The Color of Money (film 1986)

Two things:

To your first point you totally get what the character is about!

To the second Richard Rawlings is a regular at your pool hall/bar? Sounds a lot like him:grin-square:

The guy reminds me of Jamie Kennedy in Malibu's Most Wanted

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328099/mediaviewer/rm752916736

I've not seen our guy pull off any big money yet but I'm waiting. I feel like Eddie watching Vincent for the first time thinking...this guy can't be real.

One other thing my guy does is constantly checks his big watch...when he does, he snaps his arm/wrist straight forward and then slowly bends it as he looks down at the time...Freaking brilliant.

I will try and snap a pic of him next time and try and blue his face so you can see.

Love to see that picture:thumbup:

If there is a sequel with Tom Cruise, I would like a scene where he finds out that his Balabushka is really a Joss.

In the beginning of the movie, Fast Eddie was also distributing counterfeit liquor. There was a line about tasting low fusil oil and getting the same kegs as the big guys. Also, the Chinese love this stuff, just like ebony nosed SouthWest cues. So, this would fit in with Eddie's character of bait and switch salesman.

That's right. He said he could get her some particular liquor bottle labels as well (Wild Turkey?)

I absolutely love this movie. It came out when I was 8 years old. I watched it then and have probably seen it 5000 times, LOL.

"What you got in that case?"

(opens purple velvet case slowly and looks up at Otis with a sh*t eating grin)

"Doom!"

And third and final 'Hustler' movie? Why, One Pocket of course !

We could get The Freezer as the bad guy.. sorry, Keith!

I always thought COM should have been more about Eddie and less about Vincent
hamming it up.. all those connect-the-dot run outs.. the book was waaaay better.
My favorite scene in COM ?.. when Eddie takes Vincent to the pool room where they're
playing each other for the first time.. the houseman: "This here's Mr. Eddie Felson,
who are you?.. the king of the world??"

end of the road

I ain't seen it 5000 times, but isn't it Mozelle involved in this scene?

I liked COM OK, but it’s not a “film”. Hustler’s a film - COM’s a movie.

Newman only got the acting Oscar for COM because he deserved it for Hustler.

chgo

IMO I think they gave Newman the Oscar for COM because he didn't
get it for The Verdict, which he should have.. great film.

They gave it Henry Fonda because he was on his death bed.
Newman deserved it 100%.
He didn't even show up for the academy when he won it.

I read somewhere that the video game Doom was named after this scene from TCOM.

Which is not to say TCOM is anything less than excellent and able to stand on its own. True, Tom Cruise is hard to like here, but he does a good job. Scorsese directs like he actually knows pool.
A minor quibble I had with the Hustler was Eddie going off like a maniac on the guy he beat which led to getting his thumbs broken. That scene detracted from an otherwise smart movie. Imho.

Tom Cruise is actually very easy to like. His character Vincent, not so much. Just shows you how good an actor he was, even back then.

There are great scenes aplenty in the movie and one of the best was already touched on, which was Forest Whitaker and Newman in the hustling scene. However for my money one of the best acted scenes was Newman and Cruise in the toy store talking while the character Vincent was on his break. Pay close attention to just how much Cruise reveals about the Vincent character in that short interaction using nothing but his expressions and speech patterns, culminating in the outburst at 'Lou' ("Hey Lou, can you see we're talking here? Do me a favor and take care of it, would you!"), which showcased just how insecure and on edge Eddie had gotten him. Really fantastic writing, acting and direction there, basically setting the character's motivation for the main arc of the movie to even take place, and all in like four minutes of dialog.

Really have to take exception with whoever called the screenwriter a second rate hack, by the way. Richard Price is a well known and very prolific screenwriter with a ton of A list movie credits, not to mention penning several episodes of The Wire and basically the entire miniseries The Night Of. He's a far better writer than Walter Tevis ever was, in my opinion, and I liked Tevis's books quite a bit.

Fun fact: Price had a cameo in TCOM as the character sitting at the bar who tells the bartender to call 'Dud' aka Forest Whitaker.

Also one of the pros in the scenes shot at Chris's Billiards in Chicago that hasn't been yet mentioned is my old pal Willie Munson. The other interesting cameo is Iggy Pop as the skinny guy that sticks his tongue out at Carmen.

And for those that aren't aware, it's Scorsese himself who does the voice over at the very beginning as he describes the game of 9-ball.

I saw someone who acted like that around strangers.. Our team played in an non sanctioned industrial league
a few months after TCOM film can out. We played against a new team & 1 guy had a decent cue with no case.
He must've thought he was the hustler (Are you a hustler Amos?) in the movie.. but let you know he's a player.

The two of us were playing. He ran a few balls before leaving me with no shot, I looked at the balls on the table.
There was no way I could hit one of my balls without kicking. That's when he started the Tom Cruise cue dance.
He was near the juke box twirling his cue like Vincent.. I walked over.. My $10 says you won't get another shot.

He came to the table & looked at my situation. Pulled out 10 and said, you're on man. I laid down 10 next to his.

Two of his balls were close to the CB.. I bent over like I was going to shoot, then I stood up and bent over again.
I stood up and turned in the opposite direction, lined up on the 8 ball and fired it in. His $10 went into my pocket.

.

Beautiful!

But this guy was mimicking something he saw Tom Cruise do in the movie. I'd say prior to that movie scene it would've been near zero chance of seeing anybody in a bar or poolhall helicopter their cue around like a ninja about to lay everybody in the room out.

Another fun tidbit is that some friends of mine had a bunch of shirts made up for their team that all said 'VINCE' on the front, and then wore them down at the VNEA championships in Vegas. They turned a lot of heads that week, lol.

Agree 100%, Newman was incredible in The Verdict.

Newman was overlooked several times. Never mind The Verdict and The Hustler, but he was also amazing in HUD, Hombre, Cool Hand Luke, and Absence of Malice, not to mention in his huge roles like Butch Cassidy, The Sting, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Of course for my money I'll always take the pool movies and Slap Shot as my favorites.

Yes sir, the "H" movies as I call 'em.. love the jump scene in Butch Cassidy..

"What's the matter with you?.."

" I can't swim.."

"Are you crazy?.. the fall will kill you!!"
