Letting kids play on my table

My newphews were in there while I wasn't home, all my cues are kept away, so they just decided to grab a ball in each hand and just started smacking them together
high quality super aramith so
No damage done but, supervision and edumacations are needed

Kids don't know there doin wrong and that's ok

the kids like to have sword fights with the cues. i used to find sneaker prints on the cloth. as they got older things got much better. a bunch of my son's friends learned how to play here and are still playing. made lots of good memories on that table.

If you decide to let em play, first give them a tutorial on how to respect the equipment, hold the cue, swing the cue etc. Ironically tho, most all parents are equal when it comes to proper usage of equipment but they will NEVER admit it because few people RESPECT pool players equipment like the owner/player. Probably best to make it off limits.

Dont be the dorky dad giving tutorials on respect Play with them and show how good you play. Do easy stuff like simple shape, some force follow, 3 and 4 railers. Or lay off at first, then get their college funds. Dont let their parents pick him up without the loot.

I got the chance to play for the first time when I was seven. I still remember it, in fact it may be my earliest memory.

I'm sure glad that the folks who owned the table let it happen.

Talk to the group before they play, give them a couple of cues that you don't care about and no food or drink but by all means let them give it a try.

Exactly this!!!

I honestly can't believe some of the retarded comments I read in this thread!

Anytime I have the opportunity to have kids over and they want to play,,, go for it guys! I have a couple of cheap cues and they use those.

NOW,,,,, my cue is MY cue! Period end of discussion! The table?!??! Let them play man!

I haven't seen a kid harm a pool table yet...if they're young enough.
...they don't have the cue power to rip a cloth.

Early teens may need supervision.

It's grown people that can't play very well that present the biggest danger....
....'bangers' with strength.
And grown ups who like to try the "scoop" jump shots. The kids at the party will be from 1 to 15 years old. My son is turning 1 and I can't wait to get him on the table.

I love teaching kids to play on my table. I even bought the Jr shark guiding wheels to help with that. Just too many to keep track of for this event.

Appreciate all of the advice on thread. There are two camps. Camp let em play and camp lock em down. I'm somewhere in the middle. I'll likely have it as a non pool day.

I get out cues for the kids to play with too. I leave out a Scruggs, a Black Boar, a Southwest and an old Joss West. If they get bored, they can swat the balls like they do with a hockey stick. I serve plenty of pizza, hot dogs, ice cream and soda too, so they won't be hungry while they play. The new carpet, well it won't last forever and neither will the Simonis cloth or the Amarith balls.

If they go near my table, I'll slap them till the snot flies. That goes for the parents too.

So, my son's birthday party is coming up and there will be quite a few kids coming. I have the Jr shark guiding wheels but I still don't want kids playing on my table when I can't keep a watchful eye on them.

I was going to have an adults only rule at first but got to thinking.....I still have the old cloth that I recently replaced. It is in good shape and I could put that on top of the good cloth so I don't have to worry as much about tearing the new stuff. Any thoughts on how to secure it? I could just lay it on top and maybe some velcro strips in the pockets? Under the rails?

I have 4 old house cues with slip on tips when kids come over to play. I picked up a cheap set of balls from Walmart for those who
want to bang any ball into any pocket. Tell them not to hit downward with a jacked up cue, and everything.. even the cloth.. should
be fine. If one won't listen and tries shooting TV trick shots.. send that little culprit packing and you'll have no problem with the rest.

Sorry, my table is NOT a toy. I didn't buy it to be sociable or to let little kids be amused on it.

Considering the abuse balls regularly take on the table on a daily basis, do you think it is even possible for a ball to be damaged by a kid smacking two together ?

Don't Do It.........You"ll Eventually Come To Regret It.

Don't Do It.....not even if you know them........some things are worth protecting.
People might wonder why or even criticize you....behind your back most likely.

So what......I don't let just anyone borrow or play with my golf clubs or my guns or my cues.
Your table is a privilege......people don't get to use it because it's there.....in front of them.
It's called "invitation" to play and until or unless it's extended by you, they only get to look.

If your table is ragged, then have at it but the OP doesn't impress me as that type player.

Just watched a kid playing in a pool hall...his father is a decent player.
The kid has a decent stroke...just shoots at anything but makes some decent shots.

His father told me is is 8 years old...which deeply offended him....
...he said "Dad, I'm nine now...two weeks ago."
..I said "Oh, you're all growed up now."

I wish I had got to hit balls at that age....I was well on my way to being 18 when I first walked into a pool hall...I could break par by then, but I like billiards better.

Let the kids play

If you bought a quality cloth it probably tougher than you think. I would be worrying more about spills than tears.

I'm getting mine started early 3,4
Can barley see over the top, but there putting in the work

I wouldn't let them play without adult supervision and even then I would say off limits.

Too many adults and kids that aren't real players think that every shot has to be a trick shot and they try to do that as they think that is the way that real good players play. This results in damage to the table, cloth, balls and etc. Who ends up with the bill? I don't think letting them play will result in the next world greatest player or pro , and is that something that you would really want some young person to end up being as a life long career?

I really don't see where there is any benefit. Think of it this way, what would they do if you didn't have a table?

The issue is more of breaking lights or spilling drinks. A nice pool table cover is invaluable. I keep my table covered but when company is over who have an interest in pool, I'll open it up. I just try to keep an eye on them and ask them to not put drinks on the table rails if I see this happening. I had one glass shade when kids were playing from a cue tip flying upward. I couldn't find a replacement, so I had to buy a new light.

No way in hell do kids play on my table. Nor most adults, for that matter.

Same here. It is not a toy. If I do let adults on I give them stroke instructions about keeping the cue level and not hitting the cloth. And no food in the area. Drinks at a distance. I'm not interested in oops or I'm sorry.

This logic works in reverse as well???

Are you svb?

Do you make your living from that table???

If the answer is no then what difference does it truly make???

Most gamblers will not give up home court advantage so IMO most tables see practice only!

While gambling is reserved for the pool hall!

Point is the table serves your purpose and is designed to be used. People seem to overstate the need the table serves which is practice and entertainment! It is not used to generate income in a home setting!
