I'm a little surprised to see Diamond tables in use. I thought that Rasson was the table sponsor for the smaller, invitational Matchroom events.
yes, they used Rasson tables in this event last year.I'm a little surprised to see Diamond tables in use. I thought that Rasson was the table sponsor for the smaller, invitational Matchroom events.
It looks like they are using the same format as last year. The 4 players with the best records at the end of the third robin robin then played single-elimination (2 semifinal matches and a final match) to determine the event's winner. The semifinal and final matches were races to 7 instead of 5, but still alternate break. What is the playoff format? Single elimination of the final 4? 1v4 and 2v3? Still alt break, to 5?
The highest ranked Filipino right now per the Matchroom Nine-ball Rankings (based on all 2022 events and 2023 YTD) is Carlo Biado at 39. Matchroom should and does reward those who regularly participate and succeed in Matchroom events. Yes, there may be some tweaking from time to time, but Matchroom is doing a pretty solid job when it comes to field filling at its own invitational events.I have not seen all of the matches, but are there no Phillipinos in this? You figured if Earl is there, Reyes wouldve been invited.
The 10 players who made it to the second stage last year ranged from 13 wins to 6 wins. One player who didn't make it through also had 6 wins (perhaps the tie breaker was their head-to-head result, but I am not sure as total games won might also be a reasonable tie breaker).Top 10 out of 16 qualify for next stage.
What is minimum number of wins (points) needed to qualify for next stage?
My guess (plucking from the air) is one third of maximum 15 wins i.e. 5 wins but may involve tie breaker.
6 wins/ points should be safe![]()
Kudos for finding it. I spent a lot of time last night looking for it. Finally just pulled up the YouTube and scrubbed ahead until I found it.Standings as of the middle of day 2. You have to go through hoops to find this chart on MR's site.:

Yes, only 4 players in this field of 16 are in the top 16 world rankings, and 7 of the the 16 in the field aren’t even among the top 50 in the rankings. Of those 7, in my opinion, only Alex P is capable of making it to the final 4.View attachment 691452
Here is a screenshot from the video after day 2. I included this as it shows the MR world rankings for each player. It looks like nowhere near the top 16 are represented. I'm betting it's a case of herding cats, as opposed to selective picks of these players. IMO.
Agree, Alex knows how to grind his way through a tournament. I think Melling also has a chance, albeit an outside one, of making it. He splits his time between 9 ball and English pool which gives him more opportunities to get in the money but makes it harder to get in the zone and be consistent. I think many of these players have a shot if they can get in the zone and the pool gods are kind with layouts as 9 ball is a relatively straightforward game when the balls are your friend.Yes, only 4 players in this field of 16 are in the top 16 world rankings, and 7 of the the 16 in the field aren’t even among the top 50 in the rankings. Event was hurt by proximity to World 10-ball. I don’t know what the format is for the later rounds, whether the races are any longer than 5 and whether it continues with round robin matches? For that short of races, anyone has a chance to win any single match, but the overall winner will still most likely be one of the top ranked players or Alex.Agree, Alex knows how to grind his way through a tournament. If I were putting serious money on it, I'd go with the 4 already mentioned by others in this thread.
Yeah. This is a great tournament for a young player. You get to play everybody. It's not like you can be out in 2.I see that one of the players (Khalid) is the SVB junior champion and that's why he was included in this event. Hopefully that's a trend that continues as it's a great way to bring young players into these events.
