That "small wood band" IS the butt cap... at least that's what I heard SW calls it..

If you have eyes and a brain, you'll see common design elements... Some of the copycats go all the way and use the brass 3/8-11 pin and try to replicate the 'parabolic' taper.
The design, mostly the product of DPK, is pure genius.
