Well, it may not be the strangest, but if you'd spent five minutes with my friend Leon you'd see why it's noteworthy.
Living in Perth, Australia I was almost getting by on my game at the time.
Though a couple days a week I'd have a session with Leon as my opponent.
An ex-pro, months previous he was spotting me 8 in a race to 9, but I'd learned & lifted my game to the stage we'd haggle furiously over a 1 spot, which also often pushed up the $ staked.
This day I was playing well, having won 2 races from a 1 spot, both by a few racks & pocketing $200/race.
My friend, somewhat frustrated, pushes me to play 'double or nothing'. I'm not so keen, knowing he has a couple extra gears he can change up to when he's truly up against it.
I had, however, fallen in love with the Limited Ed 1/50 P2 cue he'd brought to show off & said he'd thrash me with. Very alike to the 10th Anniversary LE model, but with Implex joint & butt cap, & a 30" shaft.
So crazily I offered to play a final race with him putting up the P2 as a prize.
Begin the next haggle - how much is it worth, that I need to put up against it??
We settled on AU700.
Then we haggled over him spotting me a frame in this race! It was epic stuff.
Having won the last 2 races off 1 spot, he didn't want to spot me at all in this match! Cheeky fellow. I countered with a reduction in the $$ I stake for the loss of the 1 frame advantage. He wouldn't hear of it! So I offered an extra $100 for him to spot me 2 frames - we hadn't played a 2 spot race in weeks!
I risked him taking this offer, likely to spur his game up a gear that would have me chasing my tail all match or worse, sitting on it!
Eventually we settled at $700, with no spot, but I have the break in each frame.
We're playing 9-ball.
First break 3 balls pocketed & a shot on the 2 ball. An ugly roadmap, but I run the rack.
2nd break GOLDEN!
3rd break a lonely ball drops & leaves me hooked. Push-out or kick at it? I push into space, leaving the 1 ball open but blocked for a path to a pocket.
I'm forced to kick out of a cruel safety, part luck/part willpower sees the 1 struck & the CB caroms off to pocket the 5. Hooked on the 1 again!
No more magic for the rest of this frame or the next, evening the score.
5th break GOLDEN from an 'out of the blue' kick.
6th break, 2 balls down & rack wide open. Win, score 4-2 my favor.
We trade wins the next 4 racks, score 6-4...
11th break a shocking 5 balls down! The slightest edge on the 6, with the 9 wired to the pocket against it.
7-4.
12th break is a shameful flipside of the coin to the previous. Dry, only saving grace is the 9, 8 & 6 balls all frozen together in no-mans-land.
That dreaded next gear is found, with a carom shot breaking them open magically. 7-5.
My friend hates that he's given away the break.
13th break #1 pocketed, leaving #2 open & a sneaky carom off #3 to pocket the 9.
PHEW!
8-5.
On the hill against a Sth Londoner, staking a US1200 cue against my AU700.... and I have the break.
I wish it was Golden. What a way that would be to end the story!
But no, 14th break loss.
8-6.
Seeing the quality of play step up rapidly. It's how you wish you could play. Smooth, fast rhythm, 'two-stroking' every shot.
8-7.
Oh no! He's caught up!!!
My game gets a tad wobbly, & I find myself in the spiral where each tough shot made breeds the next tough shot.
I play out 1 through 7, but flop the 8, luckily leaving it on the long rail with the CB hanging in the opposite corner pocket.
My opponent, my good friend, bears down on the shot like he's looking at a trophy head through a rifle scope. Catches the edge of the pocket & narrowly misses the 8 - Scratch!
Oh my I got lucky there.
And won.
P2LE 1/50 is mine!!!
