I know "some" pool players love their Ivory...

But if you play with ivory you are a BIG part of the problem. Whether or not you were lead to believe it was pre-ban or not by poachers...it's all about supply and demand.

Karma, Let's pull your teeth out and make a ferrule.

Why is supposed pre-ban ivory considered OK by so called pool aficionados anyway?

"The Elephant died before the general public fully understood where it came from"!

At Least high quality Gabon Ebony is still plentiful for cue makers.

Do high-end piano makers still use ivory on their keys? If they do, shame on them too

DAKAR (Reuters) – The central African state of Gabon, home to half of Africa’s endangered forest elephants, has impounded more than 200 kg (440 lb) of ivory in what may be its largest seizure ever.

Gabon is seeking to promote ecotourism and has poured money into protecting its 50,000 forest elephants, coveted by ivory poachers for their particularly hard, straight tusks. Numbers have been falling dramatically in nearby Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic.

“We can confirm the seizure of around 200 kg of ivory, which represents about 20 elephants,” said government spokesman Alain Claude Bilie By Nzé.

The conservation group EAGLE said two Gabonese men originally from Nigeria and Cameroon had been arrested on Monday.

Professor Lee White from Gabon’s National Agency for National Parks said one of the suspects worked for Gabon’s Water and Forest Department.

Bilie By Nzé said the seizure did not necessarily show that poaching was getting worse in Gabon, since the elephants might have been killed a long time ago.

Elephants in the northern Minkebe national park have been particularly vulnerable in recent years because it adjoins Cameroon, where anti-poaching measures are more lax.

Here we go again. I recommend that we burn at the stake, anyone who even remotely offers any ivory for sale. We should first tar and feather them. Then all cues should also be burned along with piano's and all musical instruments as well as all guns, knives and anything ever made with ivory. The word ivory should be banned from the English vocabulary. We should start another fund so we can all donate to another worthless charity so that the CEO's and board members can draw huge salaries for their tireless work on behalf of the endangered elephant. (ad nauseam)

The problem has been around since before many of us were alive. They banned it in 1976 and again in 1989 and what has that done? You have idiots running these organizations and making these claims. They do so rightfully hoping that the public will feel sorry for and donate their hard earned dollars so that they can draw salaries for something that isn't really a problem. It can be managed but there is more money for charities when things are NOT managed.

Why manage it when we can keep the controversy going for decades. Since 1989, nothing has changed and nothing ever will because no one wants the actual change they preach for. You mean to tell me that in 26 years since 1989, nothing changed! If you ask me, t's all left wing propaganda. But that's a story for a different day, time and channel.

The ivory ban is a comedy........poaching will continue ad infinitum.

If you want to protect endangered wildlife, fund a comprehensive game preserve system.

Thousands of game wardens, well armed, modern night surveillance systems, drones, etc.

Do the math......how much could this cost?.....$200mm, $400mm, $700mm.....it is not some insurmountable #.

Let all the countries that signed the Wildlife Protection Act pony up some money. Tax the sale of legal ivory already in the USA and elsewhere in the world, wildlife protection organizations
could help fund this, promote this entire program as some type of endangered wildlife rejuvenation program.....and make sure the penalties for poaching are severe and prosecuted........

This would actually accomplish something instead of passing laws that ineptly address the issue of saving the elephants.......and there are more species than elephants that need protecting
in countries other than Africa but passing laws that do not accomplish much is just moronic. You have to pro-actively attack the problem and that hasn't happened yet and likely won't......how sad.

Look at that poor tree. The elephant killed it.
Elephants' poop add to the global warming . Worse, they kill trees by the thousands.

I am considering lobbying for a ban on ignorant ramblings on the use of ivory. As a compromise, I would be willing to settle for allowing the continued use of pre-ban ignorance.

For a theme song to these fictional rants on Ivory, where the uninformed alarmists post misinformation, I suggest using Rick Nelson's hit and renaming it "Trolls Rush In".

So your premises are that a) nothing has changed since 1989 b) we need to manage it. Let's dive into those shall we? Things actually have changed since 1989. Jan 1990 the CITIES appendix one ban for African elephants went in effect. This was a complete international ban on the ivory trade. The ivory markets closed and the price for ivory plummeted. Poaching was greatly reduced thus ending the epidemic of the time. No demand no supply after all. In 1997 CITIES reclassified ivory to appendix two for several African countries, which is another way of saying they moved to a managed model. With the sale allowed to CITIES approved countries the markets started back up, sales proceeded, and the poaching went up right along with it. The criminal syndicates that were active in the pre-ban 80s started operating again. Hey look there is demand so now there is supply.

You gotta love the typical ignorant conservative that creates a fantasy story to fit their preconceived narrative that ultimately ends up blaming lefties. It's not story for a different day, time and channel. It's already happened on this thread.

Large, intricate ivory carvings sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars in China, where demand has increased in recent years.
Really?????

Most all of them are woefully ignorant, but it doesn't seem to matter to them. Reality and common sense just doesn't fit into their talking points and mission, which is to make ivory like cocaine...despite the fact that humans have been using it in various art forms for tens of thousands of years.

By that logic, we could bring back slavery. Slaves have been used for thousands of years as well.

You must study up on economics. Demand does not disappear and prices do not drop because supply decreases or vanishes. Its totally opposite of what you say.

Demand is not the same thing a Sales. My demand that you read a book does not necessarily increase sale. It does although increase demand on books of Econimics.

Just out of curiosity.. When will we read how they caught a group of 12 poachers and put them to death?

You're a sick puppy, but that kind of reply is not unexpected....smh

And arguing the validity of a practise based on historical usage of a product is equally as asinine. We used to use asbestos, until we discovered it caused health problems.

You ivory nuts crack me up with your rhetoric of how you think you're actually HELPING to stop poaching because you only buy pre ban ivory. Your ignorance is cute :)

I say load up on the white stuff, boys. It obviously makes you feel free, liberated and uncontrolled, and that's what we all want for you.

Please don't quote or reply. I'm done arguing with you guys. Consume until they're dead. It's your God given right. I won't get in your way.

Using pre-ban Ivory does not have anything to do with poaching, but it has everything to do with having no effect on encouraging poaching.
