I'm sure this will go well...
Mosconi, the legend of straight pool. Should the Europe vs USA, 9 BALL EVENT, be named after a player whom everyone on this site and in the pool world doesn't even put in the top 10, or 20 for that matter, 9-ball players ever?

It would be fitting for one day to have a team continental tournament (whole world), multi-discipline pool games, called the Reyes Cup, right... the whole world would agree with that being proper, right!

Shouldn't the greatest 9-ball event, at least next to the WC, be named after the greatest 9-ball player????? That's right, and, what better time to make the change than the year he's brought back to the fold!!!! It must be done...

THE STRICKLAND CUP!

Mosconi played great 9 ball and a few times he drilled some top 9 ball players of his era.
He might have had in his prime the best control of the cue ball ever.
He hated the game and only played when he had too.
And his skill in 9 ball was told to me by people that saw it.
But you are right why call it the Mosconi cup other then to honor one of the greatest players ever.
The STRICKLAND CUP?
Maybe that would get some big Pharma support.
Hes a walking ad for Prozac.

As is the norm, lets compare pool to golf. The golf equalivent to the Mosconi Cup is the Ryder Cup. The Ryder cup is named after the individual who donated the trophy in 1927 (I googled it).

Considering current ownership, how about the MatchRoom Cup...?

Can't argue with anything you've said, and, for clarity, I'm not saying he wasn't great.
I'm just saying his name is more synonymous with straight pool opposed to 9-ball.

No, it shouldn't. The Mosconi Cup, conceived in the wake of Mosconi's death in 1993, and named with the permission and support of his widow, paid fitting tribute to the man generally considered to have been the greatest player of all time to that point. The event has been contested in every year since Willie's death and rightly honors his legacy.

Willie Mosconi was the Best Pool player. His reign was Supreme during his era. Honor the Man and the Profession he chose and Championed. The True Gentleman of Taste and Class and anyone winning the Mosconi Cup should be honored that it was named after the Pocket Billiards Champion.

Now this makes sense. I was not aware this and thank you for posting.

The phenomenon evidenced here is a huge part of the problem with today's earth residents: they view everything through an ignorantly myopic lense.

Things- especially those that have large impact- are not the way they are for no reason. Failure to investigate historical facts pertaining to whatever the item/ issue is leads to ignorant conclusions.

Additionally, it sets the precedent that current-ignorant- thought overrides historical fact. In decades to come, people will be asking why their specific special interest wasn't of concern.

Go, Skins!

ah, I see we've found the resident genius. Good job articulating your inner zen wisdom for the rest of the mortals here. I bet you sit around waiting for chances to type this woe is me the world's doomed junk. The problem with people like you is that you can't see the fact the issue with the next generation is your own damn fault for letting it happen.

Go Earl!

You may drop your mic now, sir.

I did not intend for you to feel personally attacked and I am sorry the words I chose resulted in such.

I don't think the world is doomed at all. The pendulum swings and I seriously hope that right now we are about at the furthest edge of 'look, this is wrong and it should change to the way today says it should be'.

Outside of pool, nobody knows the names better than Mosconi or Minnesota Fats (at least here in the U.S). The two most popular people to ever play and name recognition. Steve Mizerak (beer commercials) could be 3rd in name recognition. In Europe I'm sure a few Snooker players will be on the list of on-the-street name recognition.

Most people are ignorant of their own choosing.

There are more avenues to obtain information than ever before in history, yet people are too lazy to search for information themselves and expect others to spoon feed it to them.

When is the Mosconi Cup this year? And where is it being played this year?

I think there are web pages that describe it in detail, but since I already have my tickets, I'll just look at them and say... Alexandra Palace, north part of London, England, UK, from 7 to 10 December. Tickets are still available.

.... found one ....

Earl Strickland is still alive, maybe we can wait to name a tournament after him. I agree that it is ironic to name a 9-ball event after a man primarily acclaimed for his straight pool accomplishments but, at least in the USA, his name is synonymous with pool in general. Nothing wrong with tossing ideas out there, though.
