What is that?

A few years ago Earl gave me a set of new 'finger slides' he had in his case; said they were a great product to use when not using a glove. said he gets them at CVS.

Looks like he graduated to the offensive linemen models as Franko suggested. ;)

It's so amazing to me how good he can still shoot no matter what gadgetry he's using.

best,
brian kc <--- I think I still have those fingerslides in my case.

Actually, there might be a very good reason for these finger extensions. With longer fingers, on a jump shot, you have more distance to provide more aim & more power to the stroke. I designed a great jump shot bridge, to get the extra length needed for a jump shot. Works GREAT.....

It looks like metal finger splints all taped up. He may have arthritis in his fingers and is trying something to keep the fingers from flexing and causing pain, or he could be crazy, or both.

Even though we've shared an elevator ride or two and exchanged brief pleasantries, I've never asked Earl about the accouterments he uses.

BUT I'm willing to guess that -- despite all the ridicule here --- Earl is trying to make his set up a hair more precise with the wraps. Moving the cue and his alignment a hair thisaway or a scousch thataway. IMO, that's what's going on.

Lou;

I agree entirely.

The vast majority (me included) shake our heads, even laugh a little when we see all of these bizarre gadgets along with his javelin of a cue, etc etc but there's no doubt in my mind that they all have a specific and good purpose.

He can wear a complete Planet of the Apes costume with the head on backwards and still shoot my liver out so I'm always sure never to laugh too hard.

It was difficult though, I admit, that one challenge match when Earl was playing Shane on the 10 footer and the baby was crying in the audience and so Earl returned the next day wearing airline baggage handlers' earmuffs in order to erase any edge Shane may have had with being able to turn off his hearing aids.

Again, a specific good purpose!

He does look pretty weird, but he did play pretty good.
And I like his fast pace.

I got a close look at these Friday when he wore them looked to be roll gauze with black tape and then silk medical tape. Other fingers had medical paper tape. They were pretty fat, over an inch in diameter. I saw him miss at least 8 easy balls versus Pomainville.

Sunday when he had Shaw 6 to 3 Jayson jumped in a ball and got it 6 to 4. From then on Earl griped:
Phenolic should be banned
Nobody here wants me to win
I'm too old
He's gonna beat me with rolls

Over the next several games he made several poorly thought out shots and gave Shaw the set. He has no chance when he goes that negative.

That's Earl Stricland.
He lost his mind a few years/decades back and started relying
on stuff like that instead of hard work and his own talent.

So when a game didn't go well it was either the audience or some
of his equipment that did it.
Add another wrap next time and if he won then that became the
magic number. 9x around each finger works better than 10 or 8....

Think all that stuff is weird, play some golf with him. When he's hitting a drive on a par 4 or 5,,with his driver, he looks like he's going to fall so forward and is so off balance , that he couldn't possibly move the ball more than a hundred yards,,but you stuck wondering when it lands 275 out, how the hell he did that.

Oftentimes, genius is misconstrued as crazy. :)

This is actually very true. Jonathan Winters was a genius and had to pay several trips to a mental health facility to cope with his mental demons. It's a blessing and a curse.

On another note, they say dumb dogs make the best dogs because they're always happy and content. Smart dogs, dogs with higher IQs, need to be mentally stimulated more often and need much more attention.
