The comment came up when I was getting a friend and apa team mate on my usapl team . This friend had played on an apa team with the usapl lo and I for a month before he dropped out for personal reasons. And now is back on my apa team and wants to play usapl with me also.

Naturally what he should start at comes up. The lo says 515. I say what ? He aint as good as me and you started me at 460. Then I remind the lo that we are both apa 5/6 and he was aware that my friend and I played 3 sets of race to 7 call pocket 8 ball ..9 ball and then 10 ball. I won 7-5...7-4..7-4.

The lo replied my friend has a hair better offence and I am better on defense and that's why I will win 90% of the time . He agreed to start him at 500. When I balked at that the lo commented he probly started me too low and was sticking with 500 for my friend.

So I am a lil puzzled by his comments and think he is making an assumption based on seeing my friend play a total of half a dozen matches and watching me play for years.

Dang....i should make.sure my first cup of coffee kicks in before I post.. He more or less admitted he started me.too low so I guess this thread should go no where.

After about 4 weeks now I am.now a 491. Due to playing sub 400's the first couple weeks my rating was going nowhere. Last 2 weeks I beat a 471 and a 500 and then shot up ..

Really dont know what a 491 is in usapl bit if my captain quits playing me again 325's and 250's and matches me up like he did the last 2 weeks I am sure I will continue to climb

Soo do you want us to rough him up a little?
:
Well that's a thought :grin-square:

Seriously ....it bugged me that he started a player higher than me who I feel is not as good as me.. I would think that winning 3 races to 7 by a score of 21-14 would prove point. Also.looking out for the team limit :grin-square:

It's because pool sucks, and so do pool player's attitudes

Well as for my attitude .....not trying to be egotistical at all ....some players hide behind their handicaps but I dont. I do try to be the bed I can be and if he thinks my friend should be a 500 ....well I should be higher.. And I will get there .

You will get there Pal... and your friend may slip a bit too. So don't sweat it. I know you want to be good. You want to be competitive against everyone.

Don't let one mans opinion on your game get you down. Stay positive and let your stick do the talking, like Efren!

Lo, I have read many of your posts on here regarding league play. Seems you are always beating the other teams 6s&7s, why are you not like a 11? You commented on players from other areas coming there and getting beat by lesser (#) players, maybe everybody there should be at least a 10.
Just having my first cup of coffee so these reflections may be due to a dirty/distorted mirror:rolleyes:

If you're a 5/6 then I would say you are rated about right. New players are almost always rated high and then they adjust to avoid someone coming in too low and robbing people.

Run the LO across the river and you take over!

Like you ....I was on my first cup.of coffee when I started this thread. In retrospect o should have titled this thread.....complaining about my starter rating being top low.

Yea o am guilty of posting my results in the league thread. I post almost all results but like others I skip a week or 2 now and then. Yea I have beat 6's and 7's ...also an 8 or 9 every once in a while. And I have also posted in the same thread about losing to 3's and 4's on occasion and even a 2 a couple of times. With that said I hope you are not implying that I post on this forum bragging about all the 6's and 7's I have won against.

And yes I did post about most players who move here from other areas are not competitive with players from here at the same skill level. Notice i said most. There have been a few exceptions. I guess you missed my post on that same subject where I looked up their lifetime stats and saw that most were once a week players. Most local players....such as I play 3-4 even 5 nights a week. right there was the reason that most could not compete . A 5 that plays 4 nights a week is gonna be stronger than a 5 that plays once a week.

One more thing about beating 6's and 7's. I fluctuate between a 5 and 6 so I am very capable of playing 6 speed. I have also been told by my lo....during higher level tournaments that my level of play has approached 7 territory on occasion.

So what does that mean ? That means that a guy who is capable of playing a 6 even but is getting spotted 8 balls is should win. It also means that a 5 who has approached s/l 7 territory facing a 7 who is spotting him 17 balls is capable of winning that match also.

On the flip side. Just as i am prone to playing u to my opponent I am also prone to playing down to my opponent. Being a 5 playing a 3 and you wind up playing like a 3 and you are spotting them 13 balls you will definitely lose.

There is a simple remedy for this that I stumbled upon about ten years ago.

There was a physically handicapped dude who played apa as a weak 3, and played a few non-handicapped tourneys. First time I met him, I had a lot of respect for him and appreciated that he played with almost no chance of ever winning a match.

So I crushed him every time I played against him. I was nice, friendly, and respectful about it, but I made no bones about playing my absolute best against him. I figured that he knew what he was in for and it was a sign of me respecting him to not lay down.

And, one week, he beat me in a race-to-two. He told me months later that it was his proudest moment playing pool because he knew I had tried my hardest.

I now find it very easy to play my level against any player. If they are willing to get in the same box as me, I will be nice and friendly, but I won't be less than I can be at that moment.

USAPL a CueSports International league, and CSI has adopted Fargo ratings for all their events. There are plenty of threads in the forum on Fargo ratings, and you can always read up on their website.

According to this USAPL Race calculator, if you play a 250, he/she has to go to 24 and you as a 491 have to make 52. Or 31/67 in a longer race.

High 400s is a C+. You are probably running out 4-5 balls with ball in hand on an open table in 9 ball.

I am actually thinking of going away from USAPL due to the points scoring, it really puts the advantage to the lower level player, especially with a win being 14 pts. vs APA where sinking the game ball is only 2 points. I have beaten people 5-2 in games and lost the match due to points in USAPL. All you need to do is miss ONE game ball and the lower level player is on the hill LOL

TAP may be the way to go, they only handicap with games not points.

USAPL is geared more for lower rated players. It is similar to APA as to the cap on points per team.
I don't know all the details but this is what I've been told by their League Operator.

The best way to deal with succeeding at a game is to *play that game*. Don't get so stuck on "real" rules, or the real score. Those describe only your preferences, or what you're used to. For example "beating people 5-2 in games"....why even notice that? Who cares? It isn't the game you are playing. You didn't beat them in games because that isn't the way that game is played or scored. When I first came to APA 9 ball, I started as a 7. I was playing lots of tournament 9 ball at the time. It was a difficult transition at first. However, it taught me about the weaknesses in my game, most notably at the time my lack of control on the break. Scratching on the break is a death sentence in APA 9 ball playing a low ranked player. Not such a big deal though playing a low player by the game. Point is, different games are different games, and requiring some sort of reference to a "real" game is likely to lead to disappointment. In my opinion having played tons of leagues and also tournaments.
