Tell me more about this Black Boar

Lol...I think it's so humorous that some people think the inlays should be so tight on an older Boar, well, because it's a Boar. I wish my old computer's drive didn't crash and I would show you guys some glue lines on one that I had back in the late '90s. It looked like they had an amber veneer. Please guys, learn something about cues.....these cues were made back in the day before all the fancy macros lenses and all the nit-pickiness of certain buyers and makers. The market and collecting has changed so much since. Back then cues were appreciated at an arms-length away and were used to play pool with.

Though your point is well taken, there were those who really did try and get tight tolerences with their inkay work back then. Joe Gold was one of them. What he did with a pantagraph many today dont have as much luck duplicating with a CNC. He continued his excellence when he eventually did move to using a CNC machine even though to todays standards, though its considered an "old" machine, it's has just as tight tolerances as any machine can be setup today. Mostly Joe's doing. Not to mention, before Joe, Gus S. was doing very nice work as well. It's not always the machine but more the person working them.

This cue is a nice early example of Tony's work and will be a nice add to someones collection....

Correct me if I am wrong but when the 4 pointers were being made their were several people in that shop making them, Tim Scruggs, Bill McDaniel, Vince, Tony's brother Ralph and Tony's son. I do not know what each specific duty was but all were working together and produced quite a few 4 pointers. They also had distributors selling them so they were pumping them out.
When the shop broke up Tony zeroed in on detail and playability and on his own started making some 4 pointers with no veneers, from there he started on his own ( his brother was still working with him ) on the 6 pointers.
So the cue pictured here could have had several pairs of hands working on it is all I am saying.

Tony didn't just buy some equipment and start churning out intricate cues. There have been many transitions along the way and this cue is one of them. If I were into boars I would consider this a must have.

Well stated. We all start somewhere, and leave bread crumbs along the way. This cue is a bread crumb on BB's path that represents one of the steps they made.

Wow.

When I first saw the cue posted I didn't think it was stylistically well executed, but I didn't doubt it was 100% Boar. Partly because of the age of the cue, and partly because I had recalled seeing these elements in a Boar before. I have a good memory.

When I saw the subsequent posts I thought I better sit back, follow, and learn something.

What did I learn? Sometimes I am not as smart as I think I am, and sometimes I know more than I think and should trust myself.

Generally I qualify my opinion with "I may be wrong." And sometimes I will state exactly how and why I might be wrong. If I say I am definitely right, you can generally bet your boots on it.

When one is wrong, that's it. Game over. Time to acquiesce.

Interesting thread.

Personally, I don't necessarily have problems with imperfections or flaws in cues unless they are truly sloppy or affect the structural integrity or playability. Generally it is just part of the character of the cue to me. Current Boar offerings are beautiful and truly representative of the epitome of the art, but their perfection leaves something lacking to me.

.

This thread showcases perfectly just how many 'experts' we have here... who have no idea what they're talking about.

Priceless.

Even Gus said he wanted to buy back one of bis old cues because it was bad.
This one looks good for an early work.

Tony and Vince in the early days, could have been others. But not Tim Scruggs. He made his own cues after separating from Joss in 1978.

And yes, this thread is entertaining.

All the best,
WW

Bill McDaniel assembled "butts" for BB when BB was starting up. i'm not privy to all the details but i recall their breakup was dramatic. This was during the time period that Bill was "partners" with Tim and also assembling "butts" for him.

Actually, what you say about Bill's involvement is in conflict with what's written directly on the BB page. Didn't he actually make their early points.

Since it looks like they pulled the Showman thread I guess Id better respond here to your nonsense about NOT claiming to be an expert on Black Boar cuues... Here is a flashback..

Dude I don't know if you are just illiterate or if your that stupid. When did I ever say I was an "expert" (BELOW)... I thought the BB cue had to be the worst looking thing I had ever seen and didn't think it could come from Tony's shop (but I guess it takes a person who makes hideous inlay patterns such as yourself to recognize what was perhaps an inspiration for such work).................****in moron

You calling me "illiterate", "stupid", and a "****moron" for a "matter of fact" statement, NOT OPINION, that YOU made "Sir" is actually comical...

Here "Sir" is your "opinion":rolleyes::

I'm in the same boat as these guys ... Definitely not the work of blackboar on the short points . Also the aesthetic flow of the cue is interrupted by the short points, not a charactoristic of Tonys work

Who's the illiterate, stupid, ****moron NOW?... Too funny

By the way, it was those "hideous" inlay patterns that were part of giving the recipient ACA Cue Maker Of The Year honors in 2011. If Tony's work was my inspiration, HELL I'll take that "inspiration ALL DAY LONG....

Too bad, your industry importance was quite clear there.

When somebody calls me unwarranted names when all I do is back up my statements with FACT, I'm only acknowledging the importance OF "my" industry.... You should try it sometime

Looks like someone is having a rough day.

Look your the one who said "expert opinion" In quotes. As if I had said. " In my expert opinion this is definitely not the work of black boar". Which I didn't. Just because someone uses the word definitely does not mean they a claiming to be an expert. Obviously I did not think tony was capable of having made a cue that was so unattractive, ........much like every cue you design. This is the last time I'm going to respond to your arrogant, sensitive, butthurt remarks.
