Eagle Eye Takes Aim at 14.1 High Runs

350. End patterns are a little spread out, but flow well. He’s looking great.

He overcut this one after navigating a super hard rack previously. Just gave it a little extra and it rattled out.

It's past midnight on the east coast but he appears to be starting a new run.

I am a guy in favor of tables that are somewhat easier than the Diamond pro cuts as far as 14.1 play is concerned. However, I have to agree with this post, I just watched a small amount of Jason this week on Facebook and , at least from what I have seen, the table does look very, very generous in the way the balls are entering the pockets. It almost looks like a pool ball vacuum the way some shots hit way up from pocket and then are pocketed, as well as the free space between pocket facings when a ball goes in clean.

I remember this as well when John Schmidt was doing his thing in pursuit. Maybe it is just the appearance on screen, and maybe this is what Mosconi was playing on that magical night as well, I am not sure and I am not pretending to know all the facts about these three tables.

To me, watching a bit of Jason play this week, yes, this table looks ridiculous - it looks that way - I don't know bc I am not playing on it though.

I saw the table at Easy Street Billiards that John made his run on 2 days after the run. And, I played on the table next to it. These pockets look like basketball hoops compare to those.

Nothing against Jayson or any of the others trying this out. Jayson is amazing and I have a new respect for his ability, which is saying a lot. He looks like he could run forever on this table. But my old Brunswick 9 foot home version had much tighter pockets than these. If somebody passes Willie or John on this table, I won't view it as a credible record.

But kudos to the "Legends" folks for setting this up. Anything to further 14.1. I just wish they had set up a table with respectable specifications. Maybe they can address that before other great players make their attempts. I hope they do. Still, I'll enjoy watching and hope this furthers 14.1.

I don't think you understand the whole point here. While they deny it publicly, the whole point is to try to ensure that John's record gets broken. Yes, they like straight pool in general as well yada yada yada, but the main point and the timing is all about trying to ensure that John's run gets broken and the way to do that is to make the table as easy as humanly possible but where you can still hopefully be able to make a half legitimate sounding claim about how the table resembles something that could actually possibly be found somewhere out there in the wild.

I get that and don't disagree with you. But I still want to stay positive about something that is creating interest around straight pool.

The last rack of the night was really bizarre. He had an easy shot to get position on a side pocket break. He never even considered it thus ending the run with a scratch off the rack. ??????

I will address it for you now. The pockets are just under 5 inch and the side pockets 5.3 inches. It might seem that they are bigger but the cloth is brand new and has a lot of slide to it. Im sure you have played on brand new felt so you know what Im talking about. Shaw had a great day and thus is the current leader in the Legends event. Amazing what players can do when with unlimited attempts as they never have tried anything like this before so its all new to them. 4 days so far with Shaw and his numbers are great and I hope everyone enjoys watching but I know that no matter what people will try to pick things apart and as I learned from Upstate Al last week at Turning Stone event he said there will always be complainers and simply tell them if they dont like what they are seeing on a free live stream offer them a refund and also tell them to watch something else and I agree 100% with Upstate Al on this one.

The factors are, the pockets, new cloth and very clean slippery balls. This adds up to the pockets playing like they are an inch bigger. That is just a fact.

And harder to control the cue ball and the movements of the object balls and extra scratches. So the pockets are legit, the cloth is legit and the balls are legit the stream is great quality and The world greatest players playing and the stream is free. Oh well no reason to break it down anymore as we are trying to help our sport and the players in which we all should try to do.

Bobby,

Thanks for the reply.

As I said, "kudos to the 'Legends' folks for setting this up. Anything to further 14.1." and "I'll enjoy watching and hope this furthers 14.1."

You are obviously putting a lot of work into this. I thank you for that and genuinely hope it does create more interest in straight pool as I love the game.

It's not surprising that people are discussing the pockets because they do appear to visually differ from standard 5" pockets on a GC, or even from the Brunswick home version I had before I bought my Diamond pro cut. And, since I saw the pockets on the table John Schmidt made his run on within 2 days of the run, I can say that in my opinion the pockets on this table are significantly more accepting of shots that would be a miss on these other tables.

I don't think this makes me a "complainer." In fact, I've bent over backwards to applaud what you are doing. I just hope you guys will adjust the pockets to standard issue to match a GC type table so that these great players you are bringing in are playing on standard equipment that everyone knows and there is a good basis for comparison. I don't claim to have the expertise that accomplished players like you have. But, if you want passionate fans, you know us fans come with our own opinions! I think that's what's actually needed to grow a sport - lot's of fans who care enough to have opinions. I try to offer mine in a constructive way.

Regardless of whether you guys decide to take my humble suggestion, I still thank you for putting this event together. What great performances we've seen from SVB, Ruslan, Earl and now Jayson. I will continue to watch and support, and look forward to what you have planned next! Best.

I don’t get this table comparison stuff. These guys have shown us pictures of the table pockets with measurements. We know that JS played on 5” pockets. The same. We don’t have pictures of his table with measurements as far as I’m aware, but the 5” pockets hasn’t been disputed by anyone involved. I’m pretty sure we all also know that Mosconi set his run on an 8 foot 5” table.

Anyway, you can find pictures of this table’s pockets taken from above with measurements. You can get out your software of choice and measure the angles of the pockets and depth of the shelves. Total transparency from them.

For me personally, I wouldn’t feel quite right about doing anything on a table larger than 4.5”, but I have zero issue with anything accomplished during this event because they have been transparent with everything they are doing, and some dude saying JS’s table felt like it played tighter than this table “appears” to isn’t going to change my mind.
