Skids During Practice

How do you guys handle the dreaded skid/kick when you are practicing? If you are just working on one particular shot and you get a skid its not a big deal. But what happens if you break a rack and a skid costs you a runout? Do you reshoot the shot? Do you just pretend like you made it?

How do you guys handle skids at home, the pool hall, etc, when you are working on running out, say in a game of 9-Ball?

You hope you learn and remember and don't shoot that shot like that in the future, at least not when it means something.

If the skid cost me a runout it cost me a runout because I hit it wrong. No mulligans in pool.

If I'm practicing, and miss a shot, I shoot it until I'm not missing it anymore. If you are practicing running out, would assume you are playing the ghost, and in that case the ghost won and rack them up again.

Agree with black balled. Skids usually happen on very specific shots. Remember the shot so you know for next time.

Hell, I've even intentionally played a skid before.

Most of the time I re-shoot my misses multiple times at home, regardless of what caused them.

I dont think the cause of a skid has ever factually be discovered, just something that happens and you have to deal with. When they happen in practice, I dont really care so much. They really suck ass when it happens when it matters, especially because most of the time it occurs on a slower rolled shot and when you miss the ball just sits in a good spot for your opponent.

Normally when I play the ghost, I give the win to him on the miss but I will shoot the rest of the rack out anyway... provided my frustration level isnt through the roof.

I think that is the easy way out. You must be punished for your miss. Rake em and rack em!

Yeah, but as practice its a bit counter productive right? Im not exactly working on anything, im just losing.

Not counter productive, imo.

To keep shooting is a bit like your mom threatening you but not following through, you know?

Sometimes I will play Casper a race to 3, if I lose, session is over...but maybe just for 30 min or so.

But that is home table approach.

I was on a 41 ball run playing 14.1 last week (the highest to date on my new table) when I played my key ball like a jackoff and she skidded. For a millisecond the thought crossed my mind to keep shooting. I came to my senses and started over, then I put out my cigarette in my arm for even considering it.

Yeah I hear you... I think Id just be pissed off and not go back to the table...

accept it and move on

skids are one of the few things you really can't control for, aside from cleaning the cb after every single stroke (which just isn't feasible)

Why can't they be controlled?

As alluded to in this thread, there is a specific set of conditions that skids occur under.

While we might not be aware of all the conditions, eliminating one or more of those we can control eliminates the skid.

You don't have to be at the pool Gods' mercy on every shot.

I normally hate your guts, but I agree with you on this. There are certainly shots that skid more than others, and ways to control them. I still hate you.

Well, don't just hem and haw. List em.

I thought I was clear in that I (we) have beliefs re: what they are and we are aware o what appear to be contributing factors, but we don't know the total truth.

As you mention, dirty balls appear to be one cause. Id add speed, + cut angle are 2 more.

I also think a cause is the cb going from slide to roll, as it touches the ob, Mr . Riddick.
