Changing the format just before the tournament

This sounds like the "7 max in APA" discussions. A 1200 team and a 1400 team are fairly far apart in skill, that is 100 per player, which means a doubling of the game spot. 600 vs a 700 he even race is said to be 5-10. So having all teams over 1200 be the same falls into the same issues that APA has of having 7s that are 600 Fargo as well as 700 Fargo.
Yep.

Hard to know for certain, but it seems like the TD made a command decision that was fair. You want to believe it was because of a complainer, he probably wants to believe it was to correct the handicap to accommodate pro level fargos. There's grounds to complain, but since you crushed everyone, it would be petty. It's likely they'll post an amended handicap next time.
I believe it was a complainer because that was the exact reason I was given.

I agree, but I also know that four chips is probably the right number in this scenario. I am not the type to be the complainer, but I definitely let the TD know he should have thought about this when he made the announcement. The Phoenix pool scene is getting world famous for their insistence on handicapping and capping tournaments to suit the lower rated players.
The undisputed fact remains that the majority would agree that most poolroom’s handicapped tournaments still favor the higher skilled / higher ranked players. They still manage to finish in the $ much more than the lower ranked players.

Also, the majority of the complaints TD’s receive regarding another player’s ranking come from the higher ranked players, who generally feel, even with the proper handicaps, they should never lose a match to a significantly lower skilled player.

I have to disagree. The majority of our tournaments ban anyone over 640 Fargo. The majority of our complainers are lower rated players complaining when they lose. I’ve spent a lot of time in the carolinas and I won’t argue with you about your region. I only heard the world beaters complaining. But your “undisputed fact” does not apply to my pool scene. Come see for yourself, I have a spare bedroom for you.

Interested in your thoughts. Chip tournaments are pretty popular in my area. They also love scotch doubles here. A tournament was advertised for a scotch doubles chip tournament where the lower rated teams get more chips (based on your combined fargos). The higher tier was listed as “1200 and above get 5 chips”.

My partner and I get there and the TD tells us that someone already complained about us and he only allowed us to start with 4 chips. We are 1467 combined (mainly because of my partner 😬).

I drove 45 minutes to this place to find the rules changed to suit a complainer. I don’t mind starting with 4, unless I’m expecting 5. Am I just nitpicking here?
Who's your partner, Filler? Lol.

Yes, it's BS. Whether it was right or not it's bs, also the TD has a tournament to run and protect, so I see both sides but lean towards - you advertised it, you live with it

He’s not the most well-known pro. Joven Bustamante. Anyone unfamiliar with him should YouTube some of his matches. He’s incredible.

He beat Carlo Biado at the US Open. And your complaining about your rating.
Never once have I complained about my rating. Literally not one time. My gripe is with a TD advertising one thing then changing it 5 minutes before the tournament.

Showing up with a pro to a tourney with a bunch of 500 level players is indeed grounds for an ad hoc rules adjustment.
I would be inclined to agree if he didn’t play in almost every tournament he’s allowed to play in. The Phoenix area has dozens of tournaments per week if you’re a 500 speed. There is one night that has a tournament that either of us is allowed in. He also happens to be the nicest guy in the room and is well-liked by everyone in the room.

Being a pro is a tough gig, if he has to resort to playing in a bunch of bar table amateur tournaments to pay the bills.

An over twenty times world champion was brought up near our weekly pistol match and was one of the early competitors. His brother still competed regularly. When JM showed up he was more than welcome and competed heads up in the top division with about twenty of us. Granted he was there to have fun but the young guns were Masters and Grandmasters themselves. I don't recall JM winning in the half-dozen times I remember him competing and he came in as low as fifth. Needless to say the young guns were trying hard to beat their idol, serious bragging rights!

I would just be glad they let him play in the first place. Most local tournaments won't allow that high a rating to play to begin with
