And if he were able to keep his head on straight, Earl would still be top shelf in all games IMO.
Efren can still beat anyone playing one pocket.

Who is the best player over 50 years old in terms of current playing ability? (particularly 9 or 10 ball)
Bustamante? Earl? Efren?

You guys who say Earl for Roation, do you even know what you're saying???
Nick Varner.
Guys he is a HOF player for a reason. He is still active, and a great ambassador for us and all of pool.
I saw him a few years ago with Johnny Archer doing some exhibitions together. I got Nick aside and told him I would love to see him play Johnny some one pocket. He said he had asked many times and Johnny wasn't interested.....
Nick is certainly a candidate for the best all-around player of all time IMO. He has won championships in 14.1, 9-ball, 10-ball, and one pocket.
Personally, he is one of my favorite one pocket players. I just wish he would play more.

Don't forget his world 8 ball championship in 1994.
All around the best we have ever seen.

At the exhibition with Archer in Birmingham, he had to literally play one handed, having sliced his hand open badly the night before. Whole arm was actually in a cast. Still thumped the 2 top players in Birmingham soundly.Don't forget his world 8 ball championship in 1994.
