Sorry to hijack part of this thread but.... Understand exactly where Johnny is coming from. For years, some of our local league players have complained about me. They told me I'm just too good! I'm to the point of no longer participating locally. This past weekend I played in a local 9' tournament and lost to a local non-league player in the finals. Was not even close! He is dramatically better than I. Hard to admit but true. My first reaction? Ban him! Sound familiar?

Don't know what the solution to the question really is but banning or barring a player is not it. Keep hoping other players practice a bit more. Take a lesson. Do something instead of complaining. My feeling is this is a direct result of the rush to handicap players. If you practice and get better, they raise your handicap. There is no reward other than personal pride. And yes I'm guilty of that.

Johnny, what are your thoughts on a solution to the Karen "Problem"?

Lyn

The only solution, IMO, is for pool to grow so much (on both the Men's and the Women's side), that the players of true pro caliber such as Karen Corrr, would not bother with weekend local stops. The reason being, even if they won them, they would make LESS money at the weekend stop than going to their own true professional tournaments and finishing towards the bottom.

The same thing happens on the men's side. Although there, its not as bad, because the gap between the male pro's who enter the weekend events and the local top male players, is not as big as the gap between the top pro women, and the local women.

Hey Lyn, did sossei play in that tournament?
I also heard hatch and earl were in the area but not confirmed to play as well.

Once you start getting to a certain level it is not as easy as just practicing or getting a lesson, at least in my opinion. The improvement happens so slowly it could take years for you to catch someone who just cleaned your clock. Many people have jobs and family and cant put in the immense time to get to a shortstop level but still want to compete. I believe the problem with handicaps is that they use a 100% handicap to theoretically make it an even match. I think handicapping would be better and more accepted if they used 70%-80% handicap so the better player who put in his time is rewarded for his effort and has reason to improve. I understand the position of both sides, the weaker player knows he won't win and doesnt want to donate to the player week after week and the better player is being penalized for putting in the table time. Some guys that play once a week are happy getting a huge handicap, especially for league play and you hear that "its just for fun anyway", if that is the case why keep score? When you have a low rated S/L it is easier to have a good day and play above your level, moreso I think then the better player. Thats why I think using something lower than 100% handicap would make sense.

I've seen Karen play a few times. She's very good, I think her Snooker background gave her something special, as it did for Allison. Shooting long shots accurately & continuously gives a player something that a bar box player may not have.

I agree and she has great sportsmanship too... In my last match against her, she thought she offended me when she stopped to ask a tour director (not a jpnewt event) about a rule ... Later she approached me and apologized. She didnt need to apologize cause she didnt do anything wrong at all nor did she offend me. Classy lady!!

Since the day I first met her, she is nothing but classy. Julie Kelly used to travel with her and give her competition at every event they played in. I was soooo happy when Karen finally won a Joss stop years ago. She is a proven winner both on and off the table.

Why does it matter if she wins all the time.
It's not like there is a WPBA tour to play on. Karen plays good.
People that might complain, it's real simple.
Either practice harder or quit pool.

I hope she stomps on everyone for all time.
Tour was actually tougher 16 years ago or so when everyone was coming over to qualify for the WPBA and you had a bunch of strong local trying to win the qualifying spot from these euro champs.

Field isn't nearly as strong now as it was then. AT ALL.
And if that rubs some people the wrong way, sorry. It's the truth.
No regular on that regional tour is ever going to play as good as she is capable of playing or come close to winning the titles she has won.
No one.
Everyone is playing for second and they KNOW IT.

Karen is a killer.
She has earned the right to make as many ATM withdraws as she possibly can.

SS,

Understand your point. My question is, how long can the tour(s) survive if no one but Karen wins? In my mind, it is no different than Dennis Hatch showing up at a regional tour event and massacring the field. Eventually entries drop and the tour director has to make a choice. In the case of the Joss Norhteast, MZ barred Dennis from the player auction. Dennis eventually went elsewhere (don't know why) when his bi-weekly paycheck stopped  . There has to be a balance point! Honestly not sure where that is. Do you?

You are asking questions about ethics IMO.

I'd rather a scratch tour die because the sissies drop out, than have it flourish because the best players now have to handicap themselves somehow.
But that's just me.

I certainly didn't see Zuglan getting mad at himself when he was winning his own tournaments with star studded fields back in the day.
You know, that right there is a conspiracy theory lots of people have.

That he started the tour because regular pool sucked and so he could make money from his own tour, make all the rules, and win it's tournaments for an added bonus.
I have ALWAYS had an issue when they guy running the tour and making the rules, plays in his own event.
I don't care how awesome they are, or how much integrity they have.
To me, that is kinda a conflict of interest.

NEWT died when the WPBA went stupid.
It's a shell of its former self.
Everyone who was there when Karen first came over and watched as the tour got stronger and stronger, knows this to be true.

But at the same time, pool is a shell of its former self.
People can argue till the end of time that it's not and how it's thriving, bottom line is the prize money was better, 25-30 years ago.

Doesn't really matter if a tour dies or not anymore cause I don't play anymore. So what do I care.

Dennis winning all the time is simply because there wasn't really anyone else that could compete.
Again, a reflection of the state of pool as a whole.
Do we know his specific rule wasn't because of some of the Calcutta funny business that happened at a couple tournaments? Hmmmm.
You've been around long enough. You know what I am talking about.
Just like how Zuglan would kick people off the tour because they were disruptive. If anything, that's Zuglan's greatest quality.
Don't like it? BYE BYE!

I remember back in the day, one joss event could have Ginky, Tony, Robbie, Chuck, Delicious, Teddy, Alcano, Santos, Earl, Keith, Mika, Rempe, Frankie, and everyone else. Regional KILLERS.

Pools not that way anymore.
Never will be again.

If a regional tour is going to die, let it.
I hope Karen kills the tour.

Geeze. She's in the Hall of Fame for God sake. I guess she needs to get a real job if she can't get a sponsor or pay her way to Aisia for Amway and other tournaments.

JT, here's the truth brother - if you are the one robbing that little tourney all the time it's all good and if you're not the one then everyone is a hater. Oh well.
