Efren..........................

Good post.
I really appreciated that Efren was so happy for the 11 year old young man running some balls. The sport/game will be sorry to see him moving out of the regular play and into a more selective role.
(may go back and do a translate of his quotes when I have more time)

"Kapag wala na talaga, magre-retire na ako. Ngayon nga gusto ko na mag-retire,"
"When it's gone, I will retire. Now I want to retire,"

"Wala na akong tatalunin ngayon. Sa tournament wala na akong tatalunin, 'saka magastos lumakad."
"I do not have to beat anymore. In the tournament I'm not going to beat anymore, 'it's more expensive to walk."

"Ang premyo ng 3rd place $5,000, ibig sabihin break-even ka. Paano kung hindi ka 3rd place? Lugi ka," Reyes said
The 3rd place prize is $ 5,000, which means break-even. What if you're not the 3rd place? You're losing," Reyes said.

"Nagsimula nang mauso ang 10-ball. Pumasok na iyong mga break, mga jump cue,"
"10-ball starts to jerk. Enter your breaks, jump cues,"

"Ang daming magagaling na shooter ngayon. Minsan hindi na kailangan mag-isip, kasi magaling ang break nila."
"There are a lot of great shooter today. Sometimes it's not necessary to think, because they break well."

"Medyo may takot pa sila, akala nila magaling pa ako," Reyes said. "May partida na nga ako sa kanila. Marami nang magaling ngayon. Ako na pinapatok ng mga kalaban."
"They're a little bit frightened, they think I'm better," Reyes said. "I have a part in them now, and I'm so good now."

Efren teaches the world how to play the right way. It's time the world give something back. Like a statue with inscription "The best pool player that ever lived"? Maybe in his hometown he will have one soon.

GOAT

I hope he never HAS to retire and gets to play the game he loves wherever and whenever he wants until the day he dies.

Really? Seventy percent of that article was written in English with quotes in another language. It literally made no sense. Maybe American sports writers should just write the quotes of Latin baseball players in Spanish. I'm sure no one would have any problem with that.

Probably in the Manila Bulletin, an English language newspaper that frequently intersperses Tagalog with the English. Why, I don't know. The Philippine Star is my favorite paper, all in English for us Westerners.
P.S. Efren spends most of his free time in Angeles City (where he lives) hanging out at a local pool hall playing chess!
P.P.S. As for me I have a home here in Los Angeles and one there in Angeles City. Kind of fitting somehow. Last time I was there I played pool exactly once. I played on Daryl Nordquist's team in a local bar league when he asked me to sub. I went 2-2 and was in pain on most every shot. I told Daryl I couldn't do it again.

Here's my translation:

"Kapag wala na talaga, magre-retire na ako. Ngayon nga gusto ko na mag-retire,"

"When it's really gone, I will retire. Just right now (as we speak) I already want to retire,"

"Wala na akong tatalunin ngayon. Sa tournament wala na akong tatalunin, 'saka magastos lumakad."
"Today I wont be beating anyone anymore. In tournaments i wont be beating anyone anymore; and it's expensive to travel."

"Ang premyo ng 3rd place $5,000, ibig sabihin break-even ka. Paano kung hindi ka 3rd place? Lugi ka," Reyes said
"The prize for 3rd place prize is $ 5,000, which means you break-even. What if dont get to 3rd place? Then you lose money," Reyes said.

"Nagsimula nang mauso ang 10-ball. Pumasok na iyong mga break, mga jump cue,"
"When 10-ball started to become popular, the break shot became more focused on, and jump cues..."

"Ang daming magagaling na shooter ngayon. Minsan hindi na kailangan mag-isip, kasi magaling ang break nila."
"There are a lot of good players today. Sometimes they dont have to think, because their break is good."

"Medyo may takot pa sila, akala nila magaling pa ako," Reyes said. "May partida na nga ako sa kanila. Marami nang magaling ngayon. Ako na pinapatok ng mga kalaban."
"They're a little bit scared, they think Im still that good" Reyes said. "I now get handicap from them. There are a lot of good players today. Im the one 'being shot at' by opponents."

you should know that it is intended for FILIPINO readers who speak BOTH English and Filipino. the medium of the entire article is in English, but you write the interviewee's words in verbatim. you "quote" it.

Here's my translation:

"...

"When 10-ball started to become popular, the break shot became more focused on, and jump cues..."

Thank you. I don't speak the language, so I had to rely on the computer - which often loses details / nuances of particular languages. I guessed at a few things myself - but just posted directly (cut and paste) what the software said.

(edit: There seemed to be a few folks getting upset over something I didn't think was a big enough deal to get ones panties in a bunch; so I gave it a shot)

What kind of article is this? Are we supposed to know to read and understand Filipino? There is no translation of what he's saying....

You're lucky it wasn't written all in Tagalog.
It is a Filipino Newspaper after all.
The Philipines have Both English and Tagalog as Official Languages.

***Nicely ask one of the Pinoys here on AzB to translate the quotes from Reyes.***
I would help you but I'm a Kano.

Right. I originally thought it was a prank when I saw the quotes in Filipino.

Amazing how a news site for a certain population has the language of that population in it.

It's call Taglish.
Both English and Tagalog are Official Languages.
Read the previous posts, please.

Efren is playing righ now as I speak. 10-ball no handicap against a local pro in Calasiao, Pangasinan (around 6 hrs from Manila), for $3000+. :)

UPDATE: Efren won his money match yesterday. 25-16.

Let's not write Efren off just yet. After all, he already beat Shane and Thorpe this year already, among others.
He may have decided that it's not financially sustainable for him to keep dropping to US every so often, but make no mistake - the master can still play.

But, he needs to keep up the money making for his extended family, age waits on no one. Pasalubong.

Ya he probably just wants to cut down on travel...tournament pool doesn't pay out what it used to for him...US open today is what $13000? It used to be $50,000. Might as well stay in the Philippines and get some action.

It was always fun to watch Efren play
He was the only player I even cared about

He seems like such a grentle man, good sport and so talented

Now I watch ronnie o sullivan p[lay snooker,a game I played maybe twice and apart from
watching Ronnie play,I would have to say there is nothing in pool that
i care about seeing

Efren will be missed,he is a decade younger than I am and he looks so old

I hope to get to see him play at least one more time
