Match Room Sr Event?

Yes 80 and over...
If something like this were to take place, 65 and over would probably be best. It would be fun to see Nick, Buddy, Rempe again on the other hand maybe it would be better to just enjoy the memories of them when they were in top form. Kind of on two minds on this one...

“Nobody ever asked for a refund” :):)

A 65 and over tour would be pretty cool to have in the USA/Canada at some of the decent poolrooms. I think it would draw the oldtimers and the stories would be priceless.

bogies billiards in houston hosts a senior one pocket tournament
this year is the 8th annual version
its streamed by poolactiontv.com
last year efren played in it in 2021 and won
have to be at least 65 in the year of the event
one year they had a supersenior event where minimum age was 70 if i recall correctly

also, in three cushion billiards, quite a few of the big stars - blomdahl, jaspers, zanetti, saygnier - are 60 or pushing 60. caudron is 55

Actually Varner placed second in last year's event if I'm not mistaken.

I've certainly heard nothing about this and, to be honest, it would be at odds with what appears to be Matchroom's strategic direction, which I'd summarize as "to a) give players all over the world a platform to exhibit their skills and earn an income and b) offer young promising players an opportunity to both develop and exhibit the skills that will make them the pros of tomorrow."

If somebody can make a financial success of a senior tour, I'm all for it, but I'd be in shock if it were Matchroom.

I don't think Matchroom would promote anything like this to the detriment of the above stated goals to be sure. However as some sort of an occasional match up of 'the old guard' for us old codgers to watch and enjoy may not be such a bad thing.

MR is never ever going to go with something like.

BUT, the concept is a worthy one.

There are a ton of older players with a wealth of knowledge and skill that would love and benefit from an event that *excluded* the older pros and just gave the *OFs” (Old Folks) a chance to compete without Parica or Varner or Efren stealing the pot, or being prohibitive favorites to cash, which is what the Seniors event in Houston has become, IMO.

Oh yeah, I know, they don’t have to win but those guys have forgotten more about pool than most of us will ever know. It’s a shame the OFs can’t have a tournament that doesn’t turn into a free buffet for the older pros.

oh, and if you like the idea of playing the pros so much — great, go enter an Open event — but give the OFs an event to enjoy themselves and to see how they stack up against each other later in life. Sooner or later, everyone here, if they make it to 65 or older, will be an OF and know what I mean.

Lou brings up some interesting points, but how would you go about disallowing a Parica, Varner, or Efren if they qualify for that age stipulation?
In general I agree with Lou in the fact that I would like to see more events for seniors at the local level. Any billiard rooms that are still open seem to just cater to the young crowd with loud juke boxes etc. I'm not so naïve not to know that this is what brings in their money but something more for seniors without having to go to a senior center would be nice.

There is a World Seniors Snooker Championship. I don't know how much Matchroom is involved.

I doubt that a seniors pool tour could work other than in the usual self-financed way -- a few stars and a lot of dead money. That's not likely to last long.

Just tie in one over 60 Sr. event with ah MR pro event.
It's great for both sides to intermix.
It couldn't hurt the gate count.
See allot of smiling faces doing what they enjoy.
Maybe even get to see Black Bart play. :)

i disagree lou
many old folks like myself enjoy the opportunity to play against the likes of parica ,varner,or efren
more importantly its the situations where you sit next to them while watching a match or at the bar and get to ask them questions and get to know them personally.
i have found them more approachable in this setting . they seem more relaxed
additionally there are alot of other old folks who get bounced early and you get to meet and play them too while
the better players are progressing in the tourney
i have gone 4 times (i think...senior moment) to the bogies senior tournament and its a highlight of my year

I don't think it's a tough problem to solve, Dennis -- I think most of us could pick Jose, Nick, or Efren out of a line up, lol.

As to the rest, maybe you use a FR cut off. It's the same with slow play. There are some guys that are notorious for their slow play. The solution is pretty simple: you need a TD with the huevos to announce at the start of play, and later enforce, a slow play will not be tolerated policy. Then they do whatever they need to, like start awarding balls in the slow guy's tray and putting them in their opponent's tray. If needed you start taking them two at a time. The slow guys will suddenly get much speedier.

When I'm in the mood I like playing the pros and have played in scores of Open events. In fact, I was signed up to play in the US One Pocket Open in Vegas this year but they kept screwing around with the dates and they just recently completely canceled it. But there are still a ton of other events you can play in against the pros all across the country if that's what you're looking to do. You want to get to hang with then? No problem. One event I STS with Jose for a couple of hours; at another I partied in the hotel bar with Daz; at others I've hung out and bought drinks for any number of pros: and at still others I've gone to strip clubs with a few of them who will remain nameless to protect the not so innocent.

Back to the Seniors event, even if they don't outright win, the pros will inevitably knock some guys, legit OFs, out of the tournament who would have otherwise gone deeper and might have even cashed. I know half a dozen OFs like me across the country that will happily donate to the pros in an Open event but won't go to play in Houston. But, at the end of the day, it's their event and they can do whatever they want. No biggie.
