2023 World Pool Championship, Kielce, Poland

i think a speed gun may be the solution to this. the three ball rule has it's own problems
Agreed. With the way MR sees this, the only solution is a speed gun.
Yep, "3 point rule" can be unfair at times, when a ball gets bumped and denied from crossing the string which would have happened. But still pretty definitive way to make a decision based at least on something. As opposed to "I claim you are not trying enough".

Another point re speed gun: gotta set a special "limit required" for girls :) Apparently lower than for the rest of the field.

As long as there is no clear criteria, that stipulation is mere BS.

Pagz playing Filler, A-side of the bracket, and gets a such warning from Eckardt. This made even one of the commentators questioning this decision. And for a good reason, because the break was good enough. And as sound as that guy was (Nick? Mike?), he precisely came up with the same: where is the line drawn? So far, this requirement is utter nonsense.

agree completely
I don't know if there's technical criteria re: force of break or not, but if there is, I would think the ref, commentators, and players would be aware of it
yet the way the ref explained it to alex was a non-explanation. the commentators had no clue. I really hope MR gets this sorted, for all involved

Eckardt?

Thought I'd add this graphic in the thread. It doesn't go back as far as when Alex won it in—was it 2004? The "WPA World 9-Ball Championship."

Yes, it was Marcel Eckardt, the snooker referee from Germany. I like him.

Alex's break had something to do with three-point system in Europe. I don't quite get it. Roy from Norway explained it on Facebook, but it's still Greek to me.

you gotta love pool, you think matchroom would use clear rules for such a big event.

"forceful" is a BS rule. Either use the 3 point rule or not. There was nothing wrong with Alexs break, using the 3 point rule it would have been a good break.

A few screenshots from yesterday's play.

Alex's post-match interview after defeating Joshua Filler. Hard to believe Alex is 44 now and Joshua is 25. I remember Alex as a pup.

This photo of the youth in Poland just warms my heart. Kielce is the home of the Polish Pool Federation,
and the children were in the stands in full force. Love this photo by Matchroom.

This is Francesca Candela from Italy when he was playing Jayson Shaw. Look how he holds the butt end of his cuestick. His hand is turned inwards. Also, unlike the other pros, he's using a carbon fiber shaft with no glove.

Jayson Shaw looked outo fit during this match with Candela. Jayson won, but it wasn't his usual style of aggressive play.
He has spurts of greatness, though. I think he might have been suffering from Derby City Classic hangover.

Everybody loves Oi. His post-match interview was all business until the end when he gave a little clowning for the photographers.

I really, really love the colors of Shane Van Boening's tournament shirt, the blues and greens. Come on, Shane! Second verse, same as the first. Win in 2023 too.

this post explains it well:

Could somebody please answer this question? Many of us virtual railbirds have had a long discussion about the background music at this event in Targi Poland. It's very calming and subdued, quite different than other pool happenings. In fact, I really, really like it. Does anybody know if this is Matchroom's doing or if this music is supplied courtesy of the venue site, Targi Kielce? I hope Matchroom uses this music at all future events.

Targi Kielce is huge! Targi Kielce, the company initially named Kielce Trade Fairs was founded in 1992. In 2013 Targi Kielce completed a facility modernization and expansion. It offers the total of 90,000 square meters—(how many miles or feet is that?)—of exhibition grounds, including 36,000 meters of indoor exhibition space in the seven Expo Halls. It is located on 5.3 thousand square meters—(how many feet is that?)—which can be used as the venue for congresses and events for 4,500 people.

In the indoor fairground area, there are the two self-contained restaurants (high standard), two fast food outlets, and two coffee bars. I haven't heard anyone complaining about the food.

this post explains it well:

Here is Norway Roy's explanation to me about the break: Jennie,. in Europe we are often playing with a "3 point rule" on the breakshot. You get 1 point each ball you pocket and that passes the head string. So if you pocket 1 ball on the break, you need to get 2 balls to move up table past the headstring. If you pocket 2 balls, only one needs to move up table. If not. the break is not valid."

Someone tell Jeremy that it’s a “push out” after the break and not a “roll out” that he has been calling it. They have two different meanings and the refs are clearly saying Push.
