Longer cue

Anyone tried using a cue stick with a longer butt? I'm thinking of having one made with a 34" butt and using a standard length low deflection shaft with it. Should measure out to an overall length of about 63", I'm 6'4" tall and often wondered about trying a longer cue stick.
Any experienced users of such or enlightened thoughts on oversized cue sticks would certainly be appreciated.

You may want to try a Balance Rite extension before investing in a longer butt. It's a 4" extension that is added at the joint.

Make sure you order the correct extension for your pool cue joint (ex: 3/8-10).

Newsheriffintwn is a member on AZB that advertises extensions in the for sale section. He makes these extensions, they are said to be of better quality than Balance Rite.

I'd give you a review of his work, but he's a little late with my order by about 10 days.:frown:

One of our League players is 6' 4" or so, and had Jim Pierce build him a 32"
Butt and 32" Shaft. His game has improved a lot over the past year.
I am 5' 10" and been playing with 60" Cues (30/30) for at least 10 years.
Also have a 2.5" Ebony Extension that I use on my Jerry -R- Cue and seem
to play better with that cue than any other. Don't know if it's a perceived
improvement or real, but I'll take it just the same.

I would recommend a standard length butt with a short screw in extension. yes I have tried a 34" butt.

I am 6.2 and one of my shafts for my main player has been shortened by a inch .

I don't really notice the difference in less I am focusing on its length which I don't .

As of having a butt made, thats really going to change balance points and possibly increase the weight allot depending what kind of wood you plan on having it made out of.

I would go maple because its light weight.

I went longer for a while. Got up to 62". I then went back to standard length with an extension and actually like it better. I still mess around with longer cues from time to time but I like the 58" cue. I thought the longer cue would help with my stroke but it really messes up my close game. For example, if I'm playing one pocket and just moving around the stack or playing on a bar table I play much better with a standard length cue. If I only played 9 ball on 9 footers, I might think about a longer cue but otherwise I like the standard length. Also, there are several people on here that will make you custom extensions for any cue. BTW, I'm 6'4" for reference.

Anyone Lucky enough to own one of Larry's Cues already
have a Pool Playing Machine in their possession. I have
two of his 60" Wood Pin Cues which perform extremely well.

When stances were more upright, the standard was 57". FWIW, Earl Strickland is using a longer cue, and I heard it's 71 inches. I saw Earl at Steinway yesterday and he believes he is playing the best pool in his life.

I'm 6 ft tall and have used 60" cues, 30/30 splits for about 30 years. I never really liked standard length cues. Everybody's got their something.

Thank you all,

I'm certain of only one thing about having a longer cue made for me, that being I want all the extra length in the butt portion. I do not want to add anything to the shaft portion because I'm sure it would change to deflection rate and I really don't want a whippy, noodlie shaft. I am not overly concerned about weight since weight is added to most standard length cues, as long as it can be kept around 20 oz. I have no problem with that. I also feel like the balance will require some adjustment but it shouldn't be to hard to get accustomed to once I've played a few hours with it. Im not risking a fortune, I'm going with a sneaky pete and see if I like it.

Thanks again

I have no idea who ever came up with the "all cues must
be 58 inches" or else we're all gonna die rule.

I read somewhere that a much better general rule of thumb is
that cues should reach up to your shoulder.

Don't know if there is any scientific fact for this or if it's just
another "58 inches or die" bs rules that seem to exist in pool.
(another one is that LD's are somehow good for your game)

I like my cues to be about 62 inches. 60 is fine but 62 is even better.
I have lots of 58s but the longer cues work better for ME.

I encourage you to experiments as much as you can with various
lengths to see what works for YOU!!!!
That 58 inch thing isn't a rule or a law in any way.
Just see what works.

Worth a try..

I am 6' 3' tall. I have a 62' Meucci Sneaky and 3 Pat Diviney 61" cues. I don't think I will ever go back to a cue under 60". I think the standard 58" cue length stuff is a good starting point considering most players are probably under 6' and have a shorter wing span then I do.

But, as a player gets more into "their game", then experimenting with different cue lengths, weights and balance points may help. My Diviney cues have 30" shafts and 31" butts and no weight bolts. I like every thing about them, but some one else might not.

Pat's son also made me an 8' extension that screws into the butt of my 2 Diviney playing cues. I shoot much better with the extension then I ever have with the bridge!

As for Earl and Shane and their long cues, I think they could adjust to about any cue length and still have an A + game!

Years ago there was an article about some of the secrets of playing great pool. The one that fits this thread is , "play with the shortest cue you can that is comfortable'". I know Earl and bunch have stated the wave of long cues but we all know pool players will try anything to improve there game. Shorter cues for me.

One thing to beware of about longer cues is that, dependig on where you play, you may start running into walls more often.
