Predator WPA World 8 Ball Championship 2023 (17-22 Oct 2023), Austria, Winner $75K

I believe I heard one of the commentators say it rained a few hours the night before the SVB/Szewczyk match.
True. Past weather data tells humidity level has been 90-100% for 14 hours, going to 80 only by 2PM.
So very probably it is not eaither the Aero rack or the ref to blame, which the youtube chat was talking about throughout the whole game.

Wow! Talk about a wild finish. The double hill rack comes down to safety play, and Szewczyk wins the race to the shot, but then he misses and SVB escapes.
That was the most interesting and well played rack I've seen so far. And at hill-hill too!

i assume he meant the skids not the racks. was indeed skiddy today.

the racks have been consistently loose from day 1, just as they were last year in puerto rico. i don't know what to think about that. in the long run it should even itself out, but i imagine a theoretical perspective is difficult to embrace as a player, especially if you lose because of it

What caused all that? It was almost like the balls were sticky. There was something different, it wasn’t two guys playing poorly.
SVB being the only professional pool player left on the planet that uses master chalk, that is what caused it. And it is costing him dearly. You don't see the cue ball needing cleaning between every other shot for any other player, because they all stopped using chalk that incessantly causes skids every other shot.

Interesting for sure, but only well played until Szewczyk finally won the safety battle and then missed the shot that would have surely sealed the match. A little bit of anticlimax here.

It was a long, tough cut shot by Szewczyk from off the rail. Shane did well to get out from there, beginning with a precise cut shot along the top rail.

Chris in NC, in post #226, reckoned Szewczyk missed a 75% shot and I concur. Agreed that Shane did a nice job getting out after that miss. Also agreed that it made for great theater. It was the kind of rack so often found in bar table eight ball, a far more interesting version of eight ball. Electrifying!

Jay, no, it wasn’t that tough. The shot I’m referring to that he missed on his final trip to the table was no harder than a spot shot except the cue ball was about 14 inches off the end rail.

That shot was about the same difficulty as the jacked up 5 ball shot Allison missed which cost her a trip to the finals.

When Shane left that shot on the 7 I honestly thought he had lost the match. That shot's better than a 75% make I think, though the pressure of a semi-final, world championship, hill-hill match might bring that down a little.

Jay might be thinking about the 2 ball shot before the 7, which was much tougher than the 7.

He is playing in the final tomorrow at 12:30ET. It hasn’t cost him anything yet. Maybe it’s one of the reasons he is still playing.

A few stats on today's semifinal matches:

Pehlivanovic defeated Lechner 10-8
- Successful breaks numbered 11. All 11 became B&Rs, 6 by Pehlivanovic and 5 by Lechner.
- Dry breaks numbered 7. 6 of the 7 were run out by the non-breaker on his first, and only, visit.
- So 17 of the 18 games ended in 1 inning. The other game ended on the breaker's second visit.
- The only miss or foul by either player in the entire match was Lechner's miss on the 8-ball (in Game 16, leading 8-7) after bad position from his last solid.

Van Boening defeated Szewczyk 10-9
- SVB was dry on 7 of 10 breaks, Szewczyk was dry or fouled on 7 of 9.
- B&Rs numbered 1 -- by SVB.
- Each player missed 4 shots (counting a couple of 2-ways as safeties).
- SVB fouled once, Szewczyk twice (on 2 breaks).

So it looks like Pehlivanovic has an easy path to the title tomorrow, right? ;)

This has been a very interesting 8-ball Championship. The pockets played pretty loose throughout. It felt like boring runouts in the beginning then the break started sputtering. Today, the break seemed to be a huge detriment.

I believe this is going to be a unique final. It could be a blank or it could be a hill-hill but it just feels like it’s going to be won by circumstances. All the players can pocket balls on these tables and they have been shooting great.

The winner will have earned it, regardless of how it looks in the end. It just feels like there will be lots of moaning, from the fans of the player who comes up short, due to the “rolls”. Hope my player wins.
