The U.S can't win world titles out of the U.S in 8,9,and 10 ball. All the top U.S players are playing one pocket. I guess they have to play it because that's where most of the action is now. Johnnyt

Wow, that's deep. As far as rotation games two words sum it up: BAR BOX. Almost all U.S. tournaments are on the bar-table. That's why CSI is moving their championships back to 9ft'rs. You can't spend all your time in the kiddie pool and expect to win in a Olympic-size pool.

Well said. I always had thought real pool was shot on 9 footers. Since returning to the game I've been taken back by the widespread use of 7 footers. I'm currently in a Valley league and people are surprised I never really played on them.

Not really..,

None of the top players spend all their time on Bar Box Tables. They all gamble on the 9' tables and spend all the practice time on 9' tables, so have a couple of events on the big tables is not going to help any American player win anything.

There are lots of factors that prevent American players from winning, but the table size is not one of them.

Theres a reason the Action is there...,

One Pocket is the one game where your shooting is not the big factor in your ability to win. Sure the top guys all shoot straight, but the game favors the thinker, the mover, the banker and guy who can wait until the time is right to be aggressive.

If your hustling, Its the best way to protect your Money.

It may not be the biggest reason but it IS a factor. All the European and Asian events are played on 9ft. tables. That's ALL these players know. In the U.S. there's about 7 events a year the top players enter that are on big tables. Say a guy plays a barbox event and then flies overseas to a big table tournament. Even with a day of practice he's still at a disadvantage to full-time big table players.

What is being overlooked is gambling has killed pro level pool.
I gotta hear this. How? Top players have been gambling since pool started. In its so-called heydays(30's-60's) they weren't any tournaments that paid worth anything. Players then and now can't live off tournament winnings unless maybe they are in the top3-5 in the world. You don't think the Euro & Asian players aren't matching-up for the cash? Believe me they do, a lot. Lack of any major sponsorship(or t.v.) is what keeps pool where it is.

But the lack of action, excitement, and entertainment value has killed pool, thanks to the pool purists who enjoy watching robotic tournament soldiers playing mum pool. Therein lies the problem why pool is circling the drain in America. In sum, pool needs more gambling, not less.

BAM! Score!!! Couldn't agree more.

Or........maybe they've been losing because they haven't been playing enough one pocket....

How about that?

Your thesis is void of any substance.

If anything exploring and broadening ones horizon will typically strengthen any player in any sport.

Would you say if a basket ball player started competing in 5k runs, that he would then become
less of a basketball player?

A country of 320 million people, facing off against every other country in the world totaling over 7 billion people. That gives a 95% edge to the world as far as talent pool.

I know for me after the first couple rooms I worked in/ played out of had almost no serious one pocket players paired with the old one pocket will hurt ur stroke theory and I had never got into it. Then after moving onto the current room I play out of(drexeline) one pocket is basically the only game for the regulars so I basically decided to pick it up to get more action. Best thing I ever did cuz I love the game and wish I had never listened to that bs theory that one pocket is bad because it's helping aspects of my rotation games and bank pool not to mention that it's a great gambling game because u have more impact on the outcome and can control way more than way 9 ball while ur getting a package run on u. The moral is I started to play one pocket because it's where the money is and since it became my favorite game.

No, No, No, not even a factor!

So how do you explain the Philippines domination for 30 years? Why doesn't Mexico have more to notch players? Where are all the players from India or Japan?

This is pure speculation, but it seems to me the Asians/Europeans are more dedicated to the sport, spending hours upon hours in training/testing as opposed to American players that spend a lot of time on golf courses and such.

It is quite apparent that the Asians and Euros have much better control of their composure....almost robotic at times. If you don't think this is why they excel then you're kidding yourself, imo.

Three words: Focus, focus, focus.

This weekend's match is a great example why the US can't win international events. Scott Frost was clearly the more advanced one pocket player but got his arse kicked by a guy who just plain works harder. Trains harder, plays harder and gets better results. Let's face it, Americans have it easy and are soft. And we get what we had over the weekend.

Not a question of if but when. Look at all the players from China and S. Korea coming out...

But really, in many countries Soccer is king. In India, I'd bet snooker is more prevalent.

Good point.

The Asians start playing pool at a very early age, and I mean a LOT of youngsters. Our youngsters are playing Pee Wee football and Little League. They grow up with names like Parica, Reyes, and Bustamante as their national heroes. American kids are following Lebron James, Tom Brady, and the likes. Our young people lock their selves away in their bedrooms with a joystick in their hands while the young Asian lads are in a pool room or in a practice regimen with a trainer.

The Euros just seem to have ice water in their veins.

Just some random thoughts off the top of my head.
