an honest review of the hustlers

Exactly! The show is targeted for mainstream America, who know nothing about defense, safeties, and position play. Years ago, our sport switched to 9-ball, because spectacular shots look good on TV.

FWIW, in the background in episode 1 sits Jerry Tarantola, who has produced many streams with Inside Pool, and now with Upstate Al. Jennifer and Mike Dechaine are pros and probably consulted on the show. I wouldn't be surprised if the producers overrode their advice. As some pointed out, it could be scripted.

Enjoy it for entertainment value, and try not to over analyze it.

For pool aficionados, The Hustlers isn't going to cut the mustard, so to speak, but we pool aficionados are such a small segment of mainstream America, it doesn't matter. The producers are shooting for -- pun intended -- mainstream America, those who know little to nothing about pool.

*cut for brevity*

Does this TV show have a "real" pool player as a consultant? Surely Steinway with all its pool stars, tournaments, and everyday happenings has someone who can advise the technical crew to make this show more believable.

It was entertaining and better than I expected. Best of all, after the show ended. My 12 year old wanted to play some pool. He normally just wants me to go. So he can play video games on the TV.

Most important comment in the thread IMO.

I enjoyed it for what it was. Will keep watching.

Second

I watched it all twice. The first time I did not like it the second time I watched it I liked it. If you want to watch really serious Pool then watch a Major Tournament but the majority of TV watchers would get bored with that, this offers a lot more entertainment which should draw a larger viewing audience.I spoke with a friend of mine this morning who has no interest in Pool she watched it with her husband and they loved it.That is the Market that the program and Pool need.

i'm glad to see most of the people around here are taking a very "take it for what it is" attitude towards the show.
hey...if it'll get more people in a pool room thinking they can beat a strong player by just slamming balls around the table like "finnigan" did against mike and jarrod i'm all for it. haha. i know i'm not the only one that thought about that and the possible $$

I cant believe how many people are searching for things like "the list" to bash. Pool is on TV and all you guys want to do is critique the shots and brag about how you know the list is fake.

Un-friggin-believable.

Except it's not pool, it's poorly written "drama" with pool as the backdrop.

I like the show I play a lot and hang around a few rooms here in AL i thought the show was ok hope it gets good numbers and gets another season pool needs a lot of help maybe the public will get interested again JAM made a grate post this is more for the general public ever body needs to tell friends to watch get behind the sport we love not knock it we need to try to build it not tare it down best of luck to the show

I live in NYC, and the top five on ny best on that list is false. probably not even top 50 except for maybe beretta. lets start with that. I've met all of the people on that show so this is a somewhat biased review but not in the sense of I'm being in favor of the characters. i dont know any of them well at all.
mika and earl live here and I didnt see earl and mika is not built for tv, his personality is cold. tony robles wasn;t mentioned.
the show is very repetitive without any character development.
there's three major amateur tour's and not once were they even mentioned, they should have included them, show pool in a different light than just gambling. tournaments are very fun atmospheres.

they missed the mark so far.

but before I get jumped on, it's only two episodes. we'll see. I'll keep watching to support pool. it's not terrible, but we'll see if it does decent enough to at least get some attention. hope you all watched and can include on the review. if it does decent and they were able to get a second season they should expand on the tours and the country, or at least bring people in from other states to include in the action.

i don't knoe crap about what a tv show should be or anything, but i guess what i would think would be interesting to see.
Earl, Mika, Rodney, Dennis, and Tony are all signed to do their own show so that's why they will not be appearing in this one. Their show has been picked up by a network and set for 17 shows later this year!

for all that did not like the show why don't you watch the new show about getting cats out of trees lol

Show is half between Storage Wars and Pawn Stars. Who cares how realistic it is... we all know it's not, but that's not the point. The point is... it's very entertaining. I wish that show and its cast the very best. I didn't want it to end last night.

I wish the network was a little looser about needing a cable subscription. No cable = can't watch.

I live in a real small town AL and I just got back from the coffy shop we don't even have a pool room in my town but about four or five guys at the coffy shop that don't play pool and know that I play ever chance I get said they saw the show and enjoyed it and said they would tune in next time

An academy award is not in it's future.

Seriously folks, I think that we all want it to succeed and pool to be thrust into mainstream, but unfortunately a show of this poor quality, cheesy plot, forgettable characters, lack of a storyline, a script comprised of nothing more than yelling, slang, and cussing, acting that barely reaches the "mugging" level, un-notable cinematography, and no "hook" whatsoever, just falls too far from the mark to accomplish anything more than give a short termed "gig" to a few of our friends. :sorry:

That said, Mike D. deserves some credit for carrying off his part better than the rest of this "cast".

We support the game and the game is out there for all to see...let's hope the masses will sign a petition for billiards to be an Olympic sport.

Yes indeed. Cue Sports as an Olympic event. My vote would be for one of the games to be One Pocket, but viewers might find it a bit dull. Perhaps Nine, or 10-ball might be the more logical choices although 3-cushion could have some appeal. These could be done in both team, and individual events.
It will be a venue like this where Pool makes it's comeback, and not in some bullshit reality show where everything is staged and scripted, and cute girls with little talent are shown to be what today's pool scene is all about, and where reality has little or nothing to do with anything.
Come on sheeple, these games we all play mean more to us than this.

This is the best news on here. More pool reality shows are only good for the game imo.
