Interesting observation in an old Mosconi vs Fats video

Is it just me, or is anyone picturing this discussion going on in these guys local pool room?!! Seriously, funny stuff and very entertaining. You guys will never run out of things to argue about. when I'm 50 miles offshore this weekend fishing I'm going to ask the two guys I've been fishing with for over 35 years if a man can be considered beautiful.oh wait, that's a pretty long swim, maybe I will keep that to myself.

What happens at sea, stays at sea.

Actually Lou, if its a matter of choice..Yes, my preference would certainly be Mr. Jones, over your hero! :p

In making a comparison of the two, female-wise....

PS..However, unlike you, I do confess to having Jennifer's picture on MY ceiling..Not Willy's! (or Danny's)

..Over and out..Cocktail time!

Dick, I don't have anything on my bedroom ceiling. But I will confess that for a very brief moment I considered doing a Michelangelo, Sistine Chapel kind thing. But Gail wasn't having it.

I think that if you read some of the magazine and newspaper stories from back then he was taken seriously. Not like anyone was doing a lot of fact check on a pool hustler's stories, nor was there any inter web to help verify. I mean, how would you fact check a gambling story about Fats beating Happy the Chinaman or even all the other hustlers he claimed to have beaten like a drum?

I believe that for us -- amateur pool players -- it's all very funny and easy to laugh off. But look at it from the perspective of guys that really were good at their craft. Imagine in your own profession some blowhard who exaggerated all his claims and accomplishments and subsequently basked in the spotlight shined on him by an unwitting media, which then led to him making a ton of money.

It's probably driven more than one of us nuts.

Lou..I must say, that you are acting just like the few pro's you are trying to describe!..You are taking Fats way too seriously!..I think most of his peers took him with a grain of salt, and most were actually amused at his shenanigans!.. I only knew of a few, (DD for one) who were really turned off by his grandiose, exagerated stories of his many exploits!

Yes, he was an 'opportunist' who capitalized on the 'Hustler' movie, and the media helped him immensely!..He was also the only one with the moxie and the balls to run with that, and make a good living with it for most of his life!...He was also, without a doubt, the most colorful figure in pool history, and I don't understand why you don't want to give him his due?. ;)

PS..in your clever post #123, I can't make out the person you are exchanging the C-notes with? (is that me? did I win? :D)
..Oh wait, I get it now..Its supposed to be Barton isn't it?...I'm telling!..He'll be all over you..AGAIN! ;)

What?? You don't believe that he beat the Shah of Iran out of his Harem, or when a bird pooped on his car he got a new one? Perfectly believable!

By the way, I was a professional player, not an amateur, trying to earn money playing in tournaments. I never saw Fatty as a threat. In fact, when he showed up at an event, you could see the spectators just light up. It made everything better when he was around --- not worse. But yeah, some of the guys felt they should have been beloved more than Fatty and they were jealous when he was around.

Well, Dick, IMO, it is too bad that many of the folks that saw Fats' act went away thinking that's how a true pool player behaved. Even worse -- that that was as good as a top level pool player played. That that was all the game could be.

No Lou, you did not accuse Fatty of doing any of those dastardly deeds!..But you, (and a few others) often painted a picture of a man who was mainly into lying about his accomplishments, which he obviously did, at times..But even Fats himself knew that was just a 'smoke screen', he had no illusions about his limitations as a pool player..He knew very well, where he stood in the pecking order!

Otherwise, he wouldn't have been "triple smart" at matching up..;)..Fats was always much more into amusing people, with his tall pool tales!..And he did that better than anyone, before or since!..Thats why, as Fran said, "Any pool joint would always 'light up' when Fatty entered the room"!

PS..I'm still telling Barton you are harassing him again! ;)

My favorite Fats quote of all time:

Mosconi, after a ball he shot rolled off--"Look at that ball roll!"

Fats--"They're supposed to roll, Willie, they're rooouuunnnddd."

Dick, I have no doubt you would have been fine with him traveling around the country telling audiences, "San Jose Dick, he's a bum, a girl. I played him every night and beat him even night. By the time I was done with him they called him no Jose Dick and the only thing he could delivery was UPS."

Always easier when it ain't your ox being gored ;-)

This is all second hand info, Dick.
I was at the Nashville BCA trade show in '89.
I was told the name of his benefactor, but I can't remember it......
....Fatty was telling a story once and called him for confirmation....
....the man immediately left his office and came down to support him...he loved Fats.

we took a taxi one night to go clubbing..(I like C n W)....the taxi driver raved about Fatty...
...anytime his name came up, it seemed Nashville was overjoyed to have him.

Somebody on AZ may remember this man's name......

Mr. pt109,

I tried to help out earlier in this thread but here it is again: Roy Acuff.

RBL

Very accurate statements Rod..But I think Coco and Danny Deliberto, may be the only two people who ever actually expressed a hatred for Fats!..I understand what you're saying though...His constant bragging, in his somewhat irritating 'Brooklynese' accent, did turn a lot of people off, who never really got to know him like we did!

I've never heard of DD expressing "hatred" for Fats. What I have seen him say, many, many years ago, sounded very logical, reasonable, and prescient:

Lou Figueroa

Lou,

I hope you know how much it pains me to agree with the Duck but DD hated Fats. I have e-mails and PM's from Freddy B. explaining why he refused to bring up the topic of Fats to DD because he liked them both and figured "why rile up DD". I do not have personal knowledge of DD saying anything hateful though.

Let there be no mistake, DD hated Fats and could not stand that he got all the pub while much better players got none.

PS. If it hadn't been for Fats being the clown to Mosconi's "straight man" (on T.V.) then I'd guess that Mosconi would not have been known to a generation of players. I didn't see Mosconi putting on an Easter Seals benefit with Cornbread, I saw Fats doing it. When the Wide World of Sports had them on we had 15 guys watching a small T.V. behind the counter and laughing their asses off when Fats ridiculed Mosconi.

I put forth the premise that Fats was actually promoting Mosconi and pool and he knew it. I agree with Rod.

I was actually there for that Easter Seals do....every time Fats opened his mouth...
...Cornbread was grinning from ear to ear.

...and George Middleditch did his 'three plus three' shot....
...first time to an audience of that size.
...it got him a gig...on the road doing exhibitions with his own table in tow.

Yeah, Fats brought our game to the attention of the general public...
....who else would these guys do a song about?

Well, Cowboy, you obviously have access to info I do not. All I have is what DD said publicly.

As to the rest, if you've read R.A Dyer's most excellent "The Hustler & The Champ" which chronicles the whole genesis and denouement of the Fats Mosconi feud, it's clear that it was good for both men and for pool. So with that I'd have to agree.

Lou Figueroa

Players were still playing a lot of pushout at that time. I think TV just told them to try for everything. Johnnyt

Lou...One slight correction. Mosconi's "disdain" for pool did not come from it being "so easy for him". It came from after winning a cash prize of $75, during the depression, his father MADE him go to work, playing pool as a job. That was literally why he hated pool. There was no enjoyment for him.

Scott Lee
http://poolknowledge.com

He actually had something resembling distain for the game because it just came so easy to him.

Lou Figueroa

Rod...Both Fats and Mosconi were born in 1913.

I've just read the thread, My 2cents
.
Fat was the greatest thing to happen to pool, a true ambassador, that rekindled interest in the game after the movie.
He was a gracious, generous person. I enjoyed immensely my time around him.
No funnier human ever lived.

As to all the people wanting to play him, most pulled back a nub. As a young man from NY, he was known as Triple Smart Fat. Yes he was a hustler, one of the best. Not sure anyone knew his correct age, In Houston in 1964 he beat both U.J.Puckett and Johnny "Cannonball" Chapman playing even one pocket. Names some here probably don't recall.

I believe most of the haters didn't know him, just didn't like what they saw on TV .
