Mosconi Cup Team - USA

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I am a US viewer, and I disagree, and so do a lot of others. It's okay to root for Team Europe and European champions, but it is difficult to read disparaging remarks about an American Hall of Famer and champion on a pool forum. Yes, he's not a pool purist. That's for sure. But neither was Alex Higgins, and he was loved around the world.
Not sure why you think I root for anyone. Stylistically, my favorite players are the Filipinos, but that doesn't mean I root for them. In over 80% of the matches I watch, I don't root for either player, just for good play. Nobody has ever mistaken me for a rowdy fan. Except at the Mosconi, I won't root for an American just because they are American. I have never rooted for Team Europe at the Mosconi and never will, but if they win, I have no problem telling them well-played.

I have not said Earl doesn't attract TV/stream viewers because I'm in no position to do so, but I do know that at the 2021 US Open, the only Matchroom event in which Earl played in either of the last two years, Matchroom never put him on the TV table. I am offering my first-hand knowledge of whether his match tables draw a lot of people at the few tournament venues in which he actually shows up. They used to, but now they don't. I realize he may be picked by Matchroom this year to compensate him for what sadly happened last year, and I'm mentally prepared for having to deal with his selection, but it would be just another example of America forgoing a chance to develop its more youthful talent on one of the toughest stages of them all.

Earl's physical attack on Hunter Lombardo during the play at last year's American 14.1 got him barred from Q-Masters. He shows little respect for opponents, tournament officials, or event producers, and it has been true for a very long time. Yes, he's accountable for that, and it's my every right as one who spends a lot of money as a paying customer and who contributes money to professional pool to take exception to a player that so often disrespects the game and the people who play and administer it.

Actually, in his love for the game and his respect for the champions that came before him, Earl is one of the true purists in the game today.

Finally, I have seen Alex "Hurricane" Higgins play live in England. I don't see many similarities with Earl. Yes, I know Alex' entire story, and he was a fascinating character, showing up at posh parties, living the wild life, even disappearing completely from time to time. He was a celebrity in every sense of the word. When he went missing once for a couple of weeks, it was front page news in the English tabloids, but largely because snooker, which had ample prime time coverage on the BBC, was so deeply embedded in British culture.

I know you and I will never agree on Earl, but you're wrong to tell me that I can't take public exception when he disrespects our sport. Yes, I can, and I will. He is one of the best that ever picked up a cue, nobody can ever take that from him.

The Mosconi cup shouldn’t be (and was never designed to be) for “developing new talent”. It’s to bring the best 5 players.

Remember that.

It’s a joke that we’re even considering anyone under a 760 FargoRate.

For Europe it would be a joke for them to consider anyone under 800 FargoRate.

Because it’s not about developing new talent.

A bit of a gut punch when our second automatic qualifier is Oscar and then you see Europe’s is FSR. That’s no knock on Oscar, but jeez is Europe stacked.
Yeah, our only outside hope is that they are races to 5, which significantly decreases the Europeans huge advantage as opposed to if it were considerably longer races.

It's for the best professionals. Earl has basically sat out the last two years of competition, and. although he still plays strong pro speed it's arguable whether he's a pro player anymore.

Actually, in recent years, coaches of Team USA HAVE used the Mosconi as a training ground in developing young talent. The trend was set by Johan Ruijsink when he selected the 23-year old Tyler Styer and the 22-year old Billy Thorpe instead of proven Mosconi veterans like Morris, Hatch, Archer and others for the 2018 team. The 2018 team was the one that broke the American losing streak and Thorpe and Styer have gone on to nice careers in pro pool. Tyler's pedigree has grown, and he beat Filler in 2021 in the Mosconi, and he just beat Gorst at the US Open.

I feel like it's time to make a formatting change. I don't know exactly what but a change is due for several reasons. One, it's stale and two it's time for some woke-ness. Maybe make it six player teams with (2) she/her/hers, (2) he/him/his and (2) they/them/the

Oh boy, that would help a lot. They add the two Fishers and we add WHO?

I think that has changed. Tyler used to be kind of an unemotional kind of guy. Many mistake this as being a snob or antisocial or mean. But since he's met, fell in love with, and married Margaret Fefilova, he's different. He shows emotion and is friendly and has a warm herat. In fact, he has been playing nonstop and it shows in his performance. He's hitting 'em strong, practicing every day of the week when he's not competing in every event he can reach.

This might be a man's world in pool, but it would be nothing, NOTHING without a woman or a girl.

He definitely picked the better looking of the two Russians. I think Gorst got the short end of that stick.

It is if you have NO other talent other than NEW TALENT.

Year after year the "nominate Earl for the team" discussion returns and in my eyes this is just another indication, that US pool was in a downward spiral for the past 15 years.
That said, I hope guys like Styer are a promise for the future and I think there are many young US players, who have a lot of potential.

But if you look at the Europeans, no one would think about bringing back Souquet , who is, like Earl, still a great player, but, also like Earl, well past his prime.

Souquet, is closing in on retirement in style...just let Earl do the same.

I never said you cannot take public exception. It's okay to call me out if I angered you, but that was not my intention at all. Sometimes words in black and white can be misinterpreted without seeing the person speaking the words. I shared my opinion with how it differed from yours.

Speaking of snooker champions, Jimmy White had a little incident today on the green baize. Everybody is siding with his stance, and me? I'm siding with the referee.

It's challenging to post on this Discussion Forum sometimes. Lurker mode is more comfortable and safe.

yea, that was unnecessary. that ref is known to be jovial and friendly. the ref laughed at his own mistake and jimmy overreacted like a street thug (which to be fair is not his usual behavior).

If I misinterpreted you, I hereby apologize.

They even got Johnny Archer distracted from his game by making a comment about his wife.
Boisterous crowds are fun but that is over the line. I liked a couple of years ago when people were trolling SF Giant's Hunter Pence by holding up signs that said "Hunter Pence can't parallel park", "Hunter Pence rides a moped", and "Hunter Pence eats soup with a fork."
