Pretty much, which is why I play 10 ball if given a choice.

From my point of view, the chances of shooting the 9 and fluking it are small enough that it's not a problem. I could see needing to call it if you are shooting it earlier in the rack, but on the last ball, if a player is so bad that he misses the pocket by 4 feet and it goes into the other pocket? If I can't overcome that then I'll take the loss. If I don't like it, I'll play 10 ball.
9 ball is a hustler's favorite "luck" game. Marty Reisman used to hustle table tennis getting outrageous spot. His scoring shots either hit the net and dribble over or catch the table edge and go sideways. His luck made him lots of money. A strong 9 ball hustler promoted ring games with weaker players. Riding the cheese every shot. They don't appreciate the skill of the luck shot.
Those ten ball rules are ‘Johnny come lately’ rules….I play ten ball like I‘ve always played nine ball, anything goes.
I feel that people who want call shots should be paying more attention to their own game instead of watching their opponent play and hoping they miss…..they’re dive bar rules.
….snooker, one pocket, and three cushion billiards do just fine without call shots.
No it hasn’t. It became one when texas express rules became popular after the color of money. Then when you played in a tournament they would always announce it would be texas express rules. At some point it just become The norm. Nothing says you can’t play call pocket 9 ball lol
On another note In my experience playing this game the only people that slop in balls all the time are bad players. You would see it happen a lot when a couple 3s play in apa. It doesn’t happen often with good players . We don’t hit the ball hard unless we have to and we don’t miss by that much. If I see good players slopping a ball in it’s usually they barely miss a bank and get the extra rail into the opposite pocket.
Your slop shot riding the money ball guarantees you'll be my next victim.

Some tournaments are call pocket on the nine and the nine gets spotted on the break.
Better players do not want to haphazardly rearrange the table.
That sort of destroys your plan.
I have actually played in 9 ball tournaments that were played using strict 10 ball rules,
called pocket called safe.
call pocket 10b is the best game imo. NOT call safe(or 10b last) tho. worst form of rotation ever imo. we play wpa rules with one exception: you can make the 10b on a called combo/carom.
I sort of like the call safe call shot as the skill level is a bit heightened.

We're both playing under the same rules.
its a gambling game. was never intended for league/funsy play. rolls have always been part of it.
takes away a good two-way shot. i played it once and found it to be pretty boring myself. i like DCC's way the best. just play 10b with regular 9b rules. maybe add a 'call-the-10' but the bigfoot has used these rules since the beginning and it works fine. good players and not much slop too.

Guy, I look at 9 ball that same way I look at pro golf, there's allot of luck at times, and allot of the other, like hitting perfect drive, and then landing a divot.
Last week, I watched the final round, Fed X points were in play for many.
The man leading was supposed to win, shouldn't have but did.
I think it was on the 17th hole?
He drove it out of bounds, hit the INTERIOR OF a tree (went out of sight) ball caromed off/forward and back on to the fairway.
Luck? of course, part of the game yep?
Because of this Forward/carom off of an Interior limb it got him into the playoffs/which he ended up winning.
The announcers were VERY surprised it went forward after the tree/hit/carom.
9 or 10 ball makes no difference if you are matching up one on one just agree to whatever rules you want.
but to answer the OP ever since 1961 when I first started playing 9 ball was a slop counts,but we did play one shot push out on any shot ,but even that was optional when you made a game.
