Expensive shooting cues

I alternate from High-end to midrange depending where I'm going
to play. For league, I play with a Jerry -R- "Boti" variant that plays
as good as any cue I own.
During casual play at Hard Times or The Jointed Cue, I usually
play with the High-end Vintage Cues I've collected over the past
40+ years. Lots of good friends there, so we all watch out for each
other's equipment.

I have never played in a league up to this point. I have however been shooting pool for several years. I have been looking around a lot lately at expensive cues and wanting to buy one. I have found a few to choose from that are appealing to my eye as well as they seem to be pretty high quality as well for production cues.

I read tonight a thread about people stealing cues while out playing in leagues. This concerned me a bit. I know it could definitely be a problem in some of the unfamiliar areas people play pool in. The shooting cue I am thinking about will cost about a grand and the jump cue will cost probably a couple hundred as well. I don't normally go to pool halls often at all as I own a table.

There are a lot of people on this forum that I believe own expensive cues to use not just collect. I am wondering if they only use them at home or during tournaments in safe places and neighborhoods.

Stolen cues are really not a problem.

Just be sure to keep a careful eye out and be aware of your surroundings. Then just grab it and run like hell.

I have a fair number of cues. I have some that are designated league / tournament cues if i'm going into rooms I don't know. I've had someone walk off with one of my favorite cues while I was breaking with a break cue. In a span of 5 seconds he had grabbed it and walked over to another table where he was showing it off. So I confronted him about it and he said "oh i thought it was a house cue". Either he was full of it or has no idea about how much custom cues can run. Needless to say, I took my cue out of his hands carefully and went back to my table.

If you feel comfortable in a room you know well where people will watch your back and your cues then by all means break out the $5k + cues and show them off and enjoy playing with them. Some people can't tell the difference between an $800 production cue and a $3,000 + custom. If you're going somewhere new or sketchy, tone down the style and play with something that doesn't' look too desirable or out of place.

The ol' grab and run... it's all in good fun until someone sticks their foot out and you're laying on the floor with a bunch of pissed off pool players standing over you

My best selling price range on a custom cue that is going to be played with everywhere is $895. But like someone else mentioned take it to the bathroom with you are get someone to watch it.

My player is about $2k, my Instroke case, jump/break, other odds/ends add up to about $600 more. I take it everywhere I go to play, even on business trips to pool rooms I don't know. I had an expensive Joss cue stolen out of my car once back in the early 90s, broke my heart, but nothing you can do about it. I keep my cues close at all times, even if I'm not playing, my case is always in my hand or leaning against my leg. What's the sense in having a cue and set up if you never leave home with it? I understand someone having a "bang around" cue for league or bar play, just not my style. My wife is always busting my chops about where I carry my wallet or watch out for this or that...my response is always the same, I DARE them to try...I honestly look forward to it.

I have some nice cues & I buy & sell nice cues... they are played with all the time. I just remain cautious bout the environment & the people around me. Did have on idiot bump into once, I guess those things will happen.

I'm 73 years old & I have been around.. what's the use of having a great cue, if you are going to keep it hidden & don't use it. That's why I bought it, to use it.

Think of all the nice cues around the world that used everyday.

Remember this, you could be in a car wreck & get taken out, then your broken bones won't let you play as good as you did once. I had that happen to me. So I use my nice cues while I'm still alive.
