The Hustlers, Season 1, Episode 7

I remember watching the trailer before episode 1 aired and I saw two guys in the ring sparring, I wonder if these two are the ones?

How come every thread displaying anything but friendly, gentlemanly, soft spoken conversation during pool turns into "it's a travesty for the sport?" Pool is pool, played mostly in loud, liquor pouring, dirty bathroom establishments; known for gambling, bad language, and loudmouth drunks. Hell, look at this site forum! You can't go 3 threads without an argumentative, drama-filled, thread crapping debate between multiple AZ'ers (imagine getting them together in person)!!

Onto the show (The Hustlers). The creators are learning as they go, obviously not pool players. They've gotten better at cut/edits between stroke and shot, allowing the viewer to actually see the entire shot. I think without the show encouraging/influencing their drama, these players on the list are probably normal pool hall characters. Ross needs to leave his GF at home, her whining and butting in gets a fast forward on my DVR.

I stopped by Steinway that day, and did something considered sacrilegious. I had a Pre-Franklin Southwest shaft, that I bought from Emily Duddy's BF, and was playing with it on a SW tribute cue a couple of tables away. They say is there bad mojo when you do stuff like that:D

You sound like a very smart shopper to me. The balls will still go in the pocket regardless of who's logo is on the "pin". ;)

I simply love the show....
Hustlers..
Street Outlaws
Counts Kustoms
Gas Monkey
<~~~~~~~missing Monster Garage

Take away reality TV and you got the news and Halmark
Screw that:

Although I appreciate the guys getting this on TV, Why The F*** can't pool be presented on television as sophisticated, professional, and without adversary?

Because it's not? lol

Think about it, professional sophisticated pool would be just as unrealistic as any reality tv show. This is what we get because it's very close to the real thing. The characters on The Hustlers are real people and chances are we all know someone who acts just like each of them.

Everyone knows an Amy and a Gary. Consider Barry Behrman for a moment. He's a walking reality tv show. Earl Strickland. Barton vs Lou = ridiculous tv. Scooter. Minnesota Fats. Ralph Greenleaf. Masked Marvel X. The man dressed as a woman who hustled games for over 20 years. Countless incidents of people being cracked over the head with a pool cue. It's always been this way.

It's closer to reality than some want to admit, Jerry Springer is too. The situations need to be staged to capture it on film but I assure you those are real rednecks doing what comes naturally. None of what you have seen on The Hustlers is beyond what any real hustler would or could do.

Then why not a reality show about homeless people living in the woods? ;)

I believe that the person you responded to would just like to see the bar raised a little. There really are some interesting and educated pool players out there. Although it could be, not everything has to be geared to the lowest common denominator.

Well, here is my 2 cents about this whole hustlers thing. I never cared for the BS that goes on in the pool room! I've watched 2 quick clips and a quick thing on Fox news about the show. All I can say is simply put,,, if your looking for a reason why pool is in the dumps??? Look no further, watch this reality show!

I'm not sure what is going on in these people heads but I wouldn't be trying to promote a sport that's in the toilet with people acting like what's in a toilet!

BUT, if there not trying to promote the game and get it up to another level, then keep the series going! If they are trying to promote pool for the better,,,, they better change there plan!

"The Hustlers"--- I guess I should know better though, all you have to do is read the name of the show!

Just my 2 cents! I would not promote (personally) the game like this, you standing at the toilet watching it swirl out of control,,,,,, a little more and it will be in the sewers going through pump stations and when it hits the treatment facility,,,,,, goodbye:(

Oh I agree with him 1000%
I would much rather see a portrayal of striving for excellence, against all odds.
The classic struggle of man vs himself...and then the triumph of man vs man.
Something more like Rocky instead of Ace Ventura pet detective.

I just wanted to point out the irony of people whining about how unrealistic it is.

Hell with it........ I'm might as well speak my mind too.
What's wrong with pool is "cannabalism"
That eat your own attitude. Instead of turning it to the Husters and letting a TV play through the commercials in one of your rooms you choose to get in the public eye as much as possible and talk shit about it. Beats all I've ever seen
You can't just wish it well and contribute by playing your TVs. Hell no, half of what I hear is I haven't even watched one episode.... Bunch of negative ass people who just want to tear something down for no reason. You get what you put in..... Not a damn thing

So let me get this straight, if there's a beef over a pool match on The Hustlers it had to be fake and made up cause that would never happen for big money....but everyone saw Scott and Alex cursing at each other last night at 2AM towards the end of their 3rd day battling...was that fake too?

Correctomundo! If a better, more intriguing idea comes along, then may it be blessed and successful. Otherwise, pool is on TV and that's better than nothing. Pop culture is the only thing proven to supercharge the industry...the boom lasts for a few years, then slowly dies. And everyone complains, but if there weren't a Hustler and a Color of Money, you wouldn't see a pool room anywhere. They'd have all closed by around 1965 or so. As bad as some might think this show is, the ego trip of a viewer who would never take the effort to go to a pool room will whisper, I could beat that girl, she's a pro? Then, he goes with his friends to Amsterdam's or some place and next thing you know, he's bought a Joss cue, joined a league team and is hooked...another generation of pool fanatics is born and the industry lurches on for another 10 years or so.

Pool isn't meant for TV, no more so than a TruTV show about checkers players. Take a look at some of the most successful "reality" shows out there and see what people say about them.

Anytime someone talks about "The Bachelor" or "Dancing with the Stars" it's all negative criticisms. People like to be negative. People feel that putting down on others is fun and they feel better about themselves. If you tell me you've seen one of those shows and thought "That chick looks like a bimbo" or "That guy is an idiot," then you're a hypocrite.

Here we go again , and I'll repeat for the 100th time the color of money brought a small fraction of people to pool compared with the APA .. Leagues whether it be APA , BCA TAP have carried pool for decades ,, the league system is designed to have players go up teams have to break up and bring in lower level players ,, every league is looking for new players who can play their a hot comoady,, the show might bring in a few stragglers but thats about it ,,

I agree to a certain extent! What kind of player will you bring in to the sport?? I can beat that girl?? You get a C- player and think he's God all of sudden.

People are saying "well pool on tv is better than no pool on tv"! REALLY?????

If this is the level of intelligence,,, pool is done:(

I want to see pool prosper probably more than anyone here. BUT, if you think creating a reality tv show about "hustling" is going to help,,,,, it's not!

People are going to hate me, but CJ Wiley had the idea! Need to go public. Need to start doing a lot of charity work!-------- CHARITY?????? "Does that mean I ain't gonna make nuttin"? YUP!!!!!!! It sure does!

When me and MD were on talking terms we had a conversation about what we thought needs to be done! I said to him that this generation of pool players needs to make a sacrifice and bring the game to them! Charity work!! He somewhat rolled his eyes but I don't think in a bad way about the idea, but in a way saying (which he didn't say), buddy I sacrifice enough just trying to stay in the sport.

I totally understand how he felt and don't blame him one bit! BUT, you need to bring the sport to the people. Showing how people hustle each other in the pool rooms isn't helping the image of the sport that I want to see.

How about some charity events? How about making donations??(donations doesn't always mean$$$)!

I got a great idea, and I hope MD reads this because he can pull this off! Mike, get a the right people together and go to the children's hospital and tell them you would like to set up a pool table somewhere in the hospital for the kids to watch and maybe hit some with you. Put a nice show together. Bring a couple of the higher ups along with you. Stay for a few hrs. Make some shirts, hats, socks, whatever!! Give em away! Get the kids involved and you will a get a parent or 2 involved! Maybe you will begin a different kind of fan base!

It's not difficult at all to make something like that happen! It takes a little time and patience! Most of all it takes a lot of running around(work) to get it done!

Charity and fundraising done right can go a long way! Just sayin:)

And another person who has great ideas (I know I know) but CJ has stated in the past about charity work!

So, do you watch a reality show about hustlers and support it? Or do you go to a great charity event and support the cause? It's easy and difficult at the same time, isn't it?

Remember, sacrificing, done right can go a long way. But we all know it doesn't happen overnight. A generation or 2 is gonna have to make a decision!!!

I agree, hang. "To shut up and play" would be truly boring to the viewers.
I don't like my game being represented so as to embolden any
"harmful" stereotypes that are out there already.

Again however, I give credit to the producers for generating a pool product.

This seems like a no-win situation for me personally:
if this show eventually bombs, the pool image the show is trying to evoke goes away.

If it does well, the viewing public will be given a untrue picture of the professional,
artistic, and technical game really is.

Oh, the agony! :)

You left out the part that newbies will think it is ok to act this way around action sets and tourney matches if they chose to partake in such things either as a participant or spectator. This is one of the few reservations I have about the show, otherwise I like it a lot!
