Went to a remodeled pool hall today, 13.50 per hour?

When the pride parade happens in NYC, paraders support the pool room. In volume numbers.
You can't get that kind of foot traffic unless its a prom or something in other countries.

What the heck does Gay Pride have to do with Pool Room prices per hr?

Im introducing cross promotion and cultural inclusion.
Supposedly topic dropping helps new people pay attention long.

Did you know that Amsterdam Billiards has had multiple locations across NYC in different time periods?
(that last bit is DrDave inspired)

I last visited NYC so long ago I am sure you were not even born yet.

Gay Pride Parade, was not even an idea. The Parade was Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade people takes about.

Corporate America took over the Macy's Parade
New York is always putting spotlights and representing as many different problems equally.

Steinway Billiards has been hosting comedians in the pool hall. Steinway has a different customer base.

I saw a place just like that in Dallas Texas. Billy Incardona was one of the principles. The place was in a kinda heavy commercial area best I recall and still had the chinese restaurant sign out front. It had seven tables instead of fifteen or so but it was also around twenty years ago and the nine foot Diamond were set up to take dollar coins. Only selling very limited snacks, you could bring your own beer in. I looked at the place, realized that it had to be a honey trap of sorts. Billy was ready and willing to play anybody that came through the door, betting pretty high! Catch was Billy misjudged his current skills and the road players were a black hole instead of a source of income. The place closed shortly!

Asking seriously, what keeps the room you described open? It would have to have a 100% use more hours of the day than I have ever seen a pool room have and I don't think it would fly then.

I can't believe it was 20 years ago. There were posts on hear with pics about it. I wish I could remember that place. IIRC it was painted black or dark blue, no frills, I thought it would make it.

If you see problem that bother you get your hand dirty fixing them.

It is possible to make change like cleaning up a neighborhood, all you need is pair of gloves, plastic sack, and some time. One bad if trash in bag is less trash on ground.

I think your good at point your finger at what you perceive as a problem, that is easy.

try after point at a problem fixing something.

It was around 2006? 2007? Action spot mostly-run like a private club.

I just took a WAG as about twenty years ago. I don't think as new as fifteen years ago but it is possible.

It was almost purely an action spot and set up indeed like a private club. Seems like they might have been trying a weekly or monthly tournament too but it was never going to survive on obvious cash flow.

It has been open for years and is not in a seedy part of town.

It is way downtown and only a mile or so from Waikiki.

It is not too well known as far as I know. I usually see the same faces pretty much whenever I get a chance to go on Sunday mornings.

Alcohol is not allowed. I saw a couple guys bring in a 12-pack of beer a couple weeks back and the counter guy quickly jumped their asses and made them take it back to their car.

They have several cameras set up and the guy at the counter can see everything going on inside and outside the pool hall.

How they stay open...I don’t know. With the virus going on, every other table is covered. You may walk in and find a table or two open, but you usually have to call first to make a reservation if you want to ensure you have a table.

I visited my brother who was at Tripler in the seventies. I stayed walking distance to Waikiki. I don't remember stumbling on a pool hall but the bars were on the pricey side for a poor boy! Got to agree, that ain't the low rent district. Got a paper and looked at real estate just killing time. First time I ever saw property being sold by the frontage inch!

I don't know how they make it but cards they aren't showing! I know a couple places where there was a pool hall but the owner was the owner of an entire strip mall, the pool hall didn't have to make money. Pretty sure Greenway was like that, Lambert owned a fair sized shopping center and seems like he might have been a river pilot too. Those guys have a license to steal. The ships can't do their own navigating on the Mississippi and the pilots make salaries in the movie star range or did back then. Reminds me, after moving away and moving back many years later I noticed Greenway was still open. I walked in at ten or so one morning. A few old geezers at the counter drinking coffee and reading the paper. The tables didn't look like they had any maintenance since I left. Memory doesn't really serve, 12-16 Gold Crowns in the front? Seemed bigger, maybe as many as 24 tables but I haven't been there in decades. Anyway, to play on those ratty old tables they wanted fourteen an hour. "Naah", Greenway never was a huge favorite with me and nostalgia wasn't that strong! Greenway was a major road hub once. A lot of people I didn't know but I saw Buddy and Keith, Jose Parica in there too. Jose was willing to get in action out front, by the front door indeed, but I had been warned and just watched from a distance. That "little fella" could play some pool!

You are right about it being pricey here.

Median cost for a house here is about a million.

Condo is about half that.

Your guess was not terrible. I post this for informational purposes...not to upstage you:

There are more posts here but these are pretty good.

There are some pretty solid names in those threads as posters, a few of them are no longer with us. I see you posted in there too Mr. Hu. Happy you are still here: pool player, hot rodder, Azb character..pretty good resume.

If you wanted to go out of your way to support the new place, bring a sparring partner with you. Can still do your solo grind at the $8 rooms.

I wouldn't read too much into the "recovered the tables" excuse. He set his price on what he thinks he needs. Also, in the year 2021, the majority of people behind the counter know more about slinging beer than pool. Could have come up with that nonsense on her own.

Priciest place I ever saw in person was Santa Barbara, $15/hr, and that was 2013 or 2014.

I had this idea that when the economy does worse, rents get cheaper and pool halls do better; when the economy's better, the opposite.

So on that theory, we should be in for a decent period after covid. But it might take a while to materialize.

Coocoo and jutsdum conversing...could there be anything more HIGHlarious?

You can't recognize grammar errors unless people show you them.

I think Coocoo was a former Grammarian. The emphasis is on former.

Not to throw shade on your comment, but inflation is caused by too many dollars chasing too few goods (classic economic definition). We’ve been throwing too much money at people who don’t produce anything. Looks like from now til the end of the year, we will have inflation rates we haven’t seen in years.
And the government and banks do this on purpose. It allows them to pay back debt with devalued dollars. Meanwhile, they can start to scoop up hard assets as those in the middle class are forced to sell when they cannot keep up with payments due to overall rising costs on all goods. The government and central banks fudge the numbers on inflation just like they do everything else. Time will tell if velocity can increase to keep inflation in check. I am not holding my breath though. Until the government stops with the covid restrictions, stimmy checks, and extra unemployment....there will be shortages in the labor pool. That along with the bullshit going on with supply chain will keep the velocity from increasing and thus help to push inflation higher. The rich, the banks, and government will not be impacted. They have us right where they want us. When they start rolling out digital currencies that they can turn on or off which also have "expiration dates"....well, that will seal the deal. https://www.forbes.com/sites/enriqu...cy-is-about-to-disrupt-money/?sh=50c40a3d1665

China has been the testing ground for all of the bs we have been seeing. Mass quarantines, health passports, social credit scores, etc. They have already been doing it and now everyone is talking about implementing. Coincidence? Biden has already called for eliminating credit ratings as they exist now and implementing a social credit score for citizens. This is and always has been about power and control. Period.

Where do you think the supply chain issues stem from? CHINA They make the shipping containers, nearly all the raw materials, a ton of semi-finished and finished parts, electronic components, etc. I am sure it is all an accident... Then you have the damn union port workers taking advantage of the covid situation for paid time off...delays at the port to offload ships is nuts. All of it is by design. But what do I know....I am just a nutjob "conspiracy theorist".
