Mike D.'s Carom on the 9

Hey all,

On last night's The Hustlers, Mike finished off Ross with an extreme 90 degree carom off the 4 into the 9. The nine was close but not hanging. He came close to following the 9 in with the cue ball. When I shoot that I scratch. What's the best way to avoid the follow-scratch??

Just don't shoot it :)
The only reasons I can think of to shoot a shot like that is showing off when your sure of winning the match or have no other way to win.
 
There is a good chance of scratching if the 9 is in the jaws. But if the CB taps the 9 slow, it will not scratch. If the CB hits the 9 fast it might carom off the the side and not scratch. It's all the speeds in the middle that will scratch. Same thing as when you do a combo where the 2nd ball is in the jaws. If the first object ball has roll on it when it hits the ball in the jaws, both balls might fall.

Edit, leaving the CB in the jaws? Johnnyt
 
You shoud go to the side rail first , come off that rail to kick the 9. Then there is no scratch. Douche might have taken 4-5 takes...it is a fantasy show...lol.

Truth be known, I'd wager that many shots are staged , with several takes to get it right. Much of this Reality Show is pure Fantasy BS, targeting the Masses and not the Knowledgeable.
 
I knew folks would hijack the thread to slam the show, but I was hoping for a few more thoughts about the shot he made.
 
Yeah, Probably some showing off on Mike's part...but at that point in the match, he was far enough ahead to lose a game.

With my low skill level, I'd never attempt it...but at his level? Easy 75% he wouldn't scratch.

I KNOW the show is dramatized...of course it is. Still fun to watch....

I enjoy the show and am also glad to see pool on national TV.

Not to bd nitty - but several times the slow motion shot is using a different style/brand if ball. I saw a centennial 3 ball- anoth mismatched ball and such.

Most would not notice. Also the 4 ball is a TV colored ball - not sure the rest are.

Still they are doing a nice job!

Yep the final shot is obviously staged and edited. First the table as diagrammed for the winning carom shot is completely different than the table position after Mike makes the 3 ball in the side. The 4 and 9 are lined up in the middle by the spot for an interesting combo bank cross corner, a shot IMO more interesting than the staged shot Mike explains in the diagram. For the staged final shot both 4 and 9 are moved into the carom position. And when Mike goes back to the table after the tutorial there is a new 2nd piece of chalk on the long rail. (Maybe Mike missed the bank and Ross got another shot?)

Also the spinning cue ball following the 9 into the hole with obvious left hand english performs some unnatural behaviors reversing its spin before it hangs. Maybe Dr. Dave could explain this action but in slow motion it looks fishy. All in all close enough to qualify as reality TV.

Ok first of I might get this wrong cause i'm not sure i know how to do multiple pics, so here goes.
Let's start with the topic at hand. The mere fact that you even ended up with that shot is more amazing that making the shot IMO
First is the table going from the 1 to the 2.
then the shot from 3 to the 4
and last...
 
Boy I would like to see Mike Frost explain these

and one more for good measure.
first is the shot from the 1 to the 2
next is the shot on the 2 ball. Now i looked at this one a few times cause i though maybe he bumped the 2 ball down but then i couldn't see how the CB got behind it, so yeah, about that.

How much would you like to wager sir. I will bet everything I have. None of the shots were staged...all of the matches were played legitimate with no predetermined outcome.
There were shots that were made in the match were then recreated at another time for different camera perspective.
 
I believe it's been explained in interviews that some misses and safety's are edited out. Hence you see balls seemingly changing position between shots.

I'm still scratching my head about something from The Jenn vs Scotty match. She shoots in the 2, then the 3, and then someone shoots at the 4 which we see going towards the upper left corner.

Next she is shooting at the 4 which is in the jaws of the corner. Maybe she originally missed the 4 and Scotty also missed the 4. It was confusing because in the show it looks like she shoots the 4 twice.
 
I think it's important to keep in mind that it's a TV show.

It's purpose is to be entertaining to the masses of people out there who may tune in to watch it.

I'd much rather it appeal to 25% of the non pool playing public and none of the pool players, than have it appeal to 75% of the pool players and none of the non pool playing public.

I would not only expect, but hope that they would stage shots and edit footage and whatever else they need to do to make it entertaining to the public. I watch the show trying to see it from the perspective of the average non pool playing Joe, and I think it's entertaining. I like it that way. Hopefully, there's a million or two that see it the same way.

The thing is, the editors and producers of the show are not pool players and seem to have a very poor attention to detail. Continuity errors happen all the time in movies/tv shows and to the untrained eye, they go unnoticed. This just happens to be a forum full of trained eyes that are nitpicking the show apart. Trust me, I do too but I also see it from all angles because while I'm a pool player, I also work in television and know what it takes to make a show watchable.

They take all of this footage back and try to create a story out of it… and they're really just doing the best they can. This isn't TAR. While these people ARE playing for real, the final edit is not going to come off like you're watching live. Just the reality of tv.
