Chen Siming vs Donny Mills

Then pool needs to die.
Jason

On the entertainment side there is a content war going on. Pool is not an " event " sport. The content wars are brutal darwinian realties.

For us folks that are aficionados we will watch pool matches. But think about it. Any game or sport has to survive against other content and folks that never played football watch football, Basket Ball etc.

How many folks that don't play pool watch pool? The highest paid woman in pool was never the top player. The Black Widow made it on sex appeal.

The major audience for games and sports is men. There is only one way to make the game compelling and that is to make the purses really big: and who is gonna shell out that kind of cash?

We need 1 million dollars for the US open top prize and then you would have to do that for a while and promote it. Big money creates buzz.

Then the folks that win that prize money must be made into stars. One of the biggest obstacles is the players themselves. Working with pool players is like herding cats.

One other thing I noticed in watching the Women's final of the 2017 China Open. They had good crowds watching! I'm beginning to understand now, the women players over there are more popular than the men. How about that for a gender bender! I remember years ago when Jeannie was beating up on some pretty good players (Buddy, Keith, Lebron etc.) and drawing big crowds to watch her play. Some of the men couldn't handle it and got very pissed off, saying they should be allowed to play in the women's events if Jean could play in theirs. Some guys actually withdrew rather than take a chance on drawing her. I thought it was very funny at the time.

I spoke to this in a thread a couple of weeks ago , I was there and heard them whining , I still can see their poor pitiful faces all scrunched up at the thought of losing to her. Mostly the guys under the top 20 or 30 , but on a given day , she might beat anybody alive in a tournament race.

When did I become a Chen Siming fan boy?

I was vaguely aware of her last year. When Rhea posted that she'd hit 790 I watched one of her matches against Jasmine and found myself really admiring her play. But this match sealed the deal.

Never before have I seen a woman jump in the ring and play big money matches with champion men players. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for Allison and Karen and how strong they played and dominated women's pool in the late 90s. But it was always seen as 'good for a girl'. As far as I'm concerned this is a historic moment in pool. Not only the first woman to reach 790 Fargo, but the first woman to hang with the top guys and post up the cash.

I get it. Donny is a great player but he's not quite the same as if she'd beat Alex or Dennis or even Ruslan. And I understand it was one short set and could've easily had a different result. Nevertheless what she's done is pretty amazing.

Beyond that I love the way she plays. She isn't too fast or too slow. She has awesome fundamentals but isn't overly mechanical. She doesn't look like she's overpowering the table with an explosive break or firepower, but balls go into the pockets.

I compare it to how people say that Mosconi ran 100 balls and never had a hard shot. She doesn't look like an explosive Earl or Jayson, or a back room money player with bling and hustlin gear. She just makes it look like she's a 'good' player playing a really easy game. And we all know that to do that you have to REALLY play!

I don't speak her language and may never meet her, but Chen, for what it's worth, you are officially among my pool heroes next to Nick Varner and SVB. Keep it going!

And the men pros shot themselves in the foot AGAIN, not seeing she was GOOD for pro pool. Johnnyt
