Does the fact that there is no trust among players say something about pools image?

Is it just pool players, or is it in fact people in general that can't be trusted (if they are a stranger to you).

Maybe you would trust a fellow pool player more then a stranger off of the street, but I am thinking maybe not.

When you think of a pool player, what type of character do you imagine the average pool player has?

Trusting? Loyal? Helpful? Friendly? Lol, I am reciting part of the boy scout slogan.

I think in general, most people are good and honest. If they were not, then the entire online sales system would not work and all sellers would go out of business.

I just wonder if it is pools bad image to be the reason why AZ members do not trust each other (unless they are already very respected among the community).

I've been burned by more pool players that I knew than strangers. I trust almost no one anymore.
 
Honestly I don't think I have ever met a sane pool player lol. Most of em I know are peculiar people myself included.
 
I've known quite a few pool players that I can trust...their word is their bond.
I know even more that I would take a chance with.
I don't think we are any worse than people in business...same %

We aren't at the bottom of the barrel.....
....we can give the average politician the rainbow crush.

Trust everyone and anyone as far as you can throw them. On guard until they show their nature. Business/money has nothing to do with trust. Good faith and COD are to be separated. I met most of my friends in a lifetime through pool...however we never gambled or did business together. There was nothing to containinate the friendships. My favorite rule of thumb is...everyone is normal until you get to know them.

Yeah, I always felt uncomfortable doing business or gambling with a friend. It just does not feel right, because I am scared something might go wrong, and I will lose a friend.
 
In all my years of playing, theres only a small handful of players, whom i would call friends that knew where i lived or even had my home phone number- all of which were drug free and not much of a gambler if at all (which narrows it to nearly nobody in the pool room). Ive heard waaaay too many horror stories...

I keep 'em all at arm's length...
 
depends on money

Pool is a real life art form. Whenever you mix something like that and money, bad things can happen.

Our poolroom, when all the tables are going and including spectators, has two honest players in the whole place. I can back up my theory with first hand knowledge of which ones have been in jail more than once.

Yup. One thing about pool players is that each one is an original. That being said, in this life everyone, and I mean everyone, has their own agenda regardless of what they might say.
 
I've always viewed a poolroom as a myriad of individuals that come from all walks of life.

The one thing they have in common is they all walk to the beat of a different drummer. I trust many I've met & have dealt with the treachery of others. Not really different than any area of life, just a smaller & more concentrated sampling
 
People trust thousands of complete strangers, with their lives, every single day of their lives.

There are a few enterprises in life where being untrustworthy is not anathema, and that pool is one of those, should perhaps be our shame.

On occasion I get down to Denver and most times I get to the pool room that Measureman plays at.

I trust him to rarely miss....he never lets me down.
 
I kind of look at it this way.
The first group are the old guys I play with. Pool players, yes, but for the most part they're just regular Joes enjoying a pastime. Along with them are the league players, and the vast legion of folks who have tables in their basements and who play with friends, and family, on weekends.
The other group I see are the Pros, the Semi-Pros, and the gamblers. They, in my view, tend to be the most narcissistic of all of us who play, and may well be the reason for your question.
Understand that the many games of pool are difficult to master, if they can be mastered at all, and when looked at objectively can almost always be viewed as a duel to the death where there are no second place winners. It is, therefore, my contention that the serious player must adopt a self-centered approach to his game, and a grandiose view of his talents. This characterization is not an indictment, mind you, but seen as a necessity for the very good players to survive at the table. :smile:

So why don't you and Measure jump in your station wagon, swing by southern Canada and pick up pt, and come down to the Queen city of the Ozarks.

No offense to the OP, but the way you've been throwing threads up lately, I have to wonder, did Travis Trotter's alter ego get into his dad's stash of Red Bull? :)
