Oscar Dominguez Does It Again

What time is it?

Oscar had a scheduled match in the 9 Ball yesterday @ The DCC (also note that this is a Mosconi Cup points event). The match time was 2:15. His opponent - Randy Hanson owner of Big Dogs - thought the match was at 2:45. When Randy didn't show Oscar was given a forfeit and it was a done deal. But then Randy shows up albeit late, Oscar voluntarily goes downstairs and requests a lift on the forfeit and they play the match.

Oscar knew the guy was a decent player.

End result - Oscar lost the match. Life goes on.

I figure that to be a display of real class by Oscar.

No question about it Oscar is an honorable man. But his request should have been turned down. Rules are put in place for a reason and matches played at amended times
can throw out schedules for players who are zoning in to play their own match.

Oscar, as a Tournament Organiser himself, should have acknowledged that and accepted the forfeit and his opponent should have not requested it.
It was the job of the person running the event to ensure that times and rules are enforced for ALL participants.
Too much Mister Nice Guy, Oscar.

I agree with pretty much everything said in this post.

Guess you have never been to the DCC -- I have seen them on multiple years wait wayyyyyy beyond a match time for a player whose name rhymes with *****ie Switch, cause they were told he was coming down.

Totally agree....tournament directors should make stronger decisions.
...so now, everybody who takes their forfeit is a bad guy?

These decisions should never be up to the players

I was playing recently in a tournament and almost had the same thing happen. My opponent was a well known player (also a friend) and was on the verge of a forfeit. Word was that he had his match time wrong and was on the way. I went up to the well respected TD and told them that I didn't mind waiting for him. They told me it wasn't my choice and he would forfeit if not on time. He made with a minute to spare.

The TD's reasoning was that it wasn't fair to put the opponent in the uncomfortable situation and scheduling issues for running a 100+ player tournament over the weekend. The times are posted and never changed without notifying both players in advanced.

Oscar is one of the classiest players out there.

He runs a great tour on the west coast. Just a great ambassador of the game.

I'm sure he never doubts himself for playing the match and losing. He has great character...Something more important than any game.

Character matters. Oscar apparently has it in spades. He plays the game at a high level and his character is on par with his game. It does matter how you play the game. I hope others notice this behavior and it leaves an impact. Thanks for pointing this out.

The DCC is a special situation...if a player is playing his match in another discipline...
...then the match is officially delayed.
But just being late, the forfeit should be determined by the director.

Scenario...tough guy shows up late...threatens his opponent behind the scenes...
....can't happen?...wrong...I barred a man for life in any tournament I run for this.

Yes, Oscar is a guy with integrity.
Should we be giving him credit for exhibiting common courtesy?

It's too bad we have to make such a big deal about his good actions.
Everyone should be so magnanimous from time to time.

Unfortunately, it's so easy to look good in today's corrupt and cheating society
simply by acting with that common courtesy.

Good man, Oscar.

I agree with Pro9dg - Rules are rules, regardless of wha the players want.
However, his opponent was very lucky that OD was still around. If it had been me, I would of been back in my hotel room chillaxing. and thinking about my next match

This forum is so funny.
If Oscar had taken a forfeit, then you would have had a billion forum members bashing him for winning "like that"

Damn man.
Guy does a decent thing and people still find a reason to bittch about it?
WOW.

Sure.
Rules are rules and the Derby schedule is already f$&@ed up beyond all repair. (Did you hear that derby people? You f$&@ed it up big time!)
Let's just single out one of the good guys in a sea of scumbags, for doing something that is in his nature.

God help us if Oscar turns into an assh$&@.
The forum might f$&@ing explode.

I would say it depends on why the opponent was late. If he had a legitimate reason such as another match which is part of the tournament ran late then he should be given a free pass and allowed to play.

You end up with matches being played at 2 am if you allow people to show up late for matches without a valid excuse. It impacts other people.

Those were my thoughts and I am going to be polite to those that have posted otherwise. His opponent made a human error and misread the match time. He wasn't waiting in the parking lot for his drug dealer to show up. He didn't think that his time was more valuable than others and made Oscar wait intentionally. He was late by 30 minutes max - my guess probably 20 minutes. Hopefully someone will return the favor to Oscar (or another player) someday.

For someone to post what Oscar did was wrong is well - idiotic (there I wasn't so polite).

Deja Vu

****Steve Chaplin - Oscar's opponent for his next match - was late and officially forfeited. Oscar removed the forfeit and is playing this match too.
