How do you know that the cue ball didn't travel down the tangent line? If he is aiming the object ball at the side pocket, then the tangent line looks like it goes through the ball closest to the end rail--which is the ball that the cue ball hit full in the face.

Actually, the CB hit the eight ball immediately after hitting the OB.

It did travel down the tangent line and then the next tangent line, and then it was hit again sending it forward.
