Mostly for chuckles I put my corvette in front of my service station with a for sale sign on it. A guy stopped, talked a bit, wanted to test drive it. He was wearing a decent suit, might be able to afford it, so I agreed. I was riding shotgun of course.

He pulled out onto the four lane and commented it was running a little rough, needed a tune up. I held my peace. He shifted into the next gear, then tried to move the shifter up and right to find third gear. After a struggle he said, "I can't find third gear."

"You found third just fine, you took off in it." That for telling me my car needed a tune-up!

Was that a 4 speed? I thought the springs returned the shifter to the 1-2 gate and you push left for reverse and right for 3-4. I've taken off in third gear before, when I was 14.

This was a four speed in a '66 corvette. Originally came with the hot 427 in it but like most of those engines it was blown by somebody that didn't realize Chevy was serious about having to warm them up before revving them hard. When I bought it the car had a new from crate 350 in it from about 1970. I think original transmission but I don't know.

The transmission in it didn't have any spring assistance to guide you shifting. I hadn't used a clutch for anything but starting and stopping for years and having driven everything from a three on a tree to a 25 speed quadroplex in an eighteen wheeler I didn't sweat little details. I later had a '63 with a 365HP 327 that seemed to have the same or a very similar transmission.
