Now that Alton has retired, who's the best guy to go to for custom JP's?

I got a Black Boar on the way so want to order some to go with it.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Jim Baxter
The best jp's
Great price and quality
And a pleasure to deal with

Not sure Jim Baxter would go as fancy as you seem to want. That said, I am sure he'd be honest about what he would do. Here's the JPs he made for my Josey...a perfect match.

JPs

I agree Jim does a great job and is fairly priced.

Try looking at Steve Kornele's website. He has some very nice ones and I'v bought from him also; a pleasure to deal with

Happy New Year all

I don't want to take anything away from Jim's workmanship since he produces some really nice sets.
Having said that, he's basically playing in single A baseball whereas Alton was playing in the MLB.

As long as you adjust your design expectations from anything Alton would have produced for your cue,
then Jim will produce a very nice protector set for your cue. But make no mistake, Alton was in a class
by himself which is why his protector sets are on fancy design top end cues and cost so much too.

So no one has really replaced him in this regard as the out and out best maker? I've seen Jim's stuff and agree it's great for the price but I looking for the best maker where price is not a part of the calculation.

Thanks guys

Cam customs

Chad McLennan started-out making JP's and he still makes custom's to order. I believe he can make anything you want.

IMHO The first priority is to try to get them from the maker. Some don't like to make them, but that is the first place to ask especially if you are having the cue made IMHO. Original protectors by the maker himself are a great thing IMHO.

Next, if the maker does not want to, they might supply the matching ring material (if you have fancy rings) to a reputable maker (Like Baxter) to make protectors. Can't hurt to ask.

Baxter is a great option from all I know, and perhaps especially if materials are supplied from the cue maker to make it easier to match.

I don't think anybody is stepping up to do what Alton did.

I spoke to Baxter about getting a set made and never pulled the trigger. He was really very nice. In addition, I wanted some special things inlaid in the end and he would put them in if I supplied them so it seems he is open to using supplied materials to achieve a design.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

If I were getting a BB made, I would certainly ask if it could come with matching joint caps.

Lastly, I hope to see you show off the cue here when you get it!:thumbup::thumbup:

Your disclaimer at the start did nothing to subdue the stench that followed.

There was no need to repeat what was already stated and you would have been a better man by not rpeating what was said earlier, in a more caustic manner.

Rule for grownups; on does not speak poorly of one thing to make another look better than it is.

You also would have been a better man by just saying alton was in a class alone,

Sometimes You Get Lucky.....I Did.

I wanted a unique design for a set of protectors for a cue I had made last May.
There wasn't anyone around that would tackle this for me and so I asked my
cue-maker if he would create a set of protectors for me. My first choice was to
ask Alton but since that wasn't an option, I kept my fingers crossed and hoped.

Well, with some reluctance, Bob acquiesced and agreed to create something for
the cue he was making me. I am so happy he was my cue-maker for so many
reasons and he went out of his way to build me protectors with matching Ivory &
Pau Lau Rings ( 32 Inlays per Ring).

There's 4 rings on my pool cue, 2 rings on the shafts, and 3 rings on the protector set.
That's a lot of painstaking, detailed cue-building and Bob did me a tremendous favor
by agreeing to make the set. I didn't ask for matching rings and asked Bob to use his
own judgement making the design........Needless to say, he did not disappoint me.

Wow, they look great

I was amazed.......he pressure infused the wood, scallop cut the ebony rings in the tops,
and cut & hand trimmed so much more Paul Lau & Ivory just to make this protector set.

Bob could have just thrown in some same color rings as my veneers and a couple of dots
or diamonds and I probably would have been thrilled. Instead, he takes my cue project on
as a labor of love and literally blows me away with the pool cue itself and the protectors...Wow!

He is a very talented cue-maker as evidenced by some of the cues posted in the Cue Gallery.
I'm here to tell everyone that Bob is just a great person, a wonderful man, and I'm his biggest fan.

I think his last name was Owen or something like that.

Hold on a second, if you don't mind waiting just a bit.

OK, I'm back. I just checked my Forum signature and
sure enough, his last name was Owen as I suspected.

I do not believe anyone will ever replace Alton , he was the best , a true artist .

I do a lot simpler j/ps . There is a ling below in my signature to my J/p photo bucket . Over 2500 pictures to look over whats come out of my shop .

Here is a couple I did for BB , no ringwork on these . At time I do ask if cue maker can supply the ring to match his cues , works out nice .

Been doing J/ps for over 20 years , and right now almost a month waiting list .
