Bad deal or no?

I'm curious about the arrangement between you and your friend who picked it up for you. Did your friend not know there were supposed to be tips and a metal bench?
I suspect something went haywire between the person selling it for a friend and the person picking it up for a friend.

Selling / buying for friend of a friend deals can be tricky... seen many not end well.
Did you ask for and / or get pics of all the items included in the deal?
I sure would have, that way everyone is on the same page and your friend would know exactly what he is picking up ......

No, my buddy did not know about the "extras." He's in NW Montana and is holding the lathe until I'm able to move it East.
I did not. I trusted the seller to deliver what was advertised. Obviously that was a mistake.
bummer the deal went south.... hope it works out in your favor.
have you tried to call Don or whatever his name was? the guy who was selling for his friend?
Without all the facts, I tend to agree with the above posters.
If your friend who picked up your equipment had been given advance photos of
everything that was to be picked up (pictures provided to you by the seller),
the likelihood of misunderstandings, errors or fast ones may have been
largely minimized.

By the way, is anything documented in texts, emails, voicemails that outlines
everything in your deal, that you can provide your friend?

I texted him and he told me the tips were too valuable to include in the deal. He told me to contact the "seller" when I pointed out I didn't get what was advertised. I left a message and my call has not been returned.
I can't argue with that.
this seems like a done deal if neither on the selling side will help out.

It's obvious now he scammed you . Unless he calls you back and sends the missing parts.
But, you failed due diligence too.

I also have to say there would be a different outcome if the shoe was on the other foot.

This is quoted word for word right from the post that you quoted, it clearly states the metal bench and tooling is included.
When I am involved in 3rd party dealings I always make sure to have my cell phone handy. As far as I know all smart phones have cameras, very nice ones at that, and almost everyone has a smart phone. I always take a picture and send it to the end buyer just to make sure that I am being sold the correct items just to cover my ass. It takes only seconds to snap a few pictures and text or email them to someone. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I am sorry for your misfortune.
I agree. If the lathe is ok then enjoy and move on. As for dealing with people privately....danger they're a stranger.
But yes you're allowed to complain. Screw jobs that happened to me years ago still linger.
Not trying to make you feel worse than you already do but perhaps you should have made sure he knew exactly what he was supposed to pick up - maybe give you a call when he got there.

Regardless if your buddy did not pick it up, he can go back and pick it up again. so, yes, more work for your buddy, but you are owed the metal bench, tips and accessories.

What are these tips, how many were supposed to be included, and what is their retail value? Who retained the tips, the owner or the middleman?
It's frankly fraudulent advertising to say the tips are included, then after payment is accepted and long-distance pickup arranged claim they are too valuable to be included. Same with substituting a wood bench for the metal one, unless the wood bench is clearly equal or superior.
At the very least the person who received payment owes you what was advertised originally, or a refund amounting to the value of the items not present at pickup.

Don had a good profile and moderate activity here. He acted as agent, promoted the advertisement, accepted the items for forwarding to you through your friend. All that means he accepted responsibility he lightly can't pass off if he is a man of integrity. He will hopefully do his best to get you what was advertised. Otherwise, the usual methods can be used - complaint to USPS if they were used, to PayPal or your credit card company. Cash? then have to rely on honesty and integrity of the seller and his agent to realize their wrong and make it right.
If the tips were lathe accessories and not just cue tips, they only have value to use with another lathe, or to resell to someone else. The owner is supposed to not be able to use a lathe, so what does he need the tips for if not to resell in a new deal... just a thought.
But apparently it's been over a month since the deal was agreed upon, right? At the very least Don [pulzcul] does not deserve any positive comment for his for-sale post.

According to Don there were Mooris and Kamuis (unknown quantity). He never said how many but indicated to me that the tips made this a good deal. They were a selling point. As stated, it was decided that the tips were too valuable to include and this was not disclosed. Thus, I'm pretty heated. I trusted Don based on his reputation here and in Montana.
