it out of context with the rest of the post, and just centered in on one statement. Even at that, I find it odd that you or anyone else reads that as condescending or arrogant. To almost any statement, there are exceptions. No need to rule those out.

That's kind of funny as I just a short while ago asked a member that when he responded to a post of mine to sort of take it easy on me in a manner like when he first realized that his mother was just trying to help him.

Hello all!

I have a few ideas as to what may be going on here. Same as every pool hall and or bar ( geared towards pool ) that I had been going to for many years since I was a kid - the weather breaks and people quickly disappear. Tourneys normally stop in May - June and dont return till Sep - Oct. Its nice out and while most of us on here love pool, we do have other things going on and some of those things are limited to good weather months.

Me personally I haven't been on AZ much as of recent. Reason : just bought a boat couple weeks ago. As all of our AZ boaters already know; owning a boat requires a never ending plethora of chores. Add fishing to that, and all the other fun activities associates with being on the water it takes up a HUGE amount of time.

And its not just boating, lots of folks enjoy doing lots of things when the weather breaks such as golf, frisbt golf, and on and on and on. I would like to believe AZ will pick back up post summer; time will tell and we shall see I suppose.

Facebook? FACEBOOK? Slowly I turned. Step by step. Inch by inch.

I don't want anything to do with Facebook. No way, no how. This place is bad enough, but that's sheeple land over there. Selfieville.
It's hard enough trying to make a living over here. I wouldn't last a day over there.

LOL.
I let em know members are pining away for him over here. :)

Leave it you you Neil. Called out by accident on ancient history. LOL

Ditto on Interest

Personally I haven't even played pool for months. I used to be on AZB for hours every day but this is the first time I have even looked at the site in over a month. Now that its nice outside I have been fishing a ton and enjoying the outdoors and pool hasn't even crossed my mind lately. Also I started to find that AZB is very repetitive in its forum. A lot of the same questions are asked everyday and not a lot of interesting subject matter. I do love the site and it has done a lot of things for me but lately it just hasn't been holding my interest.

I agree on interest. I think there is a point when nothing new is being discussed, argued about etc that things get ho hum. You really almost have to start some sort of fight to get people talking about anything interesting. Like you said its spring, time to be outside.

Rick

I have mentioned this many times.
Think prior to hitting enter.

However this does not always work as not everybody is at the same level linguistically. If an individuals communication skills are poor. The thoughts that are attempted to be brought across may not be communicated or interpreted properly.

Of course then you do those individuals that are perpetually offended no matter how lucid the thoughts that typed our are presented.

Then there is the person that is deliberately pushing buttons.

Which of course all of the above generally culminates in lots of entertainment and various heated discussions.

If everybody were perfectly civil and each comment were accurately interpreted. The forums would quite informative text book style and also quite boring.
We might as will all gather for tea at high noon with fine china and crumpets and respond with "quite" every time somebody posts a response to a question.

Will that be one lump or two?

less fighting and less battle threads!!!

Plus, all the topics have been beat to death!!!

Not much, left to say!!!

KD

I have little or no desire to post let alone start a thread. I guess I am just too thin skinned. Seems the fun and respect has declined. :(

Hi Sev,

Accidents are not the problem. They are usually rather quickly resolved.

It's the intentional ill will &/or arrogant condescension that is spewed out by some on a continual basis that is the problem.

The few like that that are 'prolific' have set a bad tone & stifled the good old average joe or jane from participating.

Best 2 You & Yours,
Rick

PS Can you PM me with the best ways to get Tumeric into one's diet?

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

What the hell is with tumeric recently? My wife is all about that stuff. She's putting it in teas, using it to pan sear tuna and god knows what else. OK, that tuna was damn good, I'll give her that. Maybe its the reason I've not been able to practice recently bit still stay in stroke...

Turmeric as well as several other herbs are proven to reduce inflammation in the body.
Inflammation is directly linked to many chronic illnesses.
Anti-inflammatory's are very good in helping with arthritic pain.
As a side note
India also has the lowest incidence Alzheimer's. It is thought that use of turmeric and thus lower inflammation in the body may be linked.

She may also want to look into ginger, Boswellin, cinnamon, garlic, cayenne, cats claw, nutmeg, holy basil, Shiitake mushrooms, cloves, rosemary, willow bark and sage. Omega-3 and 6 are another group anti inflammatorys.

Also let her know that turmeric is difficult to absorb. It should always be taken with black pepper for better absorption. If she is buying supplements she needs to look for black pepper or piperine to be on the list of ingredients.

I think it is the new arugula!

This thread about the death of azb has brought out a lot of good comments. I'm Amazed it didn't devolve into the typical dead horse beating argument thread. Hope for us yet
