Sanchez- Runs out World Cup Set

... At 0:30 I think he was trying to get to the side rail for the second rail and go five rails, and he fluked into the shot. Or was he playing this strange pattern? He gave a little wave as if it was a fluke, and that is a really strange way to play that shot.
Yes, he fluked it. The apology is the main clue. Short-long at the start is much more natural.
But then at 2:03 he played a similar shot the short way. I, as a pool player first and a mediocre 3 cushion player, never considered that pattern. I would've tried going 5 rails off the left side of yellow. So maybe the first shot was what he was trying. ...
That was the shot he was playing. I think most would play thin off the left side of yellow. The way he played it the second object ball (ball 3 in 3-c talk) was a large target because he could have scored direct or hit the long rail before. One thing to watch for is how the top players manage to make the last ball big by shot choice.

Played a ton of snooker. Never once on a heated table. Can't say I've ever seen one. Maybe a UK thing...?
I think all the tables in pro events now are heated. You can often see the glowing red lights of the control panel. I think it is a relatively recent (30 years?) innovation. I don't think I've ever played on one in the US or the few times I've played in the UK in clubs.

1) Are all 3c tables that fast?
2) How in the heck do 3c guys even see those shots, much less turn around and actually execute them? Wow.
3C tables are roughly twice as fast as pool tables. That means a ball that would roll half the table on a pool table will roll the full length on a carom table. Carom tables are heated and the slate is typically 2 inches thick. At one time Gabriels was offering 60mm (2.36 inch) slate as standard with 80mm (3.14 inch) as an option. The cloth is faster than 860 as well. It is possible to hit 11 rails on a newly recovered carom table.

I'd say 3-C has roughly the same learning curve as one pocket. And just as the level of one pocket play seems to have risen a lot in the last few decades, so has the average level of the 3-C players as new shots and better ways to play shots are discovered.

In the 1990s there was one 3-C player who could be expected to average over 2.0 (points per inning) for a whole tournament -- Torbjörn Blomdahl. Now an average over 2 in a tournament for at least one of the players is common. In the "golden days" of 3-C in the US (1930s), with players like Hoppe and Cochran, there might be one game in a tournament with an average over 2.0 and a grand average of 1.00 was considered world class.

As for techniques that might be useful at pool (think of Efren), consider that pretty much every top 3-C player uses a rubber wrap. You can achieve great power with a very light grip.

hmm. i haven’t seen a snooker or
carom table that isn’t heated
Jean Balukas' room, the former Hall of Fame Billiards in Brooklyn, had an unheated carom table with nappy gold cloth. I tried playing on it a few times, and there are a few shots that are much harder on the unheated table. Shot selection is occasionally different on an unheated table. I think 3-cushion is more fun on the heated table.

It's fine and fun on an unheated table (much more affordable) with cloth that's supposed to be fast
mine had good speed just without the ice hockey effect

There are definitely many shots that provide multiple scoring paths and I'd say at this level, players do what they intend.

When we watch, there are many subtitles we don't see...mainly avoiding unintended kisses, leaving favorable positions for self and unfavorable ones for the opponent.

That's why it is even more interesting when Blohmdal does the commentary, because he sees all of that, and more, and comments on it.

Are you talking about Royal Pro cloth? If I was the one making the decision I would always choose Royal Pro for an unheated table.

About the level of play in 3-C today.... here's a pretty good average. This guy Jaspers once made 34 in a row without a miss, but it was in sets (to 15 points) format so it doesn't count as a run. (Play starts 20 minutes in, basic stream but with score.)

Dick looks mild but he's HARD.

here is highest run in competition from my favorite player, roland forthomme.

I believe 28 in a single match is a record shared by 3 players currently.
