Danny Smith won $1500 minus $160

you can deduct all related expenses if you play professionally. so no irs bill.

they have to weight it near the top for payouts as there is so little prize fund it wouldn't attract many if spread down as people look at the big payout..

if the players want big payouts they need to have big entry fees, simple as that.

Exactly. Most entries are not sponsored. The only way you'll have larger payouts would be to up entry fees and/or have some sort of sponsorship or house contribution.

We've already covered the challenges with the money in pool numerous times before. It's not 1984 anymore.

I won 5 matches which brought me to round 7. I didn't pay attention to the place I finished in but I'm assuming top 50ish in a field of 500. I won $300 back which means my net profit was $140.

I played around with some numbers and came up with a payout grid below. I have no idea how the places work out with the weird 'buyback' format, but using a standard double elimination structure it seems that the payouts could've been a bit more. Below is what I would expect to see based on the field size and the entry fees. This would be 100% payout but no money added. I think with over 500 entrants and 50% rebuys this is pretty close.

Now I want to be clear that I'm not complaining. I work for a living and don't expect to make money from pool. It's my choice to come, and I do so to test my skills even knowing it will likely cost me money to do so. DCC can run their tournaments however they want, they aren't forcing anyone to play. I didn't do any research before coming because it probably wouldn't have changed anything for me. I'm sure DCC has tremendous expenses and there are more economics at play than I understand. I'm not saying I could run a better event. I was just a bit surprised and it sounds like I wasn't the only one.

I think this is just a good reminder of the state of pool. You'd better either be the best in the world or treat it as a hobby.

Place Payout
1 10000
2 7500
3 5000
4 4000
5-6 3000
7-8 2500
9-12 2000
13-16 1500
17-24 1200
25-33 1000
34-48 800
49-64 600
65-96 400
Total 77800

I know this is not the correct payout for the Bank Pool Division. 503 players times $100 each equals $50,300 plus $10,000 in added money and the total purse/payout should be $60,300. I would like to see how that was broken down. Does anyone know where to find the payouts for each division at DCC this year?

Number make sense... kind of;

Not counting buy-backs, the purse is 503*$110 = $55,330

Last years payouts show $23k was payed out over the top 8.

Pay went down to 86th place, so $32,000/78 = $410 average

86 is less that 1/4 of the field (which is normal to pay)

It is just hard to divide the money up that thin.

The issue is the payouts are not top heavy, but field thin.

One example, coming 6th only payed twice what tied for 14-22 payed.

This is incorrect. See my post #22 above.

Jay, I think you forgot to add in for the players to do the $50 buy back. If, say, 200 players bought back, that would be another $10k on top of what you mentioned?

Then how did Danny get $1,500? Did somebody pay his entry and he had to split it with them?
The math doesnt add up.

This isn't directed at you Jay, meant to quote the payouts.

The buy-back money does not go into the purse!

i have 4 modest incomes and I still think i'm under paid.
And I said the same thing to the Butler when he asked for a raise.
And dont get me started on the cook.
And the service writer at the Bentley dealer thinks I'm rich.

Yeah, but how's your Bank Pool game?

US Amatuer Golf pays out nothing but players love to play and never complain
about not making a living

Pro pool is a funny hybrid that doesn't have enough interest to pay big prize money

I would like to get paid big money to sing, but nobody wants to pay to hear me

Danny and the others had a good time, they probably feel that they had an opportunity to
win some money games . Isn't that what Efren used to do/

Whether you like it or not,pro pool players depend on winning money games

Does Danny give lessons? I've read he's the house pro at Buffalos in New Orleans.

Danny usually is in a lot of action? Not hearing of any this yr.

Sorry I did not read everything... but the buyback money goes towards master of the table. Just FYI when trying to do the math.

The Master of the Table prizes total $25,000. The buybacks total far more than that. So you can think of the buybacks as funding the MOT plus some other event expenses.

With the amount of entries the bank pool tournament gets, they need to raise the prize fund period. They constantly draw the biggest number of entries due to people wanting the free access after. While some of the added money gets spread around, it should mainly be towards the main 3 disciplines at the DCC as everything else whether people like it or not are sideshows.

I am ready to play a rig game with you two old farts.

Guaranteed to be HIGHLY entertaining.

I don't hit two balls a month anymore. My poor pool table is neglected, only there for the champions who stop by to practice.

I'm not sure who the other old fart is, but this old fart will still play some Bank Pool on a couple of days notice. I've just got to unwind my cranky arm and I'm ready to go.

Okay, let's do it! Black-Balled, Measureman and me. Where and when do we meet?
If you guys come to L.A. the table time is free, the table is jam up, and you can each have your own bedroom. There is also a wonderful complimentary breakfast served daily by a gorgeous waitress!
Sorry this pic is SO big, but I don't know how to downsize it.
