Table-Buying Dilemma

Thanks guys. I am in the process of buying the $1500 Gold Crown II. It's about a half hour away, and I'm going to look at it tomorrow.

Thanks, everyone. This table is definitely a consideration! But I also just got a lead on a Gold Crown II for $500 more with a ball return, which is sort of a necessity being strictly a straight pool player. It also happens to have brand new 860 HR on it. Even if both of these tables fall through, I'm excited to see that these deals are out there. So thanks so much for your help, and I'm so glad the Gandy Big G deal fell through at this point!

Just a suggestion... Set your table up to be as similar as the ones you compete on.... Atemis cushions & fancy cloth won't do well for you.

Good Luck

Any idea what rubber this is? The seller doesn't recall what brand he used.

Keep looking for a nice gold crown , they are out there for 1000 dollars and a couple hundred to go get it and 800 for the rails and cloth and setup is reasonable.
I got so tired of people wanting stupid money to put cloth on that I did it myself.
No experience except what I got here. That will save you 300 to 500.
It plays perfect and looks as good or better than 95% of all tables I have seen done , because I took my time and cared .
The hardest part is getting the table level , I moved the slates around for about 20 hours before I started understanding how it works.
I went the Gandy Big G way when I first bought my house, it was a beautiful table but it didn't play like a GC even with new rails and simonis cloth.
It caught laundry for 20 years .
I played more on my new GC in 3 months than in 20 years of the Gandy.

A beautiful GC3 just came on OBM last night with new 860 blue on it. In Texas but maybe between borrowing a truck and making a deal with guy u might have $2k in it And it did look NICE from pics. Gl

What is OBM and what city in tx?

Good work ceebee! The magic of AZB. You may have made this a special Thanksgiving for the OP.

That table looks beautiful and what a price (and even negotiable, yet!). Should be a done deal soon as the OP gets to "Bob"'s place and looks it over. ( I'm guessing his wheels are on the highway heading north as we speak.)

I just noticed that it's been listed for 27 days.

Wonder why no one has snapped it up (given its unusually great appearance and price)? Hmmmm.

Could be that folks didn't look any further than their nose. Finding this craigslist would have taken some time, but using Search Tempest shortens your search time.

Good Luck...

I'm just trying to keep under my budget of $2000. I'm not saying I'm broke. If I buy a $950 table, have it transported for $675, that leaves me some money to buy a stupid ball return. I can't imagine playing straight pool and not having a ball return.

I have ball return on a gc4 and it is pretty noisy. Sometimes I wish it was drop pocket.

Not worth the conver$ion, IMO.

Bought One Today

So I bought a Gold Crown today. Thank you everyone for convincing me to wait for a deal on one and avoid the Gandys. I obviously didn't wait long!

I picked up everything but the slates, 2 long aprons, and 2 long frame pieces. In the next couple of weeks I'll arrange for a table installer to pick up the remaining items and set it up in my house. The seller says it's a Gold Crown II, but I've seen some confusing threads on here about the differences between I and II. This has rotating leg levelers. Maybe someone can tell by the pics I'm posting here. I have several more, but I figured I wouldn't overwhelm the thread.

Nice brand new Simonis 860 HR felt already on the lengthened and possibly Diamondized(?) rails. And the 860 HR bed cloth is new in a box and ready to be installed. The rails don't have many nicks or scratches. very nice, actually.

The seller stripped the ball box and foot aprons of most of the paint because he was planning on repainting, so I'll have to do something about that.

Ball return looks in very nice shape. New pockets. The chrome pieces and white pedestals aren't gorgeous but not terrible.

Functionally, everything looks to be in very nice condition. The slates were shipped vertically across country and nicely crated. I had to rip open the cardboard to inspect the slate. All looks very nice.

Congrats! Looks like it's going to ve a sweet table.

How tight of pockets for straight pool?

Who did the rail work? Do you have any pictures with the cloth off the cushion?

I did the rail work Pat. I extended the sub rails and replaced the monarch rubber with k55. I know there's been a ton of discussion in the mechanic section about the results of doing this without changing the bevel angle and I've read all the talk about it prior to deciding to do it that way. The rubber does have the correct nose height of about 1 7/16". I used 3/16 facings. I'm not exactly sure what the final size will be but they started at 4 3/4 at the corners. I think 4 3/8 is about right but we'll see when it's finally set up. The table traveled from here in the pacific northwest to jersey. Long story.

Thanks for posting, JC. I'm looking forward to putting your work to the test. I'm sure it'll be great. If they're the proper nose height and new rubber, and they were glued on properly, how can they be bad, right?

Sweet bro, congrats! I like the GC 2's at least as much if not more than the 3's!

Thanks! Actually, according to Pat it's a late GC I.

Sorry about that if it's a 1. I thought it was a 2 due to the hardware config. It does have the captive rail hold down nuts instead of the figure 8 plates and adjustable feet. So it must be pretty late in the run of 1s.
