Eye glasses for pool

The markup on eye-wear is incredible...
The following videos explain the biggest reason why. No telling what all else this company owns now that we are a few more years down the road. Not knocking them, just info for people that are curious as to one of the biggest reasons the markups are so high.

These solved the problem for me. I can wear my everyday progressive lenses while playing pool.

I disagree with your comment that glasses are unnecessary for so many reasons. Are you a doctor, NO. Can everyone wear contacts, NO very simple answer, YES glasses are necessary for lots of people...
Of course contacts are not the answer for everyone.
bbb was a prime example of that (post #20 in this thread).
Do you wear glasses and do you enjoy wearing them while playing pool.
Would you like to get rid of them?
Have you tried contacts?

I knew about Luxxotica and that they control the market. I would be curious to know if Zenni is under their umbrella or not? Perhaps not now but if they prove to be successful enough I am sure Luxxotica will buy them out as well...

Just looked online and Zenni is not owned by Luxxotica at this time. They own their own facility and manufacture then sell direct to the customer...

Well when I go for annual VA Eye thing, if my reading prescription has not changed.

Might ask for prescription to see edge of Pool balls better.

I have two pair. One exclusively for pool. I simply looked for the largest lenses they had so I'm looking through the lens and not over the top.

Go to a place with a large selection of lenses.

What frames from Zenni do you recommend so they extend above the eyebrow? I've found they need to go that high when shooting a table length shot unless you have quite an upright stance.
I've gone through a dozen pair of zenni. Plastic frames from they are always perfect for me. Metal frame and sports lenses haven't worked out too well for me from them.

I got the highest frames I could and they aren't near high enough to make any difference in playing pool. You gotta go custom for that. Someday I will. I can't wear contacts anymore.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I've looked at their frames and some looked close, but I just wasn't sure. Appreciate the input.

My glasses work for me and I have no way of knowing if they will work for you or not. Our individual eye locations and facial bone structure could be totally different. I will add I have been using Decot for years but wanted to try something else that is substantially less costly. So I took a chance, now I am going to purchase a second pair.

The website has a virtual try on which is very simple to perform. I used the camera on my desktop for my photo then tried many different frames. You can also shop by size, gender and a plethora of other filters. My wife thought I was crazy at first and I tend to agree but now I have become a believer. The markup on eye-wear is incredible... They do have a referral program which I am not interested in BTW. Just passing along my own experience. I will add the lens height on my first glasses was 38 mm, the new ones I am ordering are 41 mm. I also recommend nose pads which I find beneficial in holding my glasses up higher for pool. So I understand your concern, again the search filters are your friend..

To the members saying buy contacts they are not an option that worked for me. I never found any that were comfortable and past a certain age most doctors will tell you it is not likely you will be comfortable for many reasons, dry eye seemed to be my issue...

All the best to you, I hope you find something that helps your vision needs.
Thanks for your detailed explanation. i appreciate the input. I've looked on their site and seen a number of pairs that looked like they might work, but wasn't sure they would be large enough. I live close to Bill Curran and may try him, but he just seems so expensive. I think he'll be at the Expo in April and can stop at his booth.

I’m left eye dominate and I used to play without them because that eye was good. Not anymore lol without my glasses on I can’t make out the numbers on the balls. I can’t do contacts and wearing normal glasses feels so awkward after 25 plus years of playing with out them so it looks like these glasses are my only choice.

This must be the 150th thread started abut billiard glasses.
Wake up.
Get contacts.
NO GLASSES on your face at the table.
They are unnecessary.
Very simple.
Bifocals, astigmatism, no problem.
Get contacts.
Not everyone can wear contacts. I’ve tried them more then once. We aren’t all robots who are the same.

Paul Newman had some nice glasses in the color of money, Cartier Vendome Santos. I wonder if the lenses are big enough to not see the frame on longer shots.

One last thought concerning pool glasses and associated height of the lenses when you are playing pool is the location of the where the glasses sit on you nose. In looking into this a little further today I decided to do two things.

First I measured the size in millimetres of the vertical height of my Decot lenses, they measure approximately 48.80 mm. Mine are set into the junior size frames so the larger frames may have a slightly larger vertical height and all digital calipers may be slightly different.

Second and far more important than the height of the lenses is the location of the nose pads. On Decot Glasses the nose pads are much, much lower than on most eyeglass frames I have seen,. It is substantial. This is likely the reason they sit as high as they do on your face relative to your pupils. I made a rough measurement from the top of the lens to the center point of the nose pads and got a figure of just under 32mm which subtracted from the overall lens size of 48.8 means that 16.8 of the lens is below the center of the nose pads and 32 mm is above that point..

I have used my Decot glasses for close to 20 years and they work very well for me. The one and only reason I will continue to look for glasses at Zenni and any other manufacturer is the cost, period. Contacts never worked for me and if I could afford Lasik I would go that route for sure. Naturally over the years I have spent far more on glasses than Lasik would cost but it is what it is.

Good luck to all with their vision choices!!

Curious.
What was the problem?
For me it's the fact that my eyes will create too much gunk (lipids?) with contacts in so my dominance will change minute to minute. And they caused tons of migraines. If you're eyes are gunked constantly, contacts are worse than useless playing pool.

To be honest, the best thing for vision for me was a coaching lesson with CJ. We talked a good bit about glasses, contacts, vision and approaching the shot. He taught me to look at the shot with my full face (like the tiger on his shirt would track prey!). With his stance, getting squared up like that is pretty easy. Your nose points down the shot, you use both eyes, all of your senses are squared to the line of the shot. Eye dominance just doesn't seem to matter any more like that. You brain is geared to account little vision issues if you're squared up to threats/whatever. I can't remember the last time I even thought about eye dominance playing pool since I've started doing this.

He also emphasizes aiming while you approach the shot, not when you're down on the table. Regular glasses work fine if you're standing straight up and aiming, when you go down you're just confirming body position WRT the line of the shot and vision is not as important there.

I shoot better without glasses or contacts now, half blind, than I did with perfect correction/one eye over the stick style. In fact, the less I do vision wise while down the better. I've been getting great results lately only looking at the CB on the final strokes, which is not really focusing on anything more than a foot past my bridge hand, and just trusting that my aiming-while-approaching-the-shot was good.

So I need to get my prescription re analyzed its been several years. I know they make snooker glasses, but my wife may call it quits if I starting rocking something in that realm. I have prescription ray ban aviators and my Oakley office glasses I think the aviator frame can work for my needs. Problem is my current pair are sunglasses. Anyway I was thinking of getting clear lenses in an aviator frame they have a naturally taller lens and just working with optometrist to dial them in for dual use. I just want to see what others have used if there is diff recommended brands/models etc people have luck with. Yes, I know you can get Lasik but I am not lasering my eyeballs. Just personal preference. I got decent insurance so I can get new frames covered with lenses for pretty cheap. I dont mind glasses at all just need to find something that works.

FYI, I have lots of good advice on this topic here:

Enjoy!

The name of them (and a link preferably--but at least the name) might help other people be able to find them too. I don't know how much luck people are going to have finding them by searching ebay for "eye glass raiser upper thingies", especially on a German site.
"Propeyes" on Amazon. About $7, comes with 2 different sizes. Pretty sure it is the same type thing from the German site.
