Predator WPA World 8 Ball Championship 2023 (17-22 Oct 2023), Austria, Winner $75K

The rule set is poor for this tourney. Has to be take what you make AND ball in hand behind the line on a scratch just to start with. I just don't get it with 8 ball. If they are playing on American style tables, the rule set has to be more stringent if they want this to be interesting. I'm not interested. :(
Tend to agree but its a WPA event thus standard WPA rules which is what 99% of 8b uses anyway.

If they are playing "open table" after a successful break then it is a joke! You simply must play "take what you make" to add any difficulty to the run out! Add in tight pockets (Mr. Sung style) and you might have a real contest.

there are a couple of donuts in the score board, good players like grabe losing lopsided. this suggests that others than pecelj have played TPA 1.000. would be interesting to know how many.

Wonder what happened to Daryl Peach. Now he suddenly popped up as commentator in this event.
One rule streams should avoid is pairing commentators with similar voices. Daryl and George sound same that you cannot tell who is saying what  But again most mute commentators these days so does not make any difference

Quite possible though to have donut and still not get TPA 1.000 especially against dead money

IMO you are overrating the appeal and interest of tactics in pro 9 ball. The fact is that most 9-ball safety exchanges are obvious and boring. If you don't have a clean shot you hide behind another ball and make your opponent kick or jump. From there it's partly skill and partly the roll the player gets after making contact. This is all after repeatedly watching the 1 ball go in the side off the break.
You are omitting the countless two way shots played in nine ball that have only slight application in eight ball. Tactics also includes getting a little more, defensively, out of your kick shots. In eight ball, when you have to kick, if you don't kick it in, you've probably lost. Rotation game tactics further entail interesting approaches to the pushout and when to accept or decline opponent's pushout. Finally, I don't agree that safety play is routine. Even at the top level, some are really good at it and more than a few aren't.

Rotation pool gives you many chances to play offense and defense together and tests your ability to endure sometimes lengthy tactical exchanges. This is not the case in the more bland game of eight ball.

I though the WPA was waiting 5 months until the ban starts?
Worldwide for players. I thought the ACBS ban was immediate for Asian players.

There is a little to be left for interpretation. But I thought this threat was exactly why the Asians that skipped Hanoi chose to do so.

What a stupid rules. Full time pool players rely only on winnings and go to as many tournaments to earn money, (or lose some). So by punishing these players, how would they earn their living? Get a second job then pool players.

I think it is ball in hand behind the line on a scratched break. Chang vs. SVB.

Also open table after the break.

I think they need smaller pockets and/or longer sets.

There was a match in the late stages of the Reno IPT event. In a race to 13, it ended 13-12. However, in those 25 games, the breaker came back to the table for a second inning only once. All the other racks were either break-and-runs or the other player cleared up. Dry breaks were fatal. And that was with the supposedly stroke-testing "slow" napped cloth.

when daryl won the worlds in 2007 he spent a lot of the money on a manager that gave him comically crappy advice. such as not entering tournaments if he didn't get show up money, etc. of course this is a non-starter in pool in general, but add to that daryl's less than exciting personality, the financial downturn and you can figure out the rest. daryl's a nice and honest guy but also probably the most dull guy ever to play the mosconi cup.

Yes, good memory. Maybe there are no ACBS sanctioned events in the coming months that Oi cares about?
With that I didn’t know if ACBS would have rescinded his in continental federation invite to participate in a World Championship, declared a suspension that WPA honors, if he’s just banned from their events only, if they backed off, if he slipped through the cracks, or if they’ll drop the shoe later on him in an ugly way.

So he blew that $100K prizemoney on a manager instead of on money games

Final race to 10 is too short. Should be at least 13. I like the old Matchroom W9B which were race to 17 final
Pockets should be not more than 4". I think these pockets on Predator Apex tables are 4.25"

There are more break and runs in this event than during the fall of Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein put together
Aleksa and Tyler 7 B&R in 1 match, FSR 6 B&R
Reminds me of the 9 ball matches before the MR rules. 1 on the spot, break anywhere, produced some of the most boring pool ever, imo. Make the wing ball-connect the dots to the 9 ball, rinse and repeat.

The nineball rules have made it a much more exciting game to me. Would be nice if someone did the same for 8 ball.

Yeah, who knows. The ACBS threat letters were before the WPA vote. However, neither the ACBS or WPA clarified after the WPA vote the ACBS threat letters.

I too thought the Asian players who played in Hanoi would be barred by the ACBS from this event.
