2022 World Snooker Championship (Apr 16th - May 2nd)

As much as I like Ronnie’s game…I’d hate to be his ref….he’s tough on them.

Yes sorry, 2 on Sunday, 2 on Monday.

The points to win a frame are different each frame. Its because depending on the order the balls are run, there could be up to 147 available points, (maximum), or way, way, way fewer. When one player has half the total available points, plus a little more, for the way the balls were run that particular frame, the other player often concedes.

Just watch 2 or 3 frames from start to finish and you will pick it right up. I did the same.

So at 74 the player wins ? 148 divided by 2
since the opponent can't win ?
how many frames per session?
i appreciate
your tolerance of my ignorance. (y)

I'm not sure the frames per session. Maybe 5 or 6? I lost track myself.

No, 74 would only be half if the players played a red black, red black, red black, etc. That's the only way to get 147. Usually the game have much fewer points. Red is worth 1 point, black worth 7. If they do this back and forth until there are no balls left on the table, they will get 147 points. But for example if they do red plus blue, the blue is worth 5 points. And the total would be much less.

Also, if one player has reached "half the available points", there is still a chance for the other player to win. The trailing player will go for a "snooker" which is the same as a safe in pool. If the leading player fails to hit the ball legally, the trailing player will be awarded the point value. So the trailing player can catch up by playing a snooker or two. If they do, then there will be enough points left on the table for the trailing player to win.

Larry the winning line changes with the # of red balls left. Red balls represent a possible 8 points as in the red and ensuing black. The colors go in order after the last color after the last red. Then....snookers are possible so.... it is confusing but a great way to teach math in the schools which some do!

So at 74 the player wins ?

It has to do with how many points they are behind and how many points are remaining.

74 points could be
8 reds and 8 blacks (64) + 2 reds and 2 browns (10) + miss on the next red = 74 points

In that case, there are now 5 reds left, which means there is 67 points remaining. 5 reds and 5 blacks (40) + remaining colors (27)

So the player that is behind can still win if they get two 4 point snookers (safeties) and then run out the remaining balls.

Again, great to see so many new people finding Snooker and the World Championships.

Comments on rules, length of the event.

1. The rules, really are stable now and work for the vast majority of the time. Don't expect any changes to the core of the game. Discussing it is kind of a moot point.
Tennis the same, Golf the same, you get the idea.

2. 17 days is not too long for this World Championship. It has been the same since 1977 as it is time proven.
The ebbs and flows in one match with multiple sessions adds drama, tension and the best player wins.
It is a true test of the mind, talent, endurance, technique.
Only the complete players win it.
It is not for the Tiktok generation of instant gratification, even the shorter tournaments for race to 10 final would be too much. If you want a fast Snooker event, once a year they have the single frame shootout.

3. Blackball respot in particular has produced some of the greatest drama in sports history.

4. The format, rules, are so good it has major sponsors, a World tour and is watched by 500 million people now.

5. The pockets should NEVER be square cut. It would make Snooker too easy.
Getting a century break is special, because it is hard.
Nobody is interested in making the game easy, loses appeal to the general public.

Still room to grow, but Snooker is in a great place.

Speaking of which, the USA has always been a market known for cuesports but Snooker has never taken off there.
Always found that a bit disappointing to be honest. The US title is held in a small club in NYC with less than 32 entries the last time I looked, tables in rooms are rare as hen's teeth.
It will need money and vision to make anything happen in the USA.

For most pool players the unbelievable thing about the snooker cues is the tip looks like something Hippie Dave would play with.

Many won't grasp that so... those tips more closely resemble chef's hats then dime or nickle radius tips. At least the close ups I have seen.
Here's Ronnie's tip from yesterday. He bent down to make a shot and a fiber on the top was not in place, and he went to his corner to use sandpaper before he went to shot his shot.

BTW, Session 3 of 4 begins at 8 a.m. Eastern today. Ronnie 12, Judd 5, They're racing to 18 (Best of 35). They will play, I think, 9 frames this session, unless, of course, Ronnie reaches 18. If he does, he wins the whole shebang. Winner gets $628,792 (500,000 pounds) and runner-up gets $251,517 (200,000 pounds) in the 17-day-long tournament.

For those who can't watch it live, there is live scoring here: http://www.snooker.org/

For those who enjoy the odds, bookies have Ronnie priced at 1/40 and Judd at 16/1 today.
That’s the most brutal vig to out run I’ve ever seen. Wow they are robbing their customers.

If Ronnie wins, it would be cool to have Stephen Hendry come out and present the trophy since he will be breaking Hendry's record.

ronnie is such a great front runner that i just don't see a comeback happening. ronnie needs 6 frames, judd needs 13.. maybe he can make it a little bit exciting by closing the gap
