Appreciate all you do and have done for az:)

Want to request a scientific study as to whether rapping on table while a ball is rolling effects the outcome.

I think its unsportsmanlike conduct. First-time loss of game. Second time loss of hand. Yes I am serious.

Do you have any feeling for what kind of effect it might have? Is it that the ball will go farther or shorter?

Also, is this about gentle finger tapping, slapping the rail, or fist pounding on the bed of the table?

There was a thread a few years back on this very subject. I did a quick search but my key words must be off. Maybe someone will remember and post a link.

dang, I opened this up thinking I might see dr. dave bust a flow ^_^
y'know dr., if you're looking for a surefire way to get your youtube hits up...

Hand slapping on the slate.
I believe vibrations slow the roll as they act to "check up" roll.

And yes I may have posted about this before:rolleyes:

That sounds like someone I wouldn't want to shoot pool with. Is this a regular thing when you play this person?

If your playing on a commercial table I doubt very seriously your gonna change the end result of a rolling cb by slapping the table.

Regardless if it's possible or not, nobody should be hitting the table in any manner.

Having said that, I see nothing wrong with patting the table as part of a habit.

I've seen people pat the table a million times because they over ran position. I've been guilty of doing that myself.

In the end, if a table is so light that it can be moved/jarred/vibrating simply from someone hitting it with their hand, I would question the integrity of the table and the player.

I have seen guys do this in jest in a casual geme when there was a hanger but I've never seen a player do it in a serious match. On a bar table the "hanger" will sometime fall in the pocket if you hit the base of your cue in the corner where the ball is hanging. All in all I've seen very little if any cheating in pool and I've been around the game for 60 years. I've seen close calls on good or bad hits and moving balls by accident but nothing intentional to speak of.

Thank you ... and you're welcome. I aim to swerve. :grin-square:

Your request is duly noted, but I have no such interest. It is unacceptable behavior and should incur an "outside inteference" or "unsportsmanlike conduct" foul. And it is not very effective at changing the outcome of a shot anyway, unless you really pound the table right next to the ball, or smack the rail sideways right when a ball is hitting a cushion, or smack the table to help a ball fall, or smack the side of the rail with your hip hard enough to shift the table while you are pounding as a distraction. Blowing on a moving ball is much more effective.

Dave
