Predator World 8 Ball Championship (Nov 19-22), Puerto Rico, Winner $60K

This regular commentator on Predator events, De Ruyter is probably the most critical of all commentators and most stingy with his praises. No good shot by any of the top players is good enough for him. I expect this joker to break perfectly, not miss any shot, make all right decisions or not make any errors

Well, De Ruyter acquitted himself pretty well, winning 6 games vs. Chang. He made several errors in the first half of the match, to trail 5-2. As for his breaks, he did do what he was advocating on the 10-Ball streams, just slugging the break from near center with lesser regard for the cue ball. He was successful on 4 of his 6 breaks (3 B&Rs), one was dry, and one sent the cue ball off the table.

darren won fairly easy against al-yousef. noone has better patterns, but he misses the occasional mid ranger. might still go deep in this one
I’ve watched him commentate for 30 seconds. I of course am going to be very cautious when being critical of fellow commentators, but his immediate analysis of the layout of the break … every 8-ball player would have disagreed. So did the shooter.

IMO Darren is best 8ball player. Or at least has been for a long time even if he's fallen off recently. I think his patterns are generally high percentage and when I watched him commentate, the speed with which he sees the balls connect is unreal. He's calling 4 balls as the last ball stops rolling. Love his commentary.

I agree- great commentator.

He is definitely a top notch 8 ball player, but there are several players at his level- SVB, Corey Deuel (on a bar table), Shaw, Alex, Kaci, etc. His pattern play might be the best, but some have a better break than him and shoot so straight that they overcome pattern errors.

I've only watched one match, but I'm pretty shocked anyone would still have an 8 ball tourney with the - open after the break rule. Way too easy on any American style table for these guys. Run out or rack um.

This style of 8 ball does nothing for me as a fan.

What's up with the Lion? He can barely walk around the table.
The brackets say the Pagulayan match this morning was a Table 1 match. But I can't find it in the saved matches on YouTube (nor on Facebook or Kozoom). Anyone know whether it was really played on Table 1 and, if so, is it available for replay somewhere?

Where is Skyler Woodward? He isn't playing in the World 8-Ball event, but I thought he was signed up for it, and I thought I saw him in the audience a day or two ago at the 10-Ball event.

Here we go again. Free stream pro pool and someone's bitching. Wow, how novel. WTF, dude don't watch it.

Furthermore...I love pool and have played and watched a lot of it. If this format doesn't do it for me, that's worth discussing. I think Darren Appleton tried his best to create a format for American style table 8 Ball. I liked his rule set, he just didn't have this level of production behind him.

I was watching it live on Kozoom. I don't believe the other channels went live until the next round at 11:00 or whatever. Pretty sure it was table 1.

Maybe we'll see Mika go on tilt.

I agree 100%. I actually also played there. It had best rules.

I'd suggest a more accurate comparison would be the total prize fund, not just first. Mind you, I don't have the time or inclination to make a comparison, so this is just one person's opinion.

Many of the US Pro Billiards Events pay high for first, but if you don't finish in the top 3-4, you can't even break even on entry fee and travel costs. Also the total prize fund for the MOSCONI CUP is fairly substantial.
Darn right. The size of the winner's check is not the measure of a tournament. That's a smoke screen we all see through.

The year in pool hit bottom when $140,000 of the $226,000 prize fund was paid to the top four at the World 10-ball and only the top 16 more than covered expenses.

Agreed that total prize fund is a good measure.

What were his rules? I liked the IPt rules. Ball in Kitchen after scratch on break, no mixed combos on open table, scratch on 8 loses.

At this level with many of the best players in the game, allowing them to have an open table after making a ball on the break makes the game far too easy. "Take what you make" is the only way a professional Eight Ball tourney should be played. Well, at least the five ball is orange.
