It's worth a few minutes of your time to contact Caroline at MezzUSA. Their AXI series fits your budget perfect and I promise you wouldn't find a better quality or playing cue for that money. Caroline is a sweetheart & will make sure you're happy. Whether you go with them or not, it's an option worth exploring.

What he said is good advice. Before I found this forum I purchased a Viking then purchased another Viking shaft. Then I purchased a McDermott and had a custom shaft made for it. They played well but didn't have the feel I was looking for. After finding this forum and doing lots of research I finally purchased a Mezz and the difference in hit and feel and quality is outstanding. Wish I had came here first.

I'm having a custom Merry Widow design Birdseye and Ebony 61" cue built by Schmelke and they quoted me $265. That is with their PTO laminate shaft with the 1/2 XTC low deflection ferrule.

At your age? You're 57 - still plenty of good pool playing years ahead of you! It starts with determining what your comfortable $$ budget is? Personally, I would not suggest coupling a quality LD shaft with a Players butt. Now that I've read further in to this thread, I see your budget is $400-$500. That should be enough to get you a Predator or Mezz Sneaky Pete model cue with a quality LD shaft, with the tip/shaft thickness and taper of your choice. Either of those two production cue options should maintain their resale value if you need to sell or trade it down the road.

FYI, as a Mezz dealer, I've just received notice from Mezz regarding a price changes for dealers, effective immediately. With the current popularity and demand of Mezz and Exceed cues (Mezz's high end line of cues) along with everything going up in price these days, this comes as no surprise.

Well to be short...he is really good in selling and here he is definitely the professional. The thing is really good players don't watch such videos to find out if the cue fits their game they believe much more to their own experience...they try, feel and look into such details of the cue that are important for them.

This is what I've tried to communicate before. One should look into, and research, a cue before buying it. All around, I recommend a new cue and butt combo.
if your an A player that means you run out often in nine ball on a full size table.
you should be able to play well with any cue. but of course getting what you want is right. so try out a bunch of cues someplace and pick what hits best. it should take only a couple shots to know.
thats why buying someone else's used cue works best.

Dean is correct you still have plenty of Pool left in you buy one good cue ( not as an investment ) but as a personal playing cue that you will love owning.
It is hard to go from a SW to a players cue not impossible but hard. Depending on your personal finances enjoy yourself it is a game so get as much pleasure out of it as you can.

In no way am I comparing the hit of a Players cue to that of a Southwest, but I have been lucky enough to have one Players cue that hits/feels better than any other Players cue I have ever hit with. The joint on this particular cue is piloted, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. That said, it was under $50 when I bought it new and it plays as nice as cues I have spent hundreds on.
I bet I just got lucky and just got some really good wood on both the butt and the shaft as compared to what usually is used on a Players cue.

I've played with enough cues to know at some point the money is just cosmetic and bragging rights. Not to mention when you start going away from a great cues intended shaft to go LD you lose a lot of that hit the cue is known for anyway.

According to your quote of sw cues mn most low deflection are thinner. Try a few different mm shafts. Shoot easy shots like 10 times with each Mm. It will show you which you are more accurate with!!! You can do the same with tips
Most cue shops have demo shafts
. Now the pros use 60 -70inches with extensions. Your shaft length can the same as the butt. Shorter or longer

There are no dealers near me that I can actually test drive a cue. The room I play has a very limited selection of lower end cues. I
I played Sunday, and the owner was there, so I told him my situation. He opened the cue display case, and pulled out a McDermott Star series S1 sneaky pete, and said, "go hit some balls". OMG, I fell in love right away. The hit is so solid, and the rock did exactly what I wanted it to do. This cue shoots lights out! I'm not sure if they all shoot like this, or I got lucky.
At any rate, I am extremely pleased with this cue, yes, I bought it on the spot. I played with it again yesterday, and I just can not believe how good this cue plays. The search is now over.
