Who is the best player over 50 years old in terms of current playing ability? (particularly 9 or 10 ball)

Bustamante? Earl? Efren?

Rotation: Earl
All around: Busty

If he played a little more...Mike Sigel? People forget how good the jerk  was.

Interesting topic for discussion. A lot of this could be answered if there was a seniors tour like Steve had 20 years ago.

As far as choices I need to chew on this some more.

Efren can still beat anyone playing one pocket.

And if he were able to keep his head on straight, Earl would still be top shelf in all games IMO.

Thats easy!

No body is beating Busty, it aint close...,

Earl in One Pocket of course!

In order to KEEP your head on straight it actually HAS to be on straight in the 1st place.

One pocket and strategy: Efren

Rotation: Earl

busty is great all around also man, so like it's a toss up.

but this is just an opinion, if you make these three play each other, its a random who will win it, and you can keep repeating the tournament between them three and each time , a different guy will win it, thats how close it is in pool.

Your question sort of infers that players past 50 are over-the-hill.

Many legendary players continue to play at a high level well past that age. They tend to be folks who are serious about their health habits and conditioning.

You guys who say Earl for Roation, do you even know what you're saying???

I see what you mean...thet better keep the rotation to 10 balls or less......
....'cause they can't get there with Efren if there's 15 balls on the table.

Nick Varner.

Guys he is a HOF player for a reason. He is still active, and a great ambassador for us and all of pool.

I saw him a few years ago with Johnny Archer doing some exhibitions together. I got Nick aside and told him I would love to see him play Johnny some one pocket. He said he had asked many times and Johnny wasn't interested.....:p

Nick is certainly a candidate for the best all-around player of all time IMO. He has won championships in 14.1, 9-ball, 10-ball, and one pocket.

Personally, he is one of my favorite one pocket players. I just wish he would play more.

Don't forget his world 8 ball championship in 1994.

All around the best we have ever seen.

Yup.... My pick as well. Plays almost as much as Efren every day and has more patience than a glacier. I place Nicky in the same strata as Busty, Efren, Strickland, Archer, etc. Any one could win on a given day, but not many can grab a set off any one of them

At the exhibition with Archer in Birmingham, he had to literally play one handed, having sliced his hand open badly the night before. Whole arm was actually in a cast. Still thumped the 2 top players in Birmingham soundly.

Pool players are subject to over-cut anything....
...even themselves.
