It's obvious that Efren is #1, so he doesn't need my vote(s).
Considering all games (1-P, 14.1, 9B, 8B, etc.), Pagulayan probably deserves top billing.
So.....
Pagulayan-5
Good job boosting Alex, causing a two-spot jump. He probably deserves it.

I will give Efren 3 and SVB 2.

I admit that I haven't watched enough of some of the older players like Sigel or Varner to know how they would stack up against SVB. But I recall during one of the TAR matches I believe that one of the commentators that has seen them all play for decades, comment that he just doesn't see how anyone could play better than SVB played in that match.

Nice move.

I like this idea Dave, thinking now though maybe 10 points to give out would’ve made the last 5-7 slots more accurate. I think most people felt they had to be really careful with their 5 to make sure the top spots had “the ones” without worrying so much about the others. True the thread is about finding the GOAT, but we all knew who would be there so I’m also interested in the rest of the list

Everybody does get 10 points total, but the last 5 are for the second round (starting tomorrow) after we finish trimming the list down to 10.

It looks like the Top 10 are fairly clear (especially the Top 6), so I think things are going well. I look forward to seeing how things change in the 2nd round now that people know more about how the voting and scoring works.

To me, the real goals are to find the Top 1 and the Top 5 (and the Top 10, to a lesser extent).

Regards,
Dave

Well, I'm not Dave, but I'll take a crack at this.

Efren is the best ever in two disciplines, eight ball and one pocket. Some say he's also the best 15-ball rotation player ever. He's a top ten ever at nine ball. He has always played his best in the toughest events and has captured so many of the game's biggest ever paydays. When he dabbled in straight pool, he managed a second place finish in the 1993 US Open 14.1 event. His ability to excel in every discipline within the game has blown us all away. His six Derby City Classic Master of the Table titles at Derby City further validate his claim to being the best all-around player in the modern era, and he's probably the best all-around player ever (no disrespect intended to Nick Varner, Luther Lassiter, or Harold Worst, who are in the conversation).

Yup, Efren's popular, but his ability to adapt to and excel at any game played on a pool table is what has blown us all away.

I fully agree with this. And I believe the main reason is his touch. Nobody has ever controlled the cue ball like Efren. Even the pool player with the next best cue ball control (whomever that may be) isn't even on the same planet as Efren. He may have never been the most dominant 9-ball player, because 9-ball success relies heavily on breaking and precise cue ball control isn't always a determining factor (though he still beat Earl in a race to 120 when Earl was in his prime). But overall, it isn't even a question for me. Efren knows the most, and he's able to apply that knowledge with a touch that literally no other human has been able to demonstrate IMO. Efren gets all 5 points from me.

P.S. Efren is clearly going to win here. I think it would almost be more interesting to use this format to determine the 2nd greatest player of all time.

The purpose of the voting and scoring is not just to determine the Top GOAT. That is obviously Efren. The purpose is to find the Top 10 GOAT. I'm sure the 2nd round of voting will help refine the short list some. For more info, see the first post.

Ahhh I see. Top 10 GOAT is much more interesting. In that case, I will award all 5 points to Dennis O. He may not have the trophies of the other top 10, but he has held the top dog money player status for over a decade

I believe post 198 brings Orcullo's total to 44, placing him sixth.
